It seems to me that it has produced more ash than the Mount St. Helens eruption, from what I remember. It SEEMS like a lot more to me! MSH had a much more violent initial outburst, but didn't last as long. From what I understand the Chaiten eruption is much smaller than Pinatubo ... so far. Based on the satellite pictures, it doesn't look to me like it will have much climate effect, as the ash plume dissipates rather quickly. I don't know if that really means much, though. It's supposed to be SO2 that does it, but it does seem like you should be able to see a persistent haze if it is going to block solar radiation. Too bad we don't have MODIS images for Pinatubo!--L mammel (talk) 06:07, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
