I did some digging while I was working on this. There is (or was) a bug that causes hlists to left-align in table cells. The workaround was to change the table class to "wikitable hlist". If you look at the LegendRJL template page, it works as directed, but when it's used (example in the LegendRJL documentation), it's still left aligned. –Fredddie™ 20:26, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

London location maps

Hi. We have a full set of Category:London location map templates which have basically been sitting in the garage with the dust sheets still on for 15 months. I started adding Hillingdon and Camden I believe. I was wondering if you could apply them to the localities and buildings in London for each relevant borough to give more precise locator maps? Might involve editing the UK infobox but also it would be great if you could some sort of coding or AWB to go through articles on places within each borough switching to the borough map. Can you help? Also, I have requested a map of Whalsay which I'm currenty working on in Shetland. Hi, I noticed your edit, but think that it may have unintended drawbacks, because many London articles will be about places that are much larger than the location map marker if a borough-scale map is used. Some places might be nearly as large as the entire borough. Importing Module:Convert

At my test2 talk (last September), you mentioned that there is currently no way to import a page from test2 to here, but that in principle test2 could be added as an import source (diff of your comment).

My reading of Help:Import shows that I do not have the rights to do an import, even if it were possible. Also, it seems unlikely that test2 would be added because import looks like a big deal (although something specifically for importing modules conceivably could be done, and no doubt someone like Tim Starling could import stuff if required.

There's no rush, and we'll see what takes place when Scribunto is enabled in a day or two, but I would like to import Module:Convert and Module:Convertdata to here for easier comparison with the existing templates. My current intention is to create the modules here with a copy/paste and a suitable edit summary including a link to the source (I would do that after the Module namespace is created here).

The next issue would be to create a template to invoke the module. Obviously it won't be Template:Convert. I could do a user subpage then test with something like {{User Johnuniq:convert|...}}, but that is klunky, and would be unsuitable in an article if I get bold enough to see how it goes in an article with some convert templates. Another possibility would be to create a standard template, something like [[Template:Xconvert]] or [[Template:convertz]] ({{convertx}} exists).

I've asked at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Import from test2.wikipedia.org about the import. For the template name, I was thinking it could be called [[Template:convert/sandboxlua]] for initial testing. Tim has just posted at VPT that test2 is now available for import. Despite appearances, I'm not actually in a rush because Module:Convert needs lots more work (which I have planned), and I've got a number of RL things to do because they have been ignored for quite a while. I need Module:Convert and Module:Convertdata, and sooner or later we should get Uncle G's docs (and some pages that links to). BTW the "Script error" you will see on that page is due to a change in the way Scribunto works, and which is preventing Module:Mw from being invoked in the way it was in the past. I've copied the two modules over onto this wiki. There was an error displayed on import "Import failed: Can't save non-default content model with $wgContentHandlerUseDB disabled: model is wikitext , default for Module:Convert is text." but it still appear to import ok. Sorry to do this in dribs and drabs, but do you want to import Template:Convert and its talk page to Template:Convertlua? That would need your test stuff as well. I like your Template:Convertlua suggestion as I think it would be better to have the test template not in the Template:Convert range because the latter is heavily used. Also, the convert module may not be implemented here, so it's a bit premature to suggest that it is a sandbox of Template:Convert. I don't know how, but when I wrote my previous reply, I completely missed your point about Template:convert/sandboxlua and the testcases. I've now had a look and they are very impressive. I dumbly thought it was still using {{convert/testcases/test}}, but I've now realized that it only uses that for the header and footer, and uses your Module:ConvertTestcase instead for the rows. I made a change in that to reduce the number of trivial fails that are found. In previous work, I noticed that some of the convert templates output a superscripted 2 or 3, instead of the html equivalent. Also, they often output &#32; for a space. And some other mostly cosmetic differences—so I expanded the cleaning performed. Johnuniq (talk) 02:46, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I rewrote it since the old method ended up calling everything twice, once to display and once to compare. The newer versipon only calls things once. Progress I've been sidetracked into looking at performance issues. In practice, it would be rare to use 100 converts on a page, but the script timeout errors in your testcases are a bit embarassing. Don't bother splitting up the tests any more because I am very likely to be able to get a dramatic improvement with one (or conceivably both) of two approaches to dealing with the large convertdata table. If wanted, more info is at my test2 talk, but all I intend from this message is to alert you what I'm probably going to do. Also, I might try tweaking Module:ConvertTestcase. Weird timing I'm getting really weird results while trying to work out what is taking so much "Lua time usage" in the testcases (I did some major refactoring of Module:ConvertTestcase hoping that might speed it up). I'll leave this for now, but I thought I'd better tell you that I have replaced Module:Convert with the simplest possible code (all it does is return "dummy"). The NewPP report in the HTML source changed from the first value (original module) to the second (dummy).

  • area Lua time usage: 8.509s → 6.836s
  • energy Lua time usage: 7.065s → 7.103s
  • force Lua time usage: 5.531s → 5.234s

Just calling {{Convert/sandboxlua}} on it's own gave the following figures:

Interesting, thanks. So if we want a live test, each test page has to be small (perhaps 100 tests per page)? The alternative would be to capture the expected test output, and compare the module results with that. More work to setup and maintain, and less elegant. Not a good choice! Thanks. You will see that I have modified Module:ConvertTestcase so it shows "Link" if disagreement is due to a wikilink, or "Span" if due to different coding in an HTML span, or "LkSp" if both link and span. Module:Convert will always output the same span code when required, but the different templates have some differences. Feel free to tweak the colors I quickly picked!
In due course I'll give more attention to the rules for when "acre" (for example) should be singular and when it should be plural—it's tricky. Any thoughts on the links in fuelconsumption? Johnuniq (talk) 10:03, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

I put a test in my sandbox that is quite interesting. I will add some details at Module talk:Convert with performance plans, and mention the sandbox. However I might have to go offline soon, so I thought I would let you know that I put all 1689 converts from the testcases into one page! It shows that the bloated Convertdata might not be a problem. Also, it's cute to see all the results on one page (although no pass/fail). There are 51 unique unknown units, 8 "is invalid here" errors (for example, where "footin" is used as an input unit), and 6 dimension errors like Cannot convert "energy" to "power". I don't think there's any reason to alter the testcases for those few errors as it's interesting to see the error text. Also, we can search the page for the red links. I have put some interesting performance tests at my test2 talk. The good news is that using mw.loadData is 2.3 times faster than using require on a page with 1689 converts. The bad news, is that loadData is 1.5 times slower on a page using 10 converts (loadData has some overheads). On the other hand, 10 converts only takes 0.05 seconds using loadData, so the fact that it is slower is just an academic irritation. I have thought of an ugly strategy to speed up convert quite a lot more, but I'm going to try to forget about that now and do more cleanup (the essential plan is to split the enormous convertdata into twenty smaller tables, and only access the table required). Those units are very confusing! I decided that they are just "power" rather than "energy consumption". I could not bring myself to use the same name for cal/d and Cal/d so I inserted "large" (but now I see it in the saved text, I forgot to do the same for Cal/h). Using "what links here" suggests several of these are not used (I'm too confused to work out which at the moment), and that possibly explains why the existing templates {{convert/cal/h}} and {{convert/kcal/h}} give incorrect conversions, I think. Template:Jcttop/core/sandbox

Could you look over the top half of this template? If you look at the testcases, when it produces a hatnote, it is adding an extra line break between the hatnote and the table. I've been staring at it for a couple hours and I can't find any line break. Thanks. –Fredddie™ 07:03, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

ConvertUsage

I just had another look at User:WOSlinker/ConvertUsage and it is very useful. I wonder if the redirects should be in a separate table (I can easily do that kind of edit if you wanted)? I started having a look at which units have a missing unit type. It looks like my use of "energy density" for units like J/g is not correct. See energy density (energy per unit volume) which mentions specific energy (energy per unit mass), but the latter also mentions "Energy density of food" saying J/g is used for that. So BTU/cuft and similar should be "energy density", I guess. While trivial (it can easily be changed at any time), it's irritating. Perhaps "energy per mass" and "energy per volume" would be sufficient for our needs. That name would only be displayed as an error when a conversion specifies incompatible units, so the simple name might be best despite any scientific imprecision. What do you think? Questions:

  1. The energy density needs to be split (per mass/volume), and we can use "per unit mass" as for cost, or just "per mass". I like brevity, but the former is probably better?
  2. Should "per volume" be renamed "per unit volume"?
  3. Should "population density" be split, or just renamed "per unit area"?

I've finished doing all that (but not splitting the redirect table—not sure if that's useful). I made several name changes, including making the "per" names consistent (after writing out both alternatives and comparing, I thought "per unit" was better).
Originally, I put the sections in the conversion data in a "logical" order, but it's too hard to find things now, so I intend putting them in alphabetical order. I will probably also put all the units in each section in alpha order (I'll adapt a script I have to do the alpha ordering—shouldn't take too long, but I'll leave it for now).

Some of those units are actually about the amount of exhaust gas generated per distance traveled, and I'm pondering whether they should be in a separate section. Convert progress continued

I just changed the way "should be" unit codes are handled and for compatibility used <code> around the units, for example:

Use <code>L/100 km</code> not <code>L100km</code> → Use L/100 km not L100km

However, it looks like this (the current template is also shown):

{{convert/sandboxlua|1|L100km}} → 1 L100km[convert: unknown unit]
{{convert|1|L100km}} → 1 L100km[convert: unknown unit]

The module gives an ugly result, and I think removing the code tags is all that's needed, but before I do that I thought I would ask if you think any simple style should be applied.

BTW I spent the best part of the last three days fixing and checking everything so the redundant data could be removed from the conversion data. It had a dramatic effect on the module size (it's size has decreased by 24%, and it now displays correctly at Module:Convertdata). However, it does not appear to have had a helpful effect on speed, although more tests would be needed to determine that as there is quite a lot of variability. Thanks for the above; you've probably seen that I used that. I'm looking at large scale units and am curious about something in the result for units like {{convert/e3t}} when abbreviated.

The nowiki output is:

Amazing sleuthing, thanks. It doesn't work here either, but taking that hint, I tried Internet Explorer 8.0 and it works there. I then tried:

which IE8 copies as:

Module naming

I noticed a discussion (I think here) where it was suggested that related modules should be subpages of the main module. That seems a good idea which I have been wondering about that since noticing that the reference manual (here) was changed to promote that procedure. Specifically, the ref used to mention Module:Convertdata in an example of loading a data table, but it now uses Module:Convert/data (a subpage). Do you have an opinion on that? Assuming it's desirable, I was thinking I may as well move the page soon. Infobox station

I just saw your module addition to Template:Infobox station, which looks very nice. Could you please restore the default image size to 300px, as it was until several months ago? No consensus was reached in this discussion to reduce to the current 290px. While this may seem like a minor issue, many route diagram templates and other templates used in infoboxes are based on that 300px standard, and so in some cases I've had to hard-code images sizes which defeats having the whole default size parameter. Template:Age in years and months

Thanks for working on this. I copied your version from the sandbox to the main template and tested it using Australian Labor Party (table in section "ALP federal parliamentary leaders") and Liberal Party of Australia (table in section "Liberal federal leaders"). It worked for the latter, where the line for Malcolm Fraser (#6) turned into "7 years, 11 months, 11 months" because I wrote ", 11 months" at the end in plain text. So all good there. At Australian Labor Party, the line for Andrew Fisher (#2) turned "8 years" into "8 years, 12 months". If you decide to try again, the parameters for the "8 years, 12 months" output look like this, {{age in years and months|1907|10|1|1915|10|27}}, and results in "Error: Need valid year, month, day" with the sandbox code. There's no magic being done in that template is there? That is, it is not accurately counting days per the calendar, with 29 days in February 2004, but only 28 in 2005, and so forth? If no magic is being done, and the age is simply based on 365.25 days per year with each month being one twelfth of that, I could write a very simple module (Module:Age?) to do the work. There is nothing special in the template. The logic used in the template could be transfered to a Lua version. However, there are other age versions at Category:Date mathematics templates to consider, so if a Lua version is done, it may be worth including different output options. -- WOSlinker (talk) 14:23, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
I got bold and (after a lot of checking), created Module:Age and edited {{Age in years and months}} to invoke it. Please have a look at the "TODO" in the module because I'm not sure what link and category should appear for an error (and if the category is used, it would need to be fixed to be a subcat of something). In the end, I made the code check each date exactly (for example, 2004-02-29 is valid, but 2005-02-29 is not). I think the old template accepted any date, but the new version will display an error if invalid. The code could be extended to handle more age formats, if needed. Some real convert progress

I've done a massive amount of work in the last two weeks and have fixed a number of problems. I just uploaded the new stuff, and you will see that it is doing much better in all the testcases except for misc and dualunit. There are some rounding problems that I have been ignoring, but I'll investigate them soon, and will also look at the remaining unknown units. Other major problems that I'll get around to are mutiple input units (2|ft|6|in), and some of the complex units like Mach and hand.

Fixing the fuelconsumption stuff required several new features that I'll have to document later. While doing that I found that the templates output wikilinks like [[mile]], rather than [[mile|mile]], as both the templates and previous versions of the module do for most other units. Therefore, I put some code into the module to clean up all wikilinks, but the result now is that a lot of tests which used to be "Exact Match" are now "Link" because the template is outputting, for example, [[acre|acre]] while the module is outputting [[acre]].

There are quite a few differences in the testcases that are due to glitches in the templates. One of those is that the module consistently outputs 'µ' (Unicode MICRO SIGN), while the templates sometimes output 'μ' (GREEK SMALL LETTER MU)—for example, at mole. Module:Convert

I have added testcases: options, options2, and tables. The only differences between the template and the module in options and options2 are due to problems in the template (in options2, the "33-billion-cubic-metre" difference is due to the template using &#45; instead of "-").

Examining the tables page shows the template has a flaw. Putting {{convert|5000|m|mi|disp=table|sortable=on}} into Special:ExpandTemplates shows that it outputs the hidden sort key before "align=right", whereas it should be inserted before the value. Looking at the html source for the tables page shows that there is no hidden sort key; also, the "align=right" does not work.

The second table at the tables page uses the module, and I believe it is outputting correct wikitext. However, the Javascript sorting is confused by the tricky table syntax and when you click column N, it uses column N-1 to sort. I don't know if that is my error in formatting, or if it is a sort bug that should be reported somewhere.

I have lots of fiddly things to work on, but they are mostly minor, with some irritating rounding differences, some additional units, and other stuff. I think all supported options have been correctly implemented (I've used a regex to extract all the options mentioned in pages like the template FAQ and talk archives). There are still lots of things the module cannot do, such as converting dates or handling "convert/3". Johnuniq (talk) 04:59, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

I'll be doing significant refactoring for at least a couple more weeks so it won't be soon. Apart from what I mentioned, I'm planning to make it easier to translate messages for use on another wiki by creating Module:Convert/text with (almost) all the text that can be displayed. I imagine the idea of replacing the template with the module would lead to quite a degree of hesitation, if not resistance—I'm a bit hesitant myself! We'll see. One practical issue from using the module would be that the tracking templates won't work, and I don't see any other way (apart from an excruciating search of the all-pages dump) to know which pages are using what features.
In case you have any thoughts, I'll mention something on my mind (I might ask at VPT later). Since September 2012, {{ntsh}} outputs a hidden sort key of 19 digits. The technique is very clever (I copied it into the module), but I wonder if the Javascript that does the sorting would think "that's numeric, so a numeric sort is needed", but the script would then find that the numbers overflow with unknown consequences. I was thinking I should convert the initial digit to a corresponding letter to force it to always be an alpha sort (which is how the sort key is supposed to work). So it seems to me like you may be an excellent person to have in the discussion we're having on how to properly split an article, and then properly updating WP:SPLIT to reflect what we've learned. I think I'm not the only one who's a bit confused about how this template is to be used and what the final result should look like.

I'm actually an old computer geek, myself, and pretty good at writing documentation, so I can certainly help there ... but where we're weak is understanding specifically what the template is calling for.

I'll also be inviting contributors of Template:Split from to our discussion, so we can have a full understanding and agreement on this.

USRD banner

On Template:WPBannerMeta/Conversion, does the comment regarding {{USRD}} mean that the sorting built into the template now doesn't play nice with DEFAULTSORT? Would it be easier to scrap the USRD code and handle sorting like every other project? Hi. Thanks for the edit. (Just saw it in my watchlist.) Only I think the default size for screenshot is not set to optimal value. Editing trend shows that the default size for screenshot is 300px. Module:InfoboxImage again

Hello, WOSlinker. Is it possible to add an additional parameter for a file ending to Module:InfoboxImage, so that not only works 

{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{image|}}}|size={{{image width|}}}|sizedefault=frameless|alt={{{caption|}}}|suppressplaceholder=yes}}

but also 

{{#invoke:InfoboxImage|InfoboxImage|image={{{image|}}}|ending={{{image ending|}}}|size={{{image width|}}}|sizedefault=frameless|alt={{{caption|}}}|suppressplaceholder=yes}}

? If image ending isn't defined, it should work like now. And this parameter should accept jpg, jpeg, png, thus, without the point between the first part of the file name and the ending. frasl

A wikignome edited Module:Convert to replace &frasl; with the equivalent Unicode U+2044 (⁄) (diff). I see that {{frac}} (from where I stole the wikitext) still has &frasl;. I am happy with Unicode (and use − instead of &minus;), so there is no problem with the edit. However, I have no idea whether there is some reason that frasl might be preferred, so I thought I'd ask. Re the module: I'm still working on a few translation issues that have cropped up at the Bengali wiki—it looks pretty amazing, have a glance at some bn examples. Infobox UK place cy

However the infobox now looks like jumbled up wiki code when you open up any related articles eg w:cy:Lynemouth; I'm really surprised that you were happy to leave these Northumberland villages articles in such a mess. I asked for opinions about the convert tracking category names at VPT and got a response that supports the terse names I originally chose. I want to make a decision about that, and I'm wondering whether the fact that you created the category pages means you endorse those names. Or, do you prefer the "Pages with" style (shown here)? No, I never did anything of the sort. I spotted the error by going to Category:Convert dimension mismatch and seeing the page in the category and then going to that page and finding the issue & fixing it. Scottish Islands assessment classes

Need some help with this if you have a chance.

I decided the 'NA Class' was getting too big at User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/Scottish Islands so I created Category:Template-Class Scottish Islands articles, Category:Disambig-Class Scottish Islands articles and recreated Category:Category-Class Scottish Islands articles. I then added the relevant parameter for an example of each at e.g. Rousay. I ran the bot but nothing happened, so I added the cat manually at Rousay as well. No joy. I went back to Template:WikiProject Scottish Islands to see how I'd fixed that before, which is here. However, the next edit was yours amending the whole structure to 'Convert to WPBannerMeta' - at which point I confess I was out of my depth. The problem seems to be that User:WP 1.0 bot is not recognising the parameters 'Category' 'Diambig' and 'Template' but I don't know why. Any assistance gratefully received. Cleanup/reduction of Convert subtemplates

I have begun massive cleanup of the Convert subtemplates. Thank you for ed-protecting so many of them. Already temperature ranges have been fixed. We have been planning (for years) to delete hundreds of the suffix "-Na" pages, which Jimp has also done for 1,000 of the suffix "-Imp" (or "-USre"). Although the Lua version seems promising, there are thousands of options to compare, and we will rely on a Template:Convert/old to support prior features, even if/when the Lua version gets accepted. Meanwhile, I need to remove suffix "-Na" from all unit-data subtemplates, including:

Currently, the plan is to finally fix all tiny glitches, which various users have noted during the past years, then have the Lua version match the corrected subtemplates. Meanwhile, I plan to check usage of the interwiki Convert templates on Arabic WP, Japanese WP, and Vietnamese WP, which are mirrored on the markup-based Convert. Thanks again for making it easy to update Convert, and I will ask admin Jimp if wants to remove the hundreds of "-Na" display subtemplates. Module:Convert

Any chance you would be available to help fix problems that arise if Template:Convert is switched to use the module? The module has recently been copied to Simple and Commons and I have done a small amount of cleanup at each project, and everything looks good. However enwiki is vastly more complex, and your template wizardry may be needed if there are problems like complex infoboxes that call convert in a way the module doesn't expect.
