Southwest Colorado map[edit]

I'd like to know where you got the map of southwest Colorado that you added to the southwestern Colorado page. Image:SW_Colorado-counties-map.PNG I need an authoritative source for which counties are considered southwest Colorado. Wikipedia isn't authoritative enough, but maybe the place you got the map from would be. Please email me at chittenden_l at fortlewis dot edu. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lchittenden (talkcontribs) 16:36, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Utah map images[edit]

Can you provide sources for the images Image:UTAH SR-95.png, Image:UTAH SR-276.png and Image:UTAH SR-274.png? Zach (Sound Off) 04:42, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PD-UTGov[edit]

All images marked with Template:PD-UTGov have been marked for speedy deletion, and the template is under debate for deletion at WP:TFD. The template indicated a license which did not permit commercial use, and images which cannot be used commercially are not allowed to be uploaded after May, 2005. Please reference the third pillar (Wikipedia:Five pillars, and thanks for contributing. --Mm35173 20:10, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Images from UDOT[edit]

They were all tagged with the (now-deleted) {{Template:PD-UTGov}} which states that the relevant State authority only licenses them very restrictively. Specifically, as this TfD debate says, they are only available with "no modification allowed, [for] personal or informational use only". All of those restrictions make it not possible to retain the images, but particularly the personal use only one: the GFDL licenses all content to anyone for any reason, including commercial purposes while the license for these images does not allow commercial use. Jimbo Wales has said [1] that we are to remove any such images on sight. You were notified of the impending deletion of both the template and the images on the page you request: User talk:WikiDon/Imagearchive, although rather recently.

If you can find GFDL compatible images to replace them, that'd be fine. -Splashtalk 00:38, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No. You misunderstand. The Wikimedia Foundation does not and has not ever charged for the use of any of its content. It is given away completely for free to anyone who wants it. See answers.com for example, which mirrors the English Wikipedia along with many many other sites that do so — without having to pay the Foundation or Jimbo anything at all. But, the terms of the GFDL do allow commercial use. So those who take our content could decide to use it to make money and such use, which is allowed, would be incompatible with the terms of non-commercial use only licenses. That's all. -Splashtalk 01:08, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image:UTAH SR-24.PNG[edit]

What is the source of this image? --SPUI (talk) 10:24, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the statement? It says "if the documents are not modified in any respect", which is decidedly non-free. --SPUI (talk) 10:45, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please read derivative work. --SPUI (talk) 11:01, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey congratulations on the release, I admire your tenacity. I don't know how the image should be tagged, you probably can't release it into the GFDL since there are still restrictions on its use. Should probably wait until the letter gets to Wiki and see what the people who really know this stuff say. Looking at the spelling and grammar in the release I think the state of Utah (in which I live) needs to upgrade its personnel a little. Bob Palin 20:56, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see they got deleted again, to tell you the truth that's what I expected to happen but it was worth a try. Maps are difficult, we are going to have to draw our own! Bob Palin 03:21, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free images[edit]

Why did you delete Image:UTAH SR-12.PNG and Image:UTAH SR-24.PNG? These are MAPS not photos, maps need to be modified to fit the specific area talked about. I ask Jimbo if I got a letter for copyright release, we could use it. What is the deal? I didn't think that I had it tagged right and ask for help with the right tag???? So if we have a letter of release we still can't use it? WikiDon 03:46, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid we can only use them if they're released under the GFDL or a similar free licence. Images only wikipedia is allowed to use are speedy deletion candidates, as they severely hamper the free redistributability of the encyclopaedia we're making. --fvw* 03:51, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS Just mark it GFDL and call it good? WikiDon 03:46, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a very bad idea unless the copyright owner expressly licenced them under that licence. --fvw* 03:53, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The State of Utah is giving "me" the right to modify the image, I then create the new image that I want, and to that image "I" give it the GFDL tag for free distribution. WikiDon

It doesn't work that way. You're creating a derived work from their copyrighted material, so the redistribution and copying of the end result is limited both by how you and how the state of utah allow it, i.e. it's more restricted or at the very least just as restricted. --fvw* 03:59, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

So what can I do? WikiDon

You can either ask them to licence it under the GFDL or creative commons (once you explain what and why you'd be surprised how many people say yes), find a different source for a similar map that will licence it under an acceptable licence, or you can make your own (you won't be able to make a map anywhere near as nice unless you're an experienced cartographer, but maybe you can make something that will get the gist of the matter across). If none of that works, the article is just going to have to survive without a map for a while. --fvw* 04:32, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Where do I find the text for "GFDL" or "creative commons" that would be appropriate to send them? WikiDon
It's linked off the GFDL article, but Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission might be the best place to get you started. Good luck! --fvw* 04:45, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ACD photos[edit]

You've got some cute ACD photos on your user page & talk pg for ACD, but either missing license tags or one has a tag that doesn't seem to exist. Any chance you could add the appropriate GFDL or whatever? Thanks. Helps me to keep the wp dog photo list up to date. Elf | Talk 05:02, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WP isn't allowing anyone to upload (easily, anyway) photos with that kind of tag (for use on WP but nowhere else) any more. However, for use on one's user page, I'm guessing that such a tag would be commonly used. For the moment, I'd put maybe {{Copyrighted}} but add a clear statement that the image is for use only on your user page and that might be OK. I'm going to ask this question at Wikipedia_talk:Image_copyright_tags#Images_for_use_only_on_user_pages_or_talk_pages. Elf | Talk 21:39, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Images for user pages only[edit]

I *think* you were the one who asked me about a month ago about copyrighted photos that maybe you'd want to have on your user page but not release for general use (or at least that I interpreted that way). There now appears to be a copyright tag for that; see this new tag. Elf | Talk 22:38, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Carlingford Lough.PNG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. Image copyright problem with Image:DnkImg005.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:DnkImg005.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. (er, and sorry this template is so patronizing)  — TheKMantalk 10:48, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Belfast-Lough.PNG[edit]

WikiDon,

I edited the image of Ireland ( the Island) to include the capitals and I outlined Belfast Lough. But when uploading, I am not sure which copyright notation to use. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi, WikiDon, your image of Belfast Lough has been altered. Your original was more suitable for the article on the Belfast Blitz. So I restored your image as Belfast-Lough-2.png. Thanks for the image, Regards ClemMcGann 21:19, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

JhnDyDam2.jpg[edit]

The image, Image:JhnDyDam2.jpg is pretty nice. A US army corps of engineers photo is public domain, but could you provide a source for the image? I found a source that helps prove it was a corps picture, but not one of the same resolution as you provided. If you possibly remember where you got the image from, could you put it on the image description page (preferably in place of the lousy URL I put)

Non-free use disputed for Image:CityoABQ.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CityoABQ.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:43, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Rota.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rota.PNG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 17:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did you make this image by yourself? If yes, please tag it {{GFDL-self}} or any similar free-use license with self licensing.--Jusjih (talk) 03:21, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:CNH.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CNH.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:02, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:OSU.PNG[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:OSU.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 14:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Time Cover in 1924-08-25.JPG)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Time Cover in 1924-08-25.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads.
