Clarification

Hi Willbb234,

Could you tell me more about why you thought Grow Business Intelligence was more promotional than an encyclopedia article? I tried to provide a useful resource so I'd like to know how to improve it. Any insight and tips on how to make it fit the guidelines would be much appreciated. Thank you. --Tyand2 (talk) 19:33, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

@Tyand2: Hi there. I will reply to your comment a little later in full, but for now please look at WP:PROMO (I am currently on mobile and will be on my laptop soon). Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:40, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi there Tyand2, sorry for the wait. I felt that the article you created was only there to promote and advertise the company - this is strictly not acceptable on Wikipedia as we have to write in a neutral point of view. You are welcome to write articles on Wikipedia, but we have to consider and write about all sides of a specific matter and try and give a fair and balanced presentation of information, which means not promoting companies, organsiations or individuals. If I were you, I would read through my article several times and ask myself whether the article seems to put the company in a particularly good fashion. of course, there are companies with few faults, but we cannot exaggerate the faults, nor try and reduce them. I hope that helps, if you have anymore queries or questions, please do reply. Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 16:28, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
Willbb234, that helps. Thank you! --Tyand2 (talk) 18:18, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello. I know you're busy, sorry to bother. Can you take the time to copy editing for this article? I really need your help. Thanks you very much. Xecvws (talk) 09:34, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

@Xecvws: I am currently copyediting 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans. You're best posting to the requests page on the guild of copyeditors. Regards, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 14:34, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for helping me with this project. I would highly appreciate if you could try using the script User:Uziel302/typo.js which enables correcting the typos in one click from the project page, both from desktop and mobile. Would appreciare any feedback. Thanks again, Uziel302 (talk) 05:38, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

@Uziel302: I used a script a while back which allowed me to correct typos in one click but when I came to doing it about 10 hours ago, the replace, remove etc. options were not there so I had to remove the ones I had corrected manually. I don't know if it was a bug in the script because I did purge my commons.js page and the typo page. Regards, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 06:22, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
It is sort of a bug, I changed the main script to support mobile view and it made the buttons appear at the bottom on desktop view. The script User:Matankic/typos.js was made by my friend and it allows you to have buttons both on mobile and desktop views. Thanks again. Uziel302 (talk) 06:30, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

New Question

Cleaning external links is fine, but ought you not place them somewhere (in the references, perhaps)? 46.242.9.199 (talk) 16:40, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Yes, however, the first link removed is not reliable as it is from a site where people can ask questions and anyone can answer (if I have interpretated the website correctly). I will add the second in as a reference. Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 16:44, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

NPP

You moved the article Landscape with a Pig and a Horse to draft for insufficient references. I have returned it to mainspace; it has indeed only a single reference, although it would be trivially easy to find many more. This certainly is not a good way to write articles, and the editor who has been writing these stubs has been talked to many times about it by me and by others--but nonetheless the single reference is sufficient evidence for the facts presented, and shows unquestionable notability . It therefore meets our requirements for stubs.

If an article this scanty is written about a clearly notable subject by a beginner, usually the best thing to do is to expand it a little. But since this editor is by no means a beginner, I and most other editors who have been involved with them, arelosing patience with expanding their work. DGG ( talk ) 18:13, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

A or An

Will:

The "rule" I follow is if the word starts with a consonant sound, "dare" for example I'd use an "a" and write "a dare". If it starts with a vowel sound, ODI in this case, it sounds like "OH DI" so use "an". Because One Day International sounds like "Won Day..." you should use an "a" before it. So it's how a word (or acronym in the case of ODI) sounds that determines the use of "a" or "an". It is not always "an" because the word begins with a vowel. Hope that helps. Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:11, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

@Twofingered Typist: thanks for the answer. I'm not sure what you concluded: would you write "a ODI" or "an ODI"? Sorry for the confusion, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 16:51, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
@Willbb234: Sorry for the confusion. Because ODI begins with an "OH" (vowel) sound - use an in front of it. If it begins with letters that don't form a vowel sound like "won" use a. Twofingered Typist (talk) 18:57, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Willbb234,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 816 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

Hello, Willbb234

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Onel5969 and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I’ve proposed an article that you started, Richard Freeman (physician), for deletion because it meets one of the relevant criterion. The particular issue can be located in the notice, that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to prevent the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

But, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the raised issues. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Onel5969}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

In answer to your question at User talk:Frank marine#ANI, you could file at WP:SPI if you want. Personally I wouldn't go ahead unless the new account got into at least two of the same problems as the old. For example, copyright violations, unlicensed uploads or edit warring. If it *is* the same person, at least they stopped marking their edits as 'minor'. Both the new and the old accounts completely fail to communicate. If the issue *does* go to SPI, you might be challenged to come up with some diffs of Oppufc making the same changes as Frank marine. EdJohnston (talk) 15:17, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

@EdJohnston: thanks a lot for the answer! If you don't mind, please could you give your opinion on the matter as to whether it is a sockpuppet? Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 17:25, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
Too soon to tell. If nothing they do is bad, then the question becomes less important. In general our articles on the Thai military seem to be improving, or at least, are getting more detailed. EdJohnston (talk) 17:29, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Ethnic cleansing in Chechnya

Hello:

I've had a look at Ethnic cleansing in Chechnya and would say that it actually needs a complete copy edit—two to three hours work. I'll leave it to you to request a copy edit from the GOCE or simply tag it with copyedit|date=December 2019 placed between {{ }} which will add it to the December list of articles that require editing on the portal page.

Deletion of Greek Helsinki Monitor

I fail to understand why the description of the work of the NGO and its international affiliations with supporting links is promotional, while, for example, this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_Helsinki_Committee or this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_Helsinki_Committee are not. Unless for some reason Wikipedia does not want to have an entry for the Greek Helsinki Monitor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Παναγιώτης Δημητράς (talkcontribs) 09:10, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@Παναγιώτης Δημητράς: Hi there. I understand your frustration. On Wikipedia, we write with a neutral point of view and I felt that the article you created didn't have that. Instead, I felt as if you were trying to promote the Greek Helsinki Monitor and the article would have to fundamentally re-written to not be promotional, so a Speedy Deletion was appropriate. In regards to the other articles, this essay should answer your concerns - basically, just because there are other articles with similar problems that are not deleted, it doesn't mean that that article can stay. And besides, the two articles that you have mentioned are written neutrally so have no reason to be deleted. You are more than welcome to recreate the article, but please read WP:NPOV thoroughly before you do so. Also, please read Your First Article as this contains some important information on how to write an article well and follow the guidelines. Could you please state whether you have any kind of conflict of interest (connection) with the Greek Helsinki Monitor? Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 12:45, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

I am the official representative of Greek Helsinki Monitor. Trust me we have absolutely no need to advertise in Wikipedia, we are well-established and recognized internationally. Just read the 5 December 2019 pages on the execution of two European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgments against Greece with references to GHM communications https://search.coe.int/cm/Pages/result_details.aspx?ObjectID=090000168098cffc and https://search.coe.int/cm/Pages/result_details.aspx?ObjectID=090000168098cffa. And/or the references to GHM in the ECtHR webpage https://hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng#{%22fulltext%22:[%22\%22Greek%20Helsinki%20Monitor\%22%22]} and in the Council of Europe webpage https://hudoc.exec.coe.int/ENG#{%22fulltext%22:[%22\%22Greek%20Helsinki%20Monitor\%22%22]} and in the UN Human Rights Committee webpage https://juris.ohchr.org/search/Documents (put "Greek Helsinki Monitor" in the keyword). I just so that Wikipedia would have wanted a purely descriptive page on our NGO. Never mind, I wont insist if you do not want such a page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Παναγιώτης Δημητράς (talkcontribs) 09:40, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

@Παναγιώτης Δημητράς: thank you. If you are going to create the article, which I strongly advise not to do as you have a conflict of interest, then you must conform to our Paid Contribution Disclosure. We welcome improvements to our encyclopedia, and I am glad that you are here, as you claim, in good faith, but it is simply impractical for you to create this article in a neutral way. I hope you understand, if you would like to discuss alternative options, then please reply. Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 09:51, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

I would appreciate being informed on the alternative options. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Παναγιώτης Δημητράς (talkcontribs) 11:21, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

@Παναγιώτης Δημητράς: please read till the end to see my opinion on which option I would advise.
  1. You can create the article yourself, although you will have to disclose you payment. Also this quote sums up what will be expected Paid editing is further regulated by a community guideline, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. This advises that those with a conflict of interest, including paid editors, are very strongly discouraged from directly editing affected articles. Additionally, under no circumstances can you promote or advertise. These rules will be strictly enforced and I will review your article and may ask other, more experienced editors to review the article as well.
  2. You can request the article to be written at Requested Articles, although you will have to wait a while for an editor to get round to writing your article.
  3. You can ask for someone to write an article, but this will usually be denied. Asking others to edit like this is usually frowned upon.
  4. You can create a short, neutral article and then propose further expansion on the talk page through an Edit Request. Alternatively, you can ask someone else to create the article, before proposing your changes. Bear in mind that you will have to write up the changes before proposing.
  5. Do nothing - if it is deserving of an article, then it usually has already been created. The reason the article you would like to make hasn't been created is probably because no editor has thought that it has sufficient notability to create.
Of all the options, I strongly recommend number 5. It may sound strange, but seriously, Wikipedia isn't a place to advertise or promote. Also, the page won't get very many views, thus making it a waste of time on your part. Additionally, the other options all have the risk of being deleted by the community, thus wasting your time. If you are to take action, then I recommend number 2 or number 4. I strongly recommend that you do not choose number 1 or number 3. Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:20, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

What I did was number 4 without the edit request as I was not aware of it. Please also stop mentioning I am paid, as I am not and it is borderline insulting. But as you think number 5 is most appropriate, which means GHM does not sufficient notability but does this to advertise, all that despite the links I provided you with, I find this laughable and I will no longer waste any more time. It is your loss not ours. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Παναγιώτης Δημητράς (talkcontribs) 22:54, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

December blitz bling

The Minor Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Willbb234 for copy edits totaling between 1 and 1,999 words (including rollover words) during the GOCE December 2019 Copy Editing Blitz. Congratulations, and thank you for your contributions! Miniapolis 22:03, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

Gonna give the Chechnya article a copy edit.

It's a proper mess at the moment. Give me a little time to try to wrap my head around the article and then rework it. Ethnic cleansing is a topic I'd prefer not to inadvertently distort. Jasphetamine (talk) 02:35, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

@Jasphetamine: if you need any help, just ask. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 16:59, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Hey, just for the record I'm not pinning the quality of the article on you at all. I don't want to come off as accusatory. I'm just very blunt about stuff. Jasphetamine (talk) 19:17, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

Typos in one click

The reason it failed to correct cylopes is that you have the old version of the script. In User:Willbb234/common.js change typos.js to typo.js. Uziel302 (talk) 09:35, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

@Uziel302: cheers, now changed. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 10:16, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
I still see typos.js. It can't find typos with this version. Uziel302 (talk) 07:24, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank You

Thanks for your kind words on my talk page. If you have a spare moment, I have an AFC that's awaiting review. Would you mind taking a look? All the best over this time of year to you and yours! MaskedSinger (talk) 06:40, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

@MaskedSinger: you're welcome! Sure I'll take a look, but give me a little time to do so. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 09:07, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
Do you mind taking another look? I removed the offending lines. MaskedSinger (talk) 14:07, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
@Willbb234: Could you please take another look at the page? Appreciate your concerns - just know any issues you have should be with my writing style and not me. If notability is the issue, please tell me. If not, whatever edits you make to make the page acceptable are completely fine by me. I'm not conflicted in any way. Thank you and Happy new year! MaskedSinger (talk) 05:58, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@MaskedSinger: is the third paragraph in the history section sourced? Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 09:24, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@Willbb234: Yes. My apologies. Thought it was there. Added it. Good catch! MaskedSinger (talk) 16:41, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
@Willbb234: Following up on this. MaskedSinger (talk) 17:17, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

@Willbb234

Thank you for reviewing the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology page. The page has been revised to reflect a more neutral point of view.

Thank you for the feedback.

Deletion of the page on SCAN test batteries for screening and diagnosis of auditory processing disorders

I fail to understand the rationale for deleting the description of this auditory test battery that is written in a neutral style, provides valuable information for persons with auditory processing disorders or those seeking information on how to get evaluated, is well documented and referenced by a number of neutral authors, etc.

I also wonder if you are an expert in the area discussed in the article and on that basis have in depth knowledge that helps you understand the content.

The page was deleted seconds after I posted it, so I wonder if you actually had time to read and consider the contents.

Please communicate with me to help me understand your objections.

Thank you for your reply,

Creating first Wikipedia page

Hi. The Wikipedia documentation on creating content is horrifically extensive, I doubt I'll have the time to read it all, looks like a college course. Is there some kind of training available for new contributors? Or one consolidated document instead of the content spread all over the place? I'd like to get a full picture of it all, like a pdf or something. Thank you. Lefooot (talk) 15:13, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Lefooot hi there. I know of the engaging Wikipedia:Adventure, which takes "under an hour", but covers all of the basics and is very helpful. If you are looking for something shorter, perhaps Wikipedia:Tutorial or Help:Editing or Wikipedia:Introduction all cover beginner information that is very helpful. I recommend you take a look at any of these and spend 20 minutes or so getting to know what Wikipedia is about and how our policies and guidelines work. If you have anymore questions, please do come back and ask. Thanks, Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 15:30, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Congratulations on crossing the 1,000 review threshold on NPP over the past year! I looked through a bunch of your recent reviews and it looks like you've been doing some good work. signed, Rosguill talk 22:39, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Given your good work so far and your not having asked me for help with reviews for quite some time, I'm going to go ahead and consider you as "graduated" from NPP mentorship. You can still feel free to ask me for advice whenever you want. signed, Rosguill talk 22:39, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Reminder: what links here

Hi, just a reminder to check "what links here" when you move an article to draft. The disambiguation page Jack Thompson had a link to Jack Thompson (Alabama politician) which you moved to draftspace. I've removed the link on Jack Thompson for now. Happy editing! Schazjmd (talk) 20:10, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
