She made her screen debut with a brief role in the Hindi film Jab We Met (2007). She had success as the leading lady in the Punjabi romances Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 (2013), Ishq Brandy (2014), Godha (2017), Nikka Zaildar 2 (2017), Parahuna (2018), and Nikka Zaildar 3 (2019). Gabbi has since starred in the Hindi series Modern Love: Mumbai (2022), Jubilee (2023), and Charlie Chopra & The Mystery Of Solang Valley (2023), and film Khufiya (2023).
Early life and education
[edit]Gabbi was born in a Punjabi family in Chandigarh on 29 September 1993.[1][2][3] Her father Govardhan Gabbi is an author and writes in Hindi and Punjabi languages, who uses Gabbi as a pseudonym.[4][5]
Gabbi did her schooling at St. Xavier's School, Chandigarh. She then completed her degree in Arts from DAV College, Chandigarh.[6]
Career
[edit]Gabbi made her film debut in a brief role at thirteen with Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met (2007), as the character of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s cousin.[7] She admitted to feeling doubtful about her future in the film industry while on set for the film as she did not come from an acting family like Kapoor Khan.[7] Following a series of supporting roles in several films, Gabbi had her first lead role as Tanisha, a teenager who engages in a relationship with a man twice her age in the coming-of-age drama, Sixteen (2013).[8] In a review for Mumbai Mirror, Karan Anshuman commended Gabbi as "the standout" in a mediocre film.[9] The film emerged as a commercial failure.[10]
Gabbi next made her debut into Punjabi cinema alongside Amrinder Gill and Yo Yo Honey Singh in the comedy film Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22.[11] The film was a commercial success.[12] Her roles in the Punjabi films Ishq Brandy and Ishq Haazir Hai (2015) generally went unnoticed. In Bhale Manchi Roju, Gabbi made her debut into Telugu cinema opposite Sudheer Babu as a woman abducted on her wedding day.[13] Despite its shoestring budget, the film was a box-office success.[14] In 2016, Gabbi expanded to Tamil cinema with the romantic drama Maalai Naerathu Mayakkam opposite Balakrishna Kola. She was drawn to the role as it was a departure from the "chirpy" roles she had portrayed in her Punjabi films.[15] In a negative review, a critic for The New Indian Express labelled Gabbi "a talent to watch out for" but lamented the film's regressive themes.[16]
In 2017, Gabbi debuted into Malayalam cinema with the sports comedy Godha, alongside Tovino Thomas.[17] To prepare for her role as a Punjabi wrestler, she learnt the sport in Amritsar, Punjab and lived with her coach for several weeks.[18] In the film's climactic scene, Gabbi sustained physical injuries throughout her entire body.[18] Her performance received positive feedback critically with Firstpost's Anna MM Vetticad describing her as "luminous" and commending her accurate portrayal of a professional wrestler's body language.[19] Additionally, The Times of India's Deepa Soman found that she overshadowed the performance of Thomas.[20]
Wamiqa signed onto a new Tamil film, Iravaakaalam, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, also starring Sshivada and S. J. Surya.[21] Wamiqa played the lead role in 9, also starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mamta Mohandas.[22] Wamiqa starred as the female lead opposite Ishaan Khattar in the short film, Fursat, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, which released in early 2023.[23] She was cast in Bharadwaj's Khufiya, which was released in October the same year on Netflix.[24] She also played Niloufer in the Amazon original series, Jubilee, which also released in April 2023.[25]
