Vadim Olehovich Sukharevskyi is a colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the first commander of Unmanned Systems Forces in the world.[3] The first officer of the Armed Forces under whose command fire was opened to defeat Russian militants.[4][5] In 2022 he was awarded Hero of Ukraine.
Before becoming Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces he was: Commander of the 59th Motorized Infantry Brigade (2022-2024), Chief of Staff of the 35th Marine Brigade, and Commander of the 503rd Marine Infantry Battalion.[6]
In October 2022, he was listed as one of the 25 most influential Ukrainian military men from the Ministry of Defense.[7]
He was born on October 6, 1984 in Berehove Zakarpattia Oblast.[2]He graduated from the Mukachevo Lyceum with enhanced military and physical training .
From February to October 2004, as part of the 6th separate mechanized brigade, he was in the Peacekeeping Mission in Iraq. He took part in the Battle of Al Kut.
In 2009 he graduated from the Lviv Institute of Ground Forces of the Lviv Polytechnic, majoring in "Combat application and control of actions of airmobile units". [2]
In 2011 — senior lieutenant, commander of the airmobile company of the 80th separate airmobile regiment. The commander of the regiment, Viktor Kopachynskyi, noted Sukharevskyi as one of the two best commanders of the regiment's companies.[8]
Russian-Ukrainian war
[edit]On April 13, 2014, he took part in the first battle of the war in Donbas near Semenivka as part of the SBU special unit "Alfa".[1][9] Senior Lieutenant Sukharevskiy, contrary to the order "not to open fire", opened fire from his armored personnel carrier on Russian fighters under the leadership of Igor Girkin.[10]
On August 16, 2014 he was wounded in battles near Krasny.[11]
From 2014 to 2016 he studied at the National Defense University of Ukraine named after Chernyakhovsky.
Since 2016 — commander of the 1st line battalion of the 36th marine brigade. Performed tasks in the Mariupol direction.[12]
In June 2020 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.[13]
From 2021 he was chief of staff of the 35th separate marine brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrogradskyi .
From February 2022 [citation needed] — commander of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Yakov Handziuk.[14]
On June 18 2022, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, at that time he held the rank of colonel.[15][16]
February 9 2024 — headed the newly created Forces of Unmanned Systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[17]
On February 10, 2024, he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.[18]
On June 10 2024, Sukharevskyi was appointed commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umyerov.[19]
