Regarding stock quotes on the portal[edit]

You're right - the oral tradition of many martial arts causes big problems in having reliable, verifiable sources... but in many cases there are sources (Such as Sun Lu Tangs writings on Taiji, Xingyi and Bagua) - but there is then the additional problem of translation, particularly of archaic foreign languages! :) We must do the best we can, and work hard on finding good references -- Medains 08:17, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Business and Economics[edit]

Yeah I was considering it, but two things made me reconsider. First of all, there was no article for the news item on WikiNews. Second of all, the DJIA reached its all-time high a few times already this week. There's no point in constantly adding news items about the average reaching its all-time high. Also, you don't use photoshop to make a barnstar. Most barnstars are already custom-made and all you have to do is put in the template. See WP:Barnstars for more. Aerican Empire Speedy Delete[edit]

Hello Xlegiofalco, I'm the primary editor of the Aerican Empire article which you nominated for speedy delete a few days back. While I'm glad that the article was saved, I can sympathise with why you'd want it taken off. You were quite right to argue that the article is excessively prose-like, which is a weakness of my writing style. I would be grateful for any suggestions you have for improving the article (other than "delete it" of course).

Hey, thanks for applying to beta test =D I have a few things I have to finish before I can let anyone beta test it (mainly the the "request for speedy deletion" function) but I should have a working version tomorrow. The script only has two working features right now (Revert and Warn) so there isn't much to test out, but those two features alone can save quite a bit of time, and testing them can help save me having to go through the entire script when I have more features in.
As I said - I should have a working version you can install tomorrow (I'll drop you a message with the install script). But until then - I need to know what internet browser you use, and what version. - Dinnerbone (Talk/Cont) 23:32, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As of right now I use Internet Explorer but Im seriously considering switching to Mozilla Firefox very soon. I figure the Internet Explorer might cause some problems; I also have an AOL Explorer Browser, which came with AIM Triton, but I dont use it much. Oh, I dont know exactly what version of Internet Explorer I have; I bought this laptop with Windows XP, im not sure if that can help you or not to figure what version i have.Xlegiofalco 23:47, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, Internet Explorer - I think that some of my code is incompatible with Internet Explorer 6 (I have removed it from my computer so I can't find out myself). To find out your version I think you go to Help -> About Internet Explorer (it's usually the same for most programs). AOL explorer is basically Internet Explorer but with a few modifications, so that won't work if IE doesn't work. - Dinnerbone (Talk/Cont) 23:59, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Box installation[edit]

I have finished my edits to vandal box, and it should now be safe for people to beta test it. Since you applied to beta test it I can now give you the code required to install the script.

Please report any bugs or glitches to me using my talk page, along with what you were doing when the glitch/bug happened, a description of the bug, the browser you used and any other details you may find helpful.

Vandal Box Beta Test Synopsis[edit]

K, so after i copied and pasted the vandal box template into my monobook, everything at first started to look weird when i went to Show Preview. This was Yesterday (Thursday the 16) and at the time i was a little busy with english homework. SO i thought i would deal with it the next day, and to my surpise, it didnt look as bad as it did before. Before, there was the text of the code in the upper left hand corner. But now when i go to a pages history, next to a user's edit theres an "r" and a "w", and i took a screenshot of how it looks like in IE if you'd like. When i did find a vandal, i tried to use warn, but it took me here-User:Dinnerbone/Vandal box/vbox. I dunno what to do from here. I havent tried the "revert" function yet, ill need to find a vandalized page, but im pressed for time with projects in school. Ill check it on Sunday; its all very cool.

May i suggest on the warning templates to sorta cite what was the considered vandalized text (or deletion) and in the warning link to the corresponding wikipolicy of why its vandalism? K, lemme know how i may help you some more. Xlegiofalco 05:45, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you warn someone, it will take you to User:Dinnerbone/Vandal box/vbox and show a list of warning templates you can use on the user - you just click the name of the template and it will warn the person. If it doesn't show you a list of warning templates then I guess it doesn't work in IE.
The list of warning templates can be altered by you if you want to add or remove a template to use - see User talk:Dinnerbone/Vandal box/install for instructions on how to do this.
The default templates that are used in the script are: test, test2, test2b, test3, test4, blatant vandal and test4im.

I tested the revert feature on Veterans Day (all of my tests so far on Internet Explorer). It was really easy to revert the page back after the vandal removed most of the content. So far, VB works on Internet Explorer; I havent tried the warn feature yet. Is it futile to warn ISP addresses, or should i warn users only? It seems to me that the majority of vandalism comes from ISP addresses (to be honest, I have a tendency to review a page in my watchlist if it has been edited by a ISP address moreso than a user). In my opinion, most users who bother to get an userprofile tend to have good intentions. Of course there are those who try to vandalize using userprofiles but they fall into a very small percentage. Anyways, Ill go ahead to try to put the script on the Mozilla, see if that works any differently with what ive tested already. Xlegiofalco 04:16, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Warn doesn't work in IE - I tried it with my other computer running IE and it can't grab the vandals username to warn them (You may of noticed when you reverted it said "by Unknown" because it couldn't get the username). The warn function works on both users and IP addresses, theres no reason why it shouldn't (IP addresses use User:123.456.78.90 like normal people use User:Username).
I will try my hardest later to get this script to work in IE, but IE doesn't handle javascript objects like firefox so it will be tricky. For now use the script in Mozilla Firefox to get all of it's features. By the way - I have just updated the script with a BETA version, clear your cache to use this version. The Pulse (WP:MED newsletter) June 2014[edit]

The first edition of The Pulse has been released. The Pulse will be a regular newsletter documenting the goings-on at WPMED, including ongoing collaborations, discussions, articles, and each edition will have a special focus. That newsletter is here.

The newsletter has been sent to the talk pages of WP:MED members bearing the {{User WPMed}} template. To opt-out, please leave a message here or simply remove your name from the mailing list. This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

What's happening?

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.

Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

  • Swedish
    Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
    Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
  • Dutch
    Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
  • Polish
    Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.

  • Arabic
    The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.
