Blade steels[edit]

Titanium is used in the making of blades sometimes, with a carbide edge bonded to it. I've had both types and still have a few bonded edge blades. As for the other content, it is very good information. However, you cannot copy someone else's material word for word. If Larrin did give you permission to use it, there may be a way to get approval, but I think it's better to rewrite it if you can. Can you rewrite it in your own words, summary style? I can help you out if you need it. If that information is found elsewhere on the site other than a Forum post, that is good. It would be preferable to get the same information from a print source: book, knife magazine article, etc. Yes, I know a lot of very knowledgeable makers and smiths post good information on the forums, but wiki has a strict policy against using forum posts for verification. see:WP:RS. As for Tool steel, when you write the LEAD or lede, you are supposed to summarize what is down below. Tool steel is mentioned in the body of the article moreso than the non-steels; therefore it rates mentioning.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 22:54, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have Larrin's written permission. Although, honestly I am not aware of any procedure on wiki for standard approvals. Larrin's input will be on zknives.com shortly. As for the books, I'm not aware of any related to this specific subject.

As for the tool steels and categories in general, it better be broken down into several sections: Alloy Steels, Carbon Steels, Stainless Steels, Tool Steels which is more common steel grouping on the metallurgy related web sites.

Very cool, that's a great site, sounds like you and I have a lot of shared interests, take a look at the Desert Eagle piece if you get a chance, it needs more input too! ~~I knew of someone who did the written thing through OTRS, I believe, it was a while back, I'll see if I can find it.~~ I've done it for pictures, but not anything written. Honestly, I know you could rewrite that in your own words and give proper attribution, you're a good writer. There are books on this stuff, I even have a few here. I like your take on arranging the steels, too. Alloy, Carbon, Stainless, Tool, then non-ferrous maybe? Thanks. I've seen DEP page, and actually I host DEP FAQ on zvis.com. As for the rewriting, if I simply rehash Larrin's words wouldn't that be real plagiarism on my part? I'll try to work with him on that. I figure I'll host his definitions on zknives.com and cite him on definitions. Meanwhile, if you have suggestion on rewriting definition, at least format, e.g. simple/in depth etc.. that'd be great. Also, how does one join cutlery project here?

Not exactly, if you summarize what he says and attribute it to him, it's cool. Readers should be able to read what you have here and then go to the source in question to read it in more detail if you wish. Mike, I've updated the article with revised terms and Larrin's original data is located on zknives.com, in steel terms glossary. Citations point to that page. Question for you. First thing you edited yesterday was to remove bold tags from the terms. I think the terms need to stand out somehow. What's the correct way of doing so in wiki? I think you're on to something, I was looking at writing this as an article in paragraph style as opposed to a list. I think it will work better as a list. Check out:SAE steel grades or List of Telecaster players. Let me know what you think, it's probably easier to keep this in short structure within a table. see the talk page on that article, too. Ok, converted to the list. Better that before. Another question. I'd like to link each steel to corresponding entry in the interactive chart with complete composition and all the available names. Due to the amount of material it's not realistic to copy all that info to the article. So, one way is to link steel name to individual file, like it's done for CPM M4, CPM 10V and 5160. But that's external link which as I understand is not desirable? Alternatively I can put reference to http://zknives.com/knives/steels/steelchart.php which has the same info, all together.
