I intially tried this method, but rejected it because there are just too many cases where you have to use different markup in the Renders as column, as noted in the {{markup}} documentation. And there are many instances where I have used the {{code}} template to expose the HTML output of a template, which is handy.

Yeah. There are plenty of times where this approach doesn't work, as indicated by the examples of it not working that I have given. Given that, I am not sure how useful this template is. I basically did it as an experiment. I thought I would stick it out there and see what people made of it.
Although I think this template could be improved with some better Lua programming, I think there is always going to be the problem that templates are parsed before being passed to Lua...
...Unless.... you could force the user to put the input in <nowiki> tags and then strip those tags for the right hand side. I'm guessing you'd have to do a lot more than that though to then make it parse the template on the right.
