Username block[edit]

Hello. Following the above discussion, I've blocked this username under the username policy, due to its similarity with the name of another established user editing the same article as you. If this is your real-life name please contact the volunteer team as mentioned in the policy with some proof of identity. Otherwise please create a new username. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:32, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The policy to which you have referred me indicates that I am allowed to edit using my real name. I choose to do so. It states:
"Do not register a username that includes the name of an identifiable living person unless it is your real name. This includes implying a relationship with another person. If you share a name with a well-known person, you need to make it clear that you are not the well-known person of that name. Such usernames may be blocked as a precaution, until proof of identity is provided."
I do not claim to be anyone famous with the name William M. Conway. It is not my intention to impersonate anyone famous named William M. Conway and I now declare openly that I am no such famous person. Which famous William M. Conway are you claiming that I am impersonating? How may I appeal this decision? --William M. Conway (talk) 15:16, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock Request[edit]

OK, I found the instructions to appeal my block at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:APPEAL#Requesting_to_be_unblocked

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

This block does not conform to the indicated policy and should be undone. I have not attempted to impersonate anyone and I hereby declare that I am not a famous William M. Conway. The person who blocked me stated that their reason for blocking me was that my name is similar to someone else. The stated policy does not list similarity to other user names as a valid reason for blocking my account. William M. Conway (talk) 15:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Yes, it does. — Joseph Fox 15:35, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

William M. Conway - the problem is that your username is very similar (way too similar) to that of a long term, established Wikipedia editor. Since you are active in the same area on Wikipedia, that may result in confusion. Please resolve that issue (e.g. by identification to the Foundation), or choose a totally different username (and not User:William M. Conway (Not Famous)) for which that confusion does not exist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:08, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fine kettle of fish.[edit]

Well, you ask me to create a new account, which I did, and now you have blocked that account as well. The stated reason is that my name happens to be close to someone else's name. In what way is my name similar to this other person and how different must I make it before you will allow me to edit? --William M. Conway (talk) 16:03, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first 14 characters and the last character are the same (leaving the other 2 different ..), ánd you are active in the same field ... best thing to do would be to either identify to the foundation, or to chose something utterly different. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:10, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. Your username is too similar to that of User:William M. Connolley, who is editing, very recently, the same article you're interested in. Please pick a new username which does not appear to resemble, impersonate, attack, or confuse with, directly or indirectly, other such editors. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:16, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For example, John Quiggly appears to be free. --Ebyabe talk - Repel All Boarders ‖ 16:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Come on, folks. Y'all can't be this naive. The user's name isn't "William M. Conway". Viriditas (talk) 01:40, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
