Verwurelter

Verwurelter made for Fuesent.

Verwurelter[1] or verwurrelter,[2] also known as fueskichelcher,[3] are traditional Luxembourg deep-fried pastry knots. They are most commonly served during the Fuesent carnival season in Luxembourg.[1][2][4][5]

Composition[edit]

Verwurelter dough is made from mixing warm milk, yeast, sugar, and flour together.[1] Often the dough is left to rise before eggs, butter, salt, and the remaining sugar is mixed to create a smooth, malleable dough. The dough is then portioned into slices that are twisted into knots before deep-frying.[6] When cooled, Verwurelter are dusted with powdered sugar or granulated sugar.[1][6]

Availability[edit]

Fuesent, also known as Fuesecht, is a carnival season similar to Fasching that runs from the beginning of February and continues in some areas through the end of March.[1][2][7] It begins the day after the traditional celebration of Liichtmëssdaag, during which children, singing and carrying lanterns, go from door to door to get treats and money.[7][8][9]

Fuesent includes parades known as "cavalcades"; the first cavalcades were in Diekirch in 1870.[7]
