"What You Wanted" is a song by American rock band OneRepublic. The song serves as the second promotional single and fourth track from the band's third studio album Native after "Feel Again". It was released February 19, 2013 and available to download on iTunes in the month leading up to the album's release on available listings of the album.[1] The song was also featured on the trailer for the 2014 film adaptation of John Green's novel, The Fault In Our Stars.[2]

Background and composition[edit]

"What You Wanted" was written and produced by band members Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle with additional production from Andy Prickett. The song was first teased on the band's website in a promotional offer for a signed copy of Native. It was the first written for Native and started with Kutzle and Tedder on a synthesizer, drum machine, and the lyrical melody of the chorus. It is one of Tedder's favourite tracks on the album and credits the song with paving the way for the rest of the album..[3] The song's lyrics describe a person being willing to do anything to show their devotion for their lover.
