sr.wiki

Thank you very much for noting that picture used on sr.wiki for Tel Aviv actually wasn't a picture of Tel Aviv. I don't know how that mistake got through. Re: sources

I agree with you. My method is to translate articles from Hebrew Wikipedia as an "opening bid." I would add a template saying "This article was translated from Hebrew Wikipedia but I always forget to make one. (For comparison, see {{Finnish}}:

Quick question

I'm not canvaasing - just asking a legimitmate question. Do you considering the Anti-Defamation League to be pro-Israel? I mean, in articles, do you believe every mention of ADL should begin with "Pro-Israel organization ADL...". User:Kasaalan continues to copy and paste select-quotes from the cite demonstrating the organizations opinion of Israel. But I told him ADL has also advocated on behalf of muslims, gays, Christians, Arabs, etc...etc... While Jews are obviously a focus to say the organization is exclusively pro-Israel is false, correct? He keeps warring the inclusion in and I can't afford to get caught up in it. I figured you are more familiar with these types of isses, so can you weigh in (just about ADL being a pro-Israel org.) I think user is trying to defame the people by over-stating their Jewishness in a pejorative manner. I've spent quite some time in talk trying to be reasonable but to no avail - here. First try not to talk behind my back. Second my edit is completely accurate. Third you are act like a POV party who is obsessed with Israel's defense in the first place. The WRMEA criticism is long and contains over half of the text already. However near the criticism came from Jewish parties as I categorised. You don't read the articles themselves and trying to accuse me. I already proved the case per talk page. If there is any business with me about WRMEA, come talk in discussion page. The problem with the image was that you'd tagged it as a nonfree Wikipedia screenshot: not sure why you did this, but as a result, it was automatically removed from your talk page because nonfree images aren't allowed on talk pages, and then it was deleted as orphaned because nonfree images must be used in an article. I brought it up at MCQ, where it was agreed that the image fits {{PD-textlogo}}; therefore, I'm restoring it. Please feel free to restore it to your talk page. Aharoni does cite BiSdot Pleshet, p. 95, 97. (3rd edition). The book is titled Zirat HaKrav, a collection of articles about battles. Aharoni and Kabha are both contributors. Israeli settlements

Hi, thanks for your message on the settlement pages. Responsive to your feedback I've included sources explicitly stating the two settlements in question are illegal. The ICJ decision was taken in 2004, which is after 1994 however I don't agree that this is entirely relevant, since something that was illegal in 1981 is still illegal in 1994 unless the situation somehow changes in the meantime. Internationally, if the UNSC states something is against the Geneva Convention, then that's considered to be the official line in the matter. Concerning the settlements in particular both the UNSC and ICJ (among others) have agreed on their illegality, which is why stating on these pages the settlements are illegal is completely non-controversial.

What is controversial is saying that they are "in Israel", and this should be reflected on the pages as well. Do you have ideas, how we should go about that? --Dailycare (talk) 21:21, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Regarding an image on the Hebrew Wikipedia.

Hi, found you browsing though the Hebrew babel category.

Was wondering if you could help get the image he:קובץ:Israel-peleg.jpg listed for deletion over at the Hebrew Wikipedia. I was eable to find some generic speedy deletion templates, but not knowing the language makes it rater hard for me to explain the issue clearly there. The image is listed as Creative Commons 2.5 there, but the same image was uploaded here (File:ישראל פלג.jpg) referencing OTRS:2009071610018913, wich according to User:Stifle is just a permission for use on Wikipedia itself[1], so the license tag on the Hebew Wikipedia is incorrect per the OTRS ticket submied by the uloader, so it shuld be deleted there as well. A third, lower resolution copy of the image is on Commons as File:Israel-Peleg.jpg, but that one is already flagged for deletion. --Sherool (talk) 21:44, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

This is absurd

It seems those who are interested in my mentorship are simply dictating the rights of any future punishment. User:Count Iblis doesn't even know me (the only thing he has done is followed me to a couple articles - BBC - I work on and revert my additions without summaries), and User:PelleSmith has maliciously edit-warred and been subject to a series of noticeboards and warring reports submitted by myself. User:Rd232 has gone through several tough content disputes, currently an on-going one at Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, and of course I'm the guilty one. I haven't even heard of User:Awickert and he seems he knows exactly what should be done to solve this elusive wikifan!. User:ChrisO has openly expressed his dislike for me several times, and several users at Israel and the apartheid analogy routinely accused him of stepping over the line and owning talk discussions. It's just distressing to see an obviously problematic user submit a POV-motivated ANI that has become, in my eyes, a kangaroo court where past users (some who I have only edited with to a very marginal extent) can be free to issue their dislikes without concern. Neither I nor you gave sources for our caracterisation of the 1948 war as a 'war of independence' (you) or a 'war of expulsion' (me). Nor did we do so for our claims that the Arabs fled (you) or that they were forced to flee (me). Are you prepared to source your claims? If not, I am willing to do so. There are plenty of reliable (in my opinion) sources to prove that it was as I stated.

You are not a resident and maybe do not have "your ear to the ground" as to who is who in Bat Yam. Obviously we differ as to what the term "notable resident" means. Iron Dome

Ynhockey, could you please assess my Iron Dome article? A Point-Of-View is not a Point-Of-View if ynhokey sez it's not

Re: viewing land beyond Gedera, its proximity is not with a "border". You act against basic facts that Israel only has a border with Egypt and Jordan, neither of which are within sight of Gedera. It is your POV, Jew hating at worst, to demand or otherwise act arrogantly against the facts and deny same by subverting the corrections, ironically claiming they are a Point-Of-View. As if phrases meant to deny history are not a Point-Of-View. With regard to your affinity with de-judaizing designations or phrases like "West Bank", I defy you to find the usage of the de-Judaizing designation prior to its invention in 1951 for the land illegal occupied by the exiled Hashemite tyrant from the Hejaz. You seem to have an aversion for the use of terms that lend themselves to history rather than Points-Of-View against Jews ever existing in the land of their own name. Why is it you threaten me with actions against a display of history rather than contrary evidence?

I noticed you changed the pronunciation for hataf kamatz on Wikipedia: Naming conventions (Hebrew) back to "a". I was under the impression that in Modern Hebrew it's always pronounced as /o/, e.g. /tsohorajim/ 'noon', /onija/ 'boat'. Mo-Al (talk) 02:03, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Palestinian villages

Hi. I used a source which I'd noticed Hulcha had used in a lot of her articles, some of which have appeared as a DYK. Therefore I assumed it was an accpetable source. However, if it is a site run by a Palestinian who is likely to exaggerate atrocities by Israeli's that sort of thing I don't want a conflict played out on wikipedia. If you can point me to a reliable source to expand all of the stubs I created yesterday please show me. If not, I will happily delete the stubs I created, which of course would stop the animosity. country

Hey Yn, what do you think about my idea to have an if statement for the country to hide the field if set to 0? Would make it so all the current ones that have Israel in the country dont need to be modified and ones that shouldnt would easily be corrected. nableezy - 19:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

If you think it doesnt need to say Israel for places that are in Israel then I have no problem just keeping the field removed, but it seems standard practice to include the country in city articles' infoboxes. The one thing I want to avoid is the infoboxes saying Israel as the country for localities outside of Israel. Just a thought, though I leave it up to you. Did not think about null being 0, but a "hide_country" field set to 1 would be the same thing in practice. nableezy - 20:09, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Ynhockey! The discussion at the Equador, Rio Grande de Norte RfD has gotten rather long (mostly my doing -- sorry) and much of it deals with the unrelated issue of moving the redirect's target or retargeting Equador. I hope that you'll read my reply to your "Delete" recommendation and reconsider. I do admit to being prejudiced in general against those redirects from misspellings that the search tool would easily catch itself, but I think that this is a special case which particularly merits deletion. Kfar Sava / Kafr Saba

I don't really agree with your edit. In my opinion, "See also" is for articles that are related. In my opinion, Kfar Sava and Kafr Saba are not related other than having similar names and geographical proximity. Because the two have similar names, I can certainly see somebody accidentally mistyping "Kfar Sava" instead of "Kafr Saba".

I understand your point, but don't think you are quite correct on either:
  • About being related—a similar name and geographic proximity is exactly what makes them related, similar to how Ashdod is related to Isdud even though they're not in the same location. The reason is that the Arab name was probably derived from the historical name, which is also related to modern Kfar Sava.
  • About typing the wrong thing—this is a fairly obscure topic. On a normal month, it got less than 200 views, probably most of which were made by the primary editor. I don't believe that many people will directly type the name (rather, they might access the article through links or Google), and those who will, will probably know how to spell it. Besides, see also does not mean that it's hidden—I personally go straight to "see also" sections in many articles where I'm looking for related stuff, and believe that others do the same.
Finally, I don't feel strongly about it either. It just didn't seem like a plausible typo to me.

Running simultaneous A-class and GA reviews

Hello Ynhockey!

First off: congratulations on Operation Pleshet achieving A-Class. Got your sights on FA next?

I have a question for you. I put an article of mine on WP:GAN#WAR. It wasn't long before I discovered the page suffers from an incredible degree of backlog. It was a surprise for me at first, but at a closer look I realised that there are some GANs that are over a month old. While I'm waiting, I'm considering running an A-class review. Two things discourage me however. First is that I tend to see A-class as being higher than GA, and that I should reach GA level before moving on to A-class. The second thing is that the MilHist Academy discourages running simultaneous GA and A-class reviews, and indeed I'm concerned that, while undergoing an A-class review, someone might open a GA review.

Well that was helpful somewhat. To be honest, I've already implemented three of your suggestions. I reviewed your article for that same purpose, and recently I started working on my next article. I've already done a peer review, and received complaints on prose. So I asked an experienced copy-editor to help me, but he's busy in real life and very slow in editing the article. Until those prose issues are cleared, an FA is unlikely
I was hoping to finish an FAC in time for a main page appearance on the article's anniversary (which is just over a month away). That's the reason behind my impatience, and that's why I'm considering dropping GA in favor of an A-class review. What do you think? Thanks. --Sherif9282 (talk) 00:42, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
IMO that's the other main problem with the article: a lack of sources... I suppose you're right about the background information as well.
The Yom Kippur War article was promoted around 3 years ago, which is why it now looks more like a GA.

administrative question

Hi there. I have an administrative question, and since I noticed that you're an admin (and Nableezy in a conversation with you implied that I would consider you "friendly"), I thought I'd ask it here.

Lets say you have User A, who's blocked from editing a certain topic, and User B who's a very active editor in that topic, almost a single purpose account. If User A was editing his own talk page to include stuff that should go into articles in the topic from which he is banned, and User B was taking things from this talk page and inserting them into articles and then striking them off User A's page, would that be considered a violation of the rules? Trying to circumvent a ban?

K or C for Carmit

Hi Ynhockey,

Just wondering why having the spelling of Carmit begin with a 'k' if, as I see from your earlier discussions on the Carmit page, the spelling of Carmit with a 'C' is more common?

IPA for Hebrew

Thank you for your comments on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Hebrew). Given the jumbled state of Hebrew transcription on Wikipedia, I'd like to ask you some questions about the use of IPA for linguistic articles on Hebrew before posting to Wikipedia_talk:IPA_for_Hebrew:

  • Should articles (e.g. [6]) use non-IPA transcription in any situation (other than in names, etc.)?
  • Is there any standard for transcription of varieties of Hebrew other than Modern Israeli?
  • Hebrew phonology often indicates /ħ, ʕ/, which many Israelis pronounce even though Wikipedia:IPA for Hebrew doesn't sanction their use. In my opinion they should be included in an article on modern Hebrew phonology, especially since merging them into /χ ʔ/ is simple for readers who want to extract the non-Oriental pronunciation, the other direction doesn't work. Does the standard need to be changed?
  • Similarly, Oriental Modern Hebrew contains some instances of /e/ and gemination, at least in careful speech, where non-Oriental Hebrew omits them. Should this be included in the standard? Also, I don't see an easy way to make it clear which /e/s are pronounced by all Israelis and which only occur in Oriental pronunciation.

Hello again

I have another question for you: As you may have noticed, in many cases of articles about places relating to the IP conflict, there is one article for the place until 1948, and another after 1948. A good example of this is Beit Guvrin and Bayt Jibrin. I think there needs to be a standard policy regarding if such articles should be merged or kept separate. Would you be interested in starting the ball rolling on this? I'd do it myself, but I'm really not sure where to start and am also a bit worried some wikilawyer will catch me making some sort of technical mistake and ruin the whole thing. Yan, thank you for the encouraging words the other day! I've been looking into Israeli architecture a lot lately and have a few pages I'm going to write in the next few months. What do you think of this[7] that I've started? I'm making a trip to the library on Monday for some offline sources, but should move it into article space before then once I have it shaped out comparably to the article on the Hebrew Wiki. Though I am drawn to modern architecture in many ways, many important institutions (such as this) often choose earlier buildings. Hi Yan! It's me again. I've seen some of your map making and it is quite good. Would you be interested in making a map I mentioned here: Talk:White City (Tel Aviv)#Map? One like this [8] that shows Zones A,B,&C of Tel Aviv's World Heritage Site but with labels for the English reader.
