Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, MWMProductions. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Mark Wood (violinist), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. (bojo)(they/them)(talk) 23:53, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! My name is Laura Kaye and I'm Vice President of Mark Wood Music Productions. I'm also Mark's wife and partner in all of our business ventures. Someone reported to us earlier today that this Wiki page indicated that Mark died. This is untrue and so I created an account so I could correct that horrible error and any additional errors (I've found MANY). The entire Teacher area, for example, refers to him in the past tense. MWMProductions (talk) 00:00, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website, I have blocked this account from editing. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable, regardless of the username that you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

Thank you. Alexf(talk) 02:27, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

It's a shame that anyone can make changes to someone's Wikipedia page without their knowledge and with no basis in fact. Yes, I represent Mark Wood, whose page this is, but someone edited his page saying he had DIED, which he most assuredly has not. We will all now have to be much more vigilant in checking this page regularly. This latest issue - one of MANY, btw - caused a lot of distress on many levels, especially to Mark's fanbase.MWMProductions (talk) 15:43, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

None of this is relevant to your violation of WP:USERNAME. It does indicate you've been violating WP:COI, though. Yamla (talk) 15:58, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Understood. Can you please tell me exactly what I edited that violates WP:COI?MWMProductions

You've been editing Mark Wood (violinist) without the mandatory disclosure, as per WP:COI. There's no way you read WP:COI and didn't see a problem, so please take the time to read what we've linked you to. You've also been editing in violation of WP:PROMO. --Yamla (talk) 18:26, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I'd like to change my username to singviol to comply with your initial request. MWMProductions (talk) 12:58, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This does not address the conflict of interest concerns. 331dot (talk) 13:23, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You know perfectly well that your username is only one small part of the problem here. --Yamla (talk) 13:05, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I'm so sorry but if you'll be so kind as to tell me exactly what I changed that's not acceptable and if you reinstate editing privileges, I will correct. As stated earlier, the only reason I made changes was that someone inaccurately edited this page to indicate that Mark Wood - my husband and business partner - had DIED. They also changed much of his Wiki page to the past tense. This needed to be corrected, as I'm sure you'll agree. If, in the process of doing so, I violated something, just tell me exactly what that is and I'll correct it. Please understand I was just trying to correct a MAJOR inaccuracy. Accept reason:

I have renamed your account and will remove the block. Please proceed as discussed, and ask if you have questions. 331dot (talk) 01:03, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Part of the problem is your username- which you've already proposed to replace- but the other part is how exactly you should go about correcting incorrect information. Certainly we want the article to correctly reflect the fact that your husband is alive- and while in most cases those with a COI shouldn't directly make edits, that might have even been okay here- but that wasn't all you did. We would like you to tell us the proper way someone with a COI should offer their suggestions for edits(see WP:COI). 331dot (talk) 15:19, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I 100% understand that, as Mark Wood's partner, there is a COI and I would never have made any edits if it were not for the fact that someone else edited his Wiki article with inaccurate information, which caused some very serious issues around here. While I removed things pertaining to his no longer being alive, I also removed past tense issues and corrected a few other inaccuracies (such as the number of schools he works with, the fact that we have a daughter - not a son - which I also added under family members). This is not the first time Mark's Wiki article has been edited by a random individual and that we've had to do damage control. If there is a protocol for reporting these inaccuracies, please let me know so we can follow it in future if this happens again. Please advise. Although your COI article refers to requesting permission to make edits, I have no idea how to do that. Would it be here on the talk page? 2601:500:8781:AC24:A051:A1EE:F1B3:EE78 (talk) 21:05, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI does describe what you can do, under "COI editing" with the bullet "you may propose changes". In the case of an article you typically would use the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 09:31, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OH!!! NOW I understand. So, in future, if something requires an update or a change, I promise to use this talk page to propose it and disclose my affiliation with Mark Wood. Is that acceptable? Are you able to remove the block now? I proposed a change in username as well, since that was also requested. Please advise and thank you for clarifying. MWMProductions (talk) 15:19, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Singviol" is taken as a username, please propose something else. 331dot (talk) 23:18, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know if any of these are available. I'm fine with any of them. :)
