Capital District Wikiproject[edit]

I would like to invite you to join the CD wikiproject, I truly enjoy reading your recent articles on the shopping centers around the region. Unless you want to do it yourself I'd like to add some of the relevant interesting info to History of Albany, New York and to the recreation section on Capital District. I see from your user page you are interested in history, there is a backlog on the articles needing attention subpage to the wikiproject and most of them are concerning historic sites if you want to take a look and see if you are interested in working on any of them. In case you havent had a chance to look at the wikiproject page there is a place to list new articles that you make so everyone can keep in touch on what is out there, a place to list new photos/pictures, and a place to request a photo to be taken of any place in the region you may need (and people are usually pretty quick on getting a photo, weather permitting, if the photo is imperative for making an article better). Wow, that Saratoga Mall article was very thorough and you made it really quick! I actually remember shopping there alot before the Wilton Mall was ever built and really enjoyed it, I continued to long after the "new mall" (as we called the Wilton Mall for a long time) was built, and was a loyal customer even up to the day it closed. You may want to mention the Carl's/Fayes was changed to an Eckards before the mall closed and was the very last remaining tenant (at least its the last one I remember being open prior to construction closing the area off) and then remained at the new open-air mall but in a newly built building, I havent been up there since Eckards was bought out by Rite Aid but I would assume Rite Aid kept the location. Also the Price Chopper isnt the only remaining part of the original mall area remaining, the HSBC (originally Marine Midland) bank remained too because it was in a separate out building, I think they simply painted it to match the newer buildings and maybe reconstructed the entrances to its parking lot.Camelbinky (talk) 05:39, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My guess on why the Wilton Mall was built right next to the Saratoga Mall is that the Saratoga Mall was owned by Pyramid right? Hence the name Pyramid Mall (original name right?) so I think the Wilton Mall built by a competing company. Same probably happened with Colonie Center and Northway Mall, even Crossgates is awfully close to Colonie Center given their sizes. I guess its a part of capitalism and the cut-throat competition inherit with it. A location with a Lowes might not have the ability to also support a Home Depot if it comes in, but sure enough a Home Depot will come in even if they'll both underperform until one goes out. Example would be the large GU grocery store format tried by Grand Union where Home Depot is today next to Westgate Plaza (for the life of me I cant remember what was in that plaza before GU rebuilt it, but it was a beautiful grocery store for the little time it existed), even though with a large Price Chopper at Westgates and a Hannaford across the street one could argue the area didnt need another grocery store. Nigros Company even builds whole shopping centers next to their own shopping centers and have them compete against each other just to keep others from building their own! Let me know if you ever start an article on the failed mall built in Cohoes for (or by) Cohoes Fashions, I've started a subsection of the history section at the Capital District article dealing with the rise of the suburbs and decline of the urban centers, your mall articles gave me an idea of having info about the several failed attempts at "urban malls" such as the Atrium in Troy, the Amsterdam Mall, and the mall in Cohoes. Unfortunately Cohoes Fashions simply redirects to Burlington Coat Factory and that article has absolutely no info on the Cohoes Fashion chain.Camelbinky (talk) 22:20, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Times Union article on Aviation Mall[edit]

Thought you might be interested in this article in the Times Union today on the plans for Aviation Mall be scaled back, there is also an article on Latham Circle Mall talking about how crummy it is but nothing much new in that article. This one is much more interesting. Southgate Mall?[edit]

Do you know anything about a proposed mall (obviously never built) in Bethlehem south of Albany, perhaps where the recent rash of strip malls has been built along Route 9W. Possibly was going to be named Southgate Mall (perhaps as a play on Crossgates?), and if that is true that leads me to believe it was proposed by Pyramid. Possibly abandoned when Pyramid decided to expand Crossgates to its current size (was that 1994?), which also leads me to believe it was proposed by Pyramid. I'm off to check the Times Union archives. I'm hoping you have more info on hand than my speculations and hearsay second hand knowledge. Or if you've never heard of this and it ends up being real info then hey I've helped you out by finding new info for you to repay you for all the new stuff I've learned from your articles.Camelbinky (talk) 05:40, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I did an archive search at the Times Union website, found two articles on the Southgate Commons Shopping Center. Apparently was proposed for US 9W basically where all the big box shopping centers have been built in the last 5 years. Was an open-air power center about half the sq. footage of rentable space of Crossgates. Wouldve had a Super Kmart with a full grocery department (would have been the first and only one in the Capital District that I know of). Was interesting and could be useful to you if you ever do an article on the shopping centers that finally were built in that location, I'm sure there must be more info on why Southgate failed but then the other one was finally built.Camelbinky (talk) 08:28, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Even if it is sourced, please don't add lists of current/former tenants to mall articles as you did to Mohawk Mall. Store listings comprise indiscriminate information and such lists could never be complete. Don't be let down. The rest of your stuff is great. That's pretty much the only thing that was wrong with your entire edits, was the store list. I think it would be better, though, if you just reduced it to the more notable stores (anchors, prominent outparcels, stores that had a long run within the mall, etc.; for instance, Green Tree Mall had the first Texas Roadhouse restaurant). Or you could say something like, "In the 1970s, the mall had several chain tenants such as blah, blah, and blah, as well as local tenants that included blah, blah and blah."
