Newsletter ready for delivery

The October 2008 newsletter for WP:ALM is ready for delivery. It can be found here. Thanks. WesleyDodds (talk) 02:00, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Please don't mark these edits as minor; the new messages bar doesn't show up when that is done. (Also the pink on pink in your editnotice is hard to read.) Giggy (talk) 07:20, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Seconded. — E 07:24, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I'll fix that in the bot (it marks them as minor by default). Xclamation point 14:16, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

No, it was used it the redesign for WP:HUG, but it was reverted by Gurch. Xclamation point 14:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

UNDEERC

Can you let me know why you blocked this user? They're obviously the same person as Energy & Environmental Research Center (talk · contribs), whom you username blocked - but the instructions there state that it's OK to create a new account with an appropriate name and continue editing. The copyvio issue is another thing, but I think that's solvable with education, rather than a block. Please advise. east718 // talk // email // 22:45, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

The user is also posting copyvios and spam links too. It was probably better to warn them, it was bad judgement on my part. Xclamation point 02:00, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Mind if I unblock them and give them guidance about spamming/copyvio? I think a little bit of talking will resolve this better than a block and sockhunting expedition. east718 // talk // email // 02:13, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Sure. Xclamation point 02:21, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey. Can you approve my Mentifisto account on the server? I can't edit its talk page logged in the account itself so I thought of manually asking here (I intend to create accounts with this username as long as I can't easily log in my main account, but ultimately with both accounts. 'Mentifisto' as my ts acc username would be better I assume, though). -- Mentisock 12:35, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for applying to access the account creation tool. I have approved your request. You may now access the tool here. Before you do so, please read the tool's guide to familiarize yourself with the process. You may also want to join #wikipedia-en-accounts on irc and/or the mailing list. Keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse may result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for your participating in the account creation process. -·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 21:13, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Bot Error

Hi Soxred I mean X! :P, I just noticed that your Admin Bot made an error, when it uploaded Image:Yasser-arafat-1999.jpg it did not add the license tag to the image as required by policy (I only noticed it becuase my bot (User:MifterBot) which checks recently uploaded images for license tags, kept crashing and sending me an error report saying that "Image:Yasser-arafat-1999.jpg lacks a license but the Image page is protected tagging is not possible", and being that my bot does not know how to handle protected images it just shut down on me when it saw the Image :P), I think that this may have something to do with the fact that the Image page had existed prior to your bot locally uploading the Image, because in the upload comment box, this appears:

({{C-uploaded}} This image was copied from da.wikipedia.org. The original description was: Yasser Arafat. København. 3. maj 1999 Den palæstinensiske leder commons:Yasser Arafat besøger Danmark, herunder commons:Udenrigspolitisk Nævn i commons:Folketinget. ©1999 Hans Jørn Storgaard Andersen == Henvisninger == http://helledegn.dk/ commons:da:Billede:Yasser-arafat-1999.jpg {{GFDL}} commons:Category:Yasser Arafat commons:category:keffiyeh commons:Category:1999)

And that text should be on the Image page not in the upload description/comment, but I think that this happened, because if you look at the history of the image, you can see that the Image page existed before your bot locally uploaded it, which caused the text that should appear on the Image page itself to appear in an upload comment, because, if an Image page exists before you upload an image, than all the text that you entered into the info box on the upload form just goes into an Image upload comment not onto the actual page to prevent the previous page content from being removed. Thanks and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 19:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

I believe I have fixed it. Thanks! :) Xclamation point 20:49, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

MPUploadBot fail

FYI, MPUploadBot missed today's POTD. Can you look into it? Thanks. howcheng {chat} 17:02, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, Rjd0060 tells me the bot doesn't do POTD. Can I ask why? howcheng {chat} 17:03, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
It should do POTD... I think it is failing because the page already exists (but not the image), so it is accidentally skipping the page. I thought I fixed that, though. Xclamation point 20:58, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

InputBox

Hi, am I right in thinking that the new functionality of InputBox is due to your code? If so, well done, and perhaps you can explain why the hidden parameter doesn't work with the commenttitle format. For example I would like to do this:

and I would like the box to be hidden but the section title to be preloaded with "New redirect request". I suppose this isn't possible yet. MSGJ 12:34, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Admin hopefuls

Hi - Are you done with User:X!/Addshore UPage? This page is categorized into Category:Wikipedia administrator hopefuls which makes you show up in the already admin section of Wikipedia:List of administrator hopefuls. This isn't a big problem, but if you could either delete the page or uncategorize it that'd be great. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:51, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

MPUploadBot blocked indefinitely

I've blocked this bot indefinitely. It needs re-evaluation by BAG and the community. It has a number of issues:

  1. Image:Mary1 by Eworth.jpg was apparently never protected
  2. Image:The Wood of the Self-Murderers.jpg was never protected by the bot
  3. The bot uploaded (twice?!) Image:Information icon.svg over the original (that image is used on over 100,000 pages!)

This bot deals directly with our "front door," so to speak. The Main Page is viewed thousands of times per minute. Bots simply cannot screw up with the protection of an image on it — it's too risky.

Personally, I'm of the view that this bot should be deprecated entirely, but that's an issue for BAG and the community to decide. Thanks. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:24, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok, it didn't upload and protect those first two images, because it was killed (as it took up a lot of memory). I'm working on a solution. Xclamation point 03:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
So let's see, I think I have fixed all 3 problems. I'll see what the rest of the BAG thinks. Xclamation point 04:12, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

It is important for all Wikipedians to be communicative. This is especially true for administrators, the criteria for which includes good communication skills. You may not have thought that my question deserved a response. I find that rude. You may not have known the answer to my question; stating that would be fine. However archiving threads and letting go unanswered, questions made in good faith, is not acceptable in my opinion. Please do not do this again. MSGJ 18:16, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
I apologize it's been so long to respond, I didn't see a question immediately there. When I saw the new message, I was in a hurry, and I never got around to reading it properly. Answering your question, the new functionality is due to the code I contributed. I've had some users ask me abotu a hidden parameter, and when I get a change, I'll go see if I can implement it. Xclamation point 21:24, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Fixed. Xclamation point 21:54, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, and sorry if my response seemed like an over-reaction. Might I respectfully suggest that you consider using User:MiszaBot III to archive your talk page because the default option is that threads with no reply are not archived. Can I ask what you mean when you say fixed? What have you actually done because I see no obvious differences. Thanks again, MSGJ 12:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
I use ClueBot III mainly because it's easier, and also because it allows a page with a list of all archives. By "fixed", I mean that the code in the Subversion repository has the hidden parameter, but it is not live on Wikimedia yet. Xclamation point 13:13, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Understood, cheers. MSGJ 09:35, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed your bot blanked WP:CHU. I almost blocked it for doing so, but then I realized that that was an hour ago and not a minute ago like I initially thought. Just thought I'd come and point out this anomaly so you can look into it. Thanks. Useight (talk) 19:08, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

And I just found out that it has happened before. Useight (talk) 19:09, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

SoxBot template fixes

Someone brought to my attention that one of the things that SoxBot does is capitalize the first letter of templates in articles. For example, if I were to add {{cleanup}} to an article, SoxBot would come around and change it to {{Cleanup}}. Is this the case? Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:36, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Not really, I don't know of it doing that... Xclamation point 20:58, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Checkuser block

Hey- thanks for this. I'm not sure it's necessary to block the IP for 4 months, though - it seems to be a dynamic IP, and will probably rotate to someone else fairly soon. I think as long as the named account is blocked, and the IP is blocked for 24 hours or so, that should be enough (if the IP or a related one starts being used again, it should be pretty easy to identify and block). Sorry to bug you - just thinking about reducing collateral damage. Thanks again. MastCell Talk 06:14, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I've unblocked for 1 week, that should be enough. 24 hours seems too short. We block vandals for more than that on a first offense. Xclamation point 13:06, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. Easm

Hi,

I'm the author of the easm project and the wiki page I created. The purpose was to allow people to google define:easm to get a definition from wiki and then proceed to learn more about the project. As far as I understood, this wasn't spam - simply a informative resource for a project categorised as it was.

Can this page be restored? What is the policy?

Kind regards,
