Welcome!

Hello Wikizach/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --Pharos 19:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • By the way, comments about the article, such as "I'll give more information later" go on the discussion page. Thanks.--Pharos 19:10, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CNN work[edit]

File:Cnn1.jpg It's refreshing to see a member of the professional media willing to volunteer with Wikipedia. We already have a fair number of newspaper reporters I'm aware of. If you want to do something simple that would be greatly appreciated here, take a couple of pictures while you're in Chad and put them here under a free use copyright. Thanks.--Pharos 19:29, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Looking forward to your contributions! --12.111.30.89 17:25, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just another note from somebody hoping you can get a slew of photographs of the villages you visit and such - Wikipedia suffers from never having photographs less than 20 years old of African regions, politicians and such. Sherurcij (talk) (bounties) 17:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Citing sources[edit]

See Wikipedia:Citing sources for the complete guide. For simple things, you can just mention the source of a fact in the writing, give an external link if it's an online source, or mention your source in a 'References' section at the bottom.--Pharos 00:14, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chad-Sudan War[edit]

Could you specify:

  • which city the fighting is taking place in
  • who the fighting is between- RDL vs Chad or Sudan vs. Chad or Janjaweed vs. Chad or RDL, Sudan, and Janjaweed vs. Chad

Thanks. KI 04:10, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Iraqi elections[edit]

Nope. Not an Iraqi expatriate. I reside elsewhere, but I'm strongly committed to independence of the whole region. KI 04:12, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Quebec[edit]

I think separating would be an economic disaster for Quebec. Owen× 15:00, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RfA[edit]

Hey there!

Regarding your recent RfA, I have a couple things to note. Firstly, your RfA was improperly formatted; you should follow the instructions. Secondly, in any case, you're really too new to be requesting adminship...we don't have enough edits from you to really get to know you! I'd suggest trying again in two or three months. —BorgHunter (talk) 17:05, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza elections[edit]

Hi Wikizach! Thanks very much for your offer of help with the Esperanza elections.

Here's some things that need doing!

  1. Visit the talk page of the Membership List and join Esperanza! The main page is locked until voting is complete, but adding your name to the list there makes you a member!
  2. Put Wikipedia:Esperanza/December 2005 elections/Vote on your Watchlist (visit the page, then click "watch" on the row of buttons at the top-middle of your screen. That way you'll see the most recent changes to the page.
  3. When you see a change, it's probably someone voting. Check the person making a vote is listed on this page. If they're not, edit the page, cut the vote out and re-post it on this page instead. Then write to the person and very nicely tell them what you've done and why (ie they're not a member). Be careful - the membership list is in plain-text, whilst the votes are signatures: peoples' account names and signature names sometimes don't match!
  4. If all is well with the vote, check the tally on the right side of the page and see if it matches the number of votes. If it doesn't, edit this page and bring the tally up to date. This page uses wikitables - as you're new, these may be a bit daunting, so feel free not to do this!
  5. If you spot a change has been made to the voting page and it looks like vandalism (someone removing votes, blanking the page, adding nonsense etc), revert the vandalism by going into the edit history, choosing the last good edit, clicking the date of that edit, "edit this page" and save it. That goes back to the previous version. Put something like "rvv" (re-vert-vandalism) or "rv blanking" (re-vert blanking) as your edit summary.
  6. Voting is "approval voting". No-one may vote "against" or "neutral". All votes must be signed and dated: you may have to pick through the edit history if you find one that isn't, then write to that person and ask them to sign their vote with ~~~~ for the avoidance of doubt.
  7. Always assume good faith on behalf of voters and candidates. Errors are likely to be simple mistakes that anyone could make.

If you spot anything that looks a bit odd or you don't know what to do about something, ask any one of the other Elections Staff for help or advice. The person in charge is Flcelloguy, although we're all very happy to help. Thanks very much for volunteering! ➨ REDVERS 17:11, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there... I noticed the message you left on User talk:Sango123 about the esperanza elections. If you had of read the instructions carefully, you would realise that every member of Esperanza can vote for as many candidates as they wish. Thanks, FireFox 17:37, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

And another thing, sorry to bother you. As you are not an official member of esperanza yet (as the member list is protected) you cannot vote in the elections. Your vote has been removed. Thanks, FireFox 17:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, of course you can ask questions. If they have a statement subpage ask there, otherwise ask on their talk page. FireFox 17:59, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Nomination[edit]

You must understand, and though I appreciate your enthusiasm, that there's a huge gulf between being an experienced Wikipedia reader and an experienced Wikipedia editor. There are so many little things one has to catch on to. Being elected administrator always requires several months of solid editing beforehand, and after that is established I'll be glad to nominate you. In the meantime, you should know you're not missing out on a heck of a lot; as I said, it's just mostly maintenance tasks.

And I wish all health and safety to yourself and your crew in Chad.--Pharos 18:04, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Previous account?[edit]

Hello there. I know that you've only been here for nearly 4 days, but the contributions that you've made seem very experienced and non-newbie-ish. So I was just wondering if you've ever had a previous account, because you seem to have settled in very well if this is your first. Thanks, FireFox 15:14, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah right. Fair enough :) FireFox 16:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Try and get a consensus on the talk page - talk with the other editors and Wikipedians, and see what most people agree with and what other reliable sources are saying. I'm not too familiar with this topic, so I can't be of much help. If you wish, you can file a reqeusts for comment to gain other opinions from other Wikipedians. By the way, to link to an article, use two brackets [[like this]]; it seems like you only typed in one bracket in the message you left me. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 18:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I notice you're trying to conclude the Esperanza elections - don't worry about it, I'll take care of it. I need to check with the volunteers (you included) to see if you noticed any discrepancies, etc. before the tally can be officially certified. Thanks! (Also, you might want to check Image:Cnn1.jpg; it's at risk of being deleted.) Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 01:15, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Here's the message I've been copying to the elections volunteers:
Hello Wikizach; as you may be aware, the Esperanza elections are concluding, and you listed yourself as an election staff. Did any of you notice any discrepancies at all, and have you checked to make sure we have the correct tally? Thanks a lot! Flcelloguy (A note?) 01:28, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to have closed this vote nearly 24 hours early. - Amgine 01:45, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Signatures[edit]

You may be interested to know to change your signature... go to your preferences, then under nickname, tick the box saying "Raw signature" and in the box above it, label signature, enter a mixture of html and wiki markup to make your sig look nice. FireFox 16:58, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll deal with signitures later. How can I delete it? Wikizach 17:25, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You can't. Administrators can. Please leave any more messages for me on my talk page as I will not continue to check here. FireFox 17:28, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well done![edit]

Football AID[edit]

Thank you for participating in the Football AID vote this week.

Football World Cup has been selected as this week's collaboration. Please do help in working to improve it.

Esperanza Charter[edit]

We're not sure yet since it's still a fairly new process in regards to the charter. We'll be working on it though, and I want to make sure that both the advisory council and the membership at large have an equal say on what goes on in the group. Please let me and the other advisors know what you think should be done, we're here to help. karmafist 21:04, 1 January 2006 (UTC) P.S- You think it'd be possible to swing me a job at CNN? Although it's not my focus, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. karmafist 21:04, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much, and be careful over there. karmafist 21:14, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The charter can be amended by a referendum; please see Wikipedia:Esperanza/Charter#C._Amending_the_Charter_and_Referenda for the specific charter clause concerning this. What were you thinking needed to be changed? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 04:32, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey![edit]

Hey Wikizach, my username is Mysekurity, and Karmafist and I will be your coaches in Wiking. Firstly, I'd like to extend a big Esperanza/Wikipedia welcome, and not to sound cheesy, but check out the links posted above, they can be really helpful. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me, even about dumb questions (I honestly don't mind). In any event, if there's anything I can do to help, just ask myself or Karma, and we'll get right on it. Again, Welcome! -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 07:29, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:WikiDefCon[edit]

As there was lots of vandalism, I was wanting it on level 2. --ComputerJoe 10:02, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Short articles[edit]

Hi! Short articles are always welcome, but single-sentence "nanostubs" are generally deleted for a lack of content. May I impose on you to please expand the Nathanial Zack article before it's deleted again? Thanks and have fun! - Lucky 6.9 18:22, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone else has tagged it for speedy deletion, so you might want to hurry.  :) - Lucky 6.9 18:24, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Charter And Such[edit]

To my knowledge, the charter hasn't been touched or acted upon since its creation. Largely because we haven't done anything other than a few elections and little nice things on each others talk pages.

I think that's the issue here. Getting the Esperanza community as a whole involved in growing and reforming the organization into something much bigger and more effective towards spreading niceness around Wikipedia.

How was Cairo, by the way? karmafist 20:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Archives[edit]

My talk page is getting really full, how exactly can I make archive pages?

Thanks! Wikizach 22:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Check out Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page for some help on this. As you can see from my page, I use history archiving, but Redwolf24 and others use pagemoves. (It'll all make sense when you read the article). -Mysekurity(have you seen this?) 22:18, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
