Wikipedia:2014 main page redesign proposal/draft/JamesDouch

Written explanation[edit]

The design is shown as an image because I created it in an application, rather than using wiki markup. FLs, if present, would go as a box above the Other areas of Wikipedia section.

Major changes:

  • Portals, ITN, OTD, and DYK have been included in Other areas of Wikipedia — I think they do not need to occupy so much of the main page. I have no problem with DYK itself, but it seems odd to me that what is in basic terms a list of random stuff, would be on such a prominent page as the main page. This change also allows the featured items to be next to each other, rather than having the FA separate from the FL and FP. I understand that of all changes in this proposal, this one is likely to be the most objectionable.
  • Use of emerging WMF projects/languages section at bottom — They're more modern in appearance, and is a step towards greater consistency between the many projects and languages.
  • Modified box design and coloured them blue — The boxes are consistent with those of Commons and are needed update of the 2006 design. The blue was chosen from the WMF colour palette.
