Cuisine of Assam

[edit]

I have deleted your edits on Cuisine of Assam because the article is about a cuisine, not an anthropological article on the food habits of the people of Assam. It would be best to look for the common threads of food styles that the people of Assam share among themselves. Are there beef styles that are characteristic of Assam (Korma, Kebab etc are influences from elsewhere). Thanks. Chaipau (talk) 20:58, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The pork dishes of north-east are indeed different from other pork dishes. Just like the beef dishes of Meghalaya and Naga hills are different from beef dishes elsewhere. They are part of the characteristic cuisine. I invite you to research a bit before you specify beef preparations as characteristic of the Cuisine of Assam. Just because pork is not eaten by Muslims does not mean that beef too has to be mentioned as a kind of quid pro quo. It is this sentiment that I am objecting to. Pork is not eaten by many Hindus either. Nevertheless, it is a characteristic of the cuisine which sets it apart from much of the sub-continent. Beef used to be eaten by the Ahoms till a few hundred years ago, but that tradition is lost and that can become part of the Cuisine of Assam if revived. Personally, I know of no beef preparations that are part of this food tradition in Assam, and I know many Hindus who have and continues to enjoy beef. You must understand that this is neither a rejection of the Muslims nor their food habits.
What you could attempt is present the special characteristic of the Muslim cuisine that sets it apart from the sub-continental cuisine. And do try to keep religion and food taboo aspects away from it. No cuisine is "pure" and there are always influences. But these influences do come together and share something(s) in common that speaks of an unique environ. Do try to look for commonness with the rest of the cuisine of Assam. Chaipau (talk) 16:37, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, some food taboos are dictated by religion, but food taboos do not constitute a cuisine. In fact it is a hindrance to a cuisine. If you would like to bring out some local characteristic of beef preparations in Assam that sets it apart from the rest of the south Asian influence, we could discuss this in the Talk:Cuisine of Assam. The article will be much richer for it. Please do add directly in that page and we will go from there. Also, please do sign your edits in talk pages by 4 tildas(~). Thanks. Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with ‎Pratima Barua Pandey. Please use the {{hangon}} template on the page instead if you disagree with the deletion. Although you may feel you have addressed the concerns raised by the speedy tag on the article you created you should still not remove the speedy tag itself. An admin will review the tag, your explanation on the talk page and review the changes. Ros0709 (talk) 19:06, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
