Link rot

I address my opinions about Link Rot in user page. To summarize, even though these were not my edits, this is an important article to me, one I will be contributing to heavily in the next few weeks. Please do not deface the look of the article or the credibility of wikipedia by putting a tag on the face of the article. If you have a problem with urls that do not have the complicated wikiformatting, then fix the problem. Do not do a drive by tag. To me the equates with vandalism. There is RefFill. Push the button yourself. I'm not going to do it because I don't think there is a problem. You are (in the minority I suspect) the one who has the problem, who sees it as a problem. This article is going to get a lot of traffic in the ensuing weeks and it doesn't need your spraypaint on it. Trackinfo (talk) 05:53, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Hello Trackinfo; it is very uncivil of you to call me a vandal for clean-up tagging and I am quite offended. Now you may not know this but CAT:ROT (the corresponding cat for the tag) is a very-well maintained clean-up cat and the the issue would of be fixed quickly. I'm not extremely confident with all of WP yet so I tagged because I knew a fellow editor would come through and fix it within 24 hours. If they didn't I would of attempted to fix it myself. You do not WP:OWN the article; "this is an important article to me, one I will be contributing to heavily in the next few weeks." sounds like you think you own it. I have fixed the linkrot for you now. Please read WP:LINKROT for information on why linkrot is a problem and please remember to be WP:CIVIL with editors that aren't as knowledgeable as you. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 06:02, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I may have come off as abrasive, I have run across too many feckless serial taggers here. It is nice to see a positive change. Simply put, when you see a problem, fix it rather than to publicly complain about other people's work. I see you working on Australian athletics articles. Since I occasionally do work on both sides of the Tasman, from a distance I pay attention to what is going on there. I also direct a professional wrestling TV show. I look forward to working with to you make wikipedia better. Trackinfo (talk) 08:41, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Trackinfo: After re-reading my above comment I was a bit uncivil as well so sorry about that. Yes I enjoy athletics, and I am currently trying to get a couple of the Australian Olympians to DYK which is fun. I too look forward to working with you in the future. Thanks, - Yellow Dingo (talk) 08:47, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi Yellow Dingo. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Widr (talk) 11:30, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

CSD tagging

Hi Yellow Dingo. Please take a look at WP:CSD. This is not a valid reason to speedily delete something, please remember that in the future. Omni Flames (talk) 12:10, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

@Omni Flames: It is almost exactly the same as the previously deleted article. I was applying WP:IAR. Obviously if the same thing was deleted 20 minutes ago it will be deleted again for the same reason. Any admin would see that rationale and check the similarities between the current and old version and delete and possibly SALT as well. I think you removing the tag is just making more work for others. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 12:13, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
No, that's not how things work. That only applies to pages which where deleted via XFD. The fact that it's identical to a deleted page (assuming the page was speedily deleted) means nothing. If one of the CSD criteria applied to the deleted page, why don't you just tag the new page with the same criteria, because apparently they're exactly the same? Omni Flames (talk) 12:16, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
@Omni Flames: As I said I was applying WP:IAR. I will tag it as the old rationale again but your point is just against WP:COMMONSENSE. It is making an inevitable process more drawn out then it needs to be. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 12:20, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
You can't just expand the CSD criteria to get rid of an article you don't like, IAR or not. The process is called "speedy deletion" for a reason; it's meant for articles that fit a very specific set of criteria. When it doesn't fit the criteria, it shouldn't be used, and a different process should be utilized (PROD, AFD etc.). Even if it does fit the criteria, you still need to state why it does. The purpose of IAR is to stop Wikipedia from turning into a bureaucracy, it's not meant for you to do whatever you want, even if against policy. Omni Flames (talk) 12:34, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
@Omni Flames: I hear you. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 12:35, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Men's 10000

You tagged my work. What do you dispute? What do you think is an opinion? Trackinfo (talk) 09:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

@Trackinfo: There is a lot of things that are problamatic:
  • For example: "Kenyans Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor and Bedan Karoki Muchiri thought they had the answer" (what is your source that this is a fact; it also reads like a news report; disputable as how do we know they thought they had an answer)
  • "Tanui's awkward running form " - Unicted, could be considered a BLP violation by some
  • Statements that aren't common knowledge need cites; "After 7000 meters, Kipsang and Karoki took their last turns at the front and began to fade off the pace while Demelash took the point as the pace quickened." , "From the two alley waterfall start, Tanui went to the front of the pack, surrounded by his Kenyan teammates." , "having beaten Farah at the 2016 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships five months earlier." , "On the seventh lap, Farah casually moved up to mark the leaders." , "His training partner Galen Rupp moved in behind him, a formation they probably do every day in practice." , "Suddenly Farah's back kick connected with Rupp's right knee and Farah was on the ground. The pack behind him scattered and Farah popped up quickly, his shoulder showing the scrapes of his collision with the ground. Farah returned to his marking position, usually fourth place behind the Kenyans with occasional surges by Ethiopians Tamirat Tola and Yigrem Demelash." - There a lot more statements that need cites but is pointless to list them all. All these statements need references per WP:VERIFIABILITY.

I'm not quite sure how you, as a highly experienced Wikipedian, think that this is the sort of writing with put in our encyclopaedia. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 10:15, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

A great deal of the specifics you are citing, relative to position, is clearly documented in my originally cited source . . . the individual 100 meter splits of the race. I see subsequently that another editor has added supporting sources that match my analysis and even embellished a few points I missed. He didn't remove the points you contest. I have the American television coverage of the event as an additional primary source, which is a little more difficult to cite specific quotes from, however, Kamworor and Karoki Munchiri have had similar analysis about their alternating lead strategy here or here. As far as Rupp and Farah training together, that has been a well established fact since the last Olympics when they went 1-2. Here's an article with a picture showing them in the same position as the collision, taken two years ago. The closest thing to an original opinion is my comment on Tanui's sprinting form. I have yet to find someone else commenting in that much detail, but it was clear from the jerking and uneven arm carry that sprinting was not his forte and that is why he lost in the last 100 meters. Usually, this kind of detailed analysis takes a month or two to get published but I have a pretty good history of picking up on points others later embellish.

The bottom line here is I have been writing these analysis segments post major championship races since 2011 and between championships have been adding them to historical races going back long before I was alive. While these are hopefully getting better, there is nothing out of line or unencyclopedic about the hundreds of similar pieces I have written. This is here to bring life and perspective to the significance of these events. Beyond the pure statistics of a statistically based sport, there is a lot more that most of the general public does not know. An encyclopedia is here to inform people about a subject by summarizing the key points. Trackinfo (talk) 17:35, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

@Trackinfo: I see what you're getting at but remember just because sources exist doesn't mean you can use them without citing in the article. Also just because it may seem a common known fact to you, it doesn't mean it is a common fact for people not interested in the sport. Also, Your bit about Tanui sounds a lot like WP:ORIGINALRESEARCH. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 05:33, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
True. My mission here is to make more information to become common knowledge. The more I can communicate the nuances in the sport, the more fans will come to appreciate it and hopefully become more enthusiastic about it. There is a fine line between the analysis I derive from watching the event in the relative immediacy of the day of the event. I've watched as my work is repeated by the press around the world since most sports reporters have the same lack of knowledge. So it takes time for observations to filter through the professional track writers circuit. Did my observations spark the conversation or was it echoed by other professionals making the same observation? I can't answer that and there are so many variables, I don't think anyone could. But the point is, they usually do show up in sources, or another editor with a differing opinion has the gumption to remove them. Like every other article, these things improve over time with better sources and more information. On the short notice, I do these as well researched as possible, deriving information from as many sources as are immediately available, primarily video and result reports, most spot news reporting just reports the obvious.
