Wikipedia:Administrative service awards
![]() | This page in a nutshell: Some administrators choose to acknowledge their service to Wikipedia by displaying a service award which denotes time served and number of administrative actions made. These awards are unofficial – displaying the wrong one carries no penalty (except possible disapproval from other administrators), and displaying the right one does not indicate authority or competence. |

Administrative service awards are for admins what our service awards are for Wikipedians, generally; that is, a gamification mechanism to reward the self instead of getting recognition from others.[1] These awards focus specifically on administrative actions using "the tools" as compared to mere edits done while an elected admin.
Please remember that neither the number of administrative actions nor the length of time from when "awarded the mop" is a good indicator of the quality of an administrator's actions or diplomatic ability. Hence, these service awards do not indicate any level of authority whatsoever; "master" administrators are not bestowed with more authority through this award than "novice" administrators.
Award levels
[edit]Overview
[edit]There are currently 20 award levels.
For the sake of variety, three badge variants will someday be provided for each level: a medal, a mop, and a ribbon (thanks to Wikipedia:Ribbons). Administrators may display the badge of their preference, a combination of badges, or none at all.
To learn your administrative action count, see User:JamesR/AdminStats.
Requirements
[edit]The following table lists the requirements for each award level. Both lengths of time and the total number of actions must be met for each award level.
Exposition on the requirements
[edit]Rationale for the requirements
[edit]The administrative action count requirements for the levels are based on what, in the opinion of the administrators who formulated the requirements, could be achieved by a human administrator working with considerable regularity and diligence using the default tools and a fairly typical administrative action pattern. The awards for the first two years require a considerably lower administrative action rate than those for the later years.
Bots and administrators using certain tools or administrative action patterns may achieve higher rates, while administrators using certain administrative action patterns (such as mainly posting completed articles with a single action and so forth) may have lower rates, and of course administrators who don't perform actions regularly may have lower rates.
Thus not all administrators will see a good match between service time and administrative action counts (some administrators may be eligible for a high level by service time but not by administrative action count, while other administrators may be eligible for a high level by administrative action count, but not by service time). This is an imperfection which is an inherent consequence of the decision to use an uncomplicated system for determining eligibility for each award.
Images, userboxes, and top icons
[edit]You can place the {{Admin service awards}} template on your user page to show the image, userbox, or top icon most appropriate for your time of service and count of administrative actions. You must include |year=
, |month=
, and |day=
parameters specifying the date you passed RFA, as well as your count of administrative actions performed using the |actions=
parameter, and update these each time your edits pass one of the service award levels. The |format=
parameter can be used to specify the display format. See the template's documentation for details.
You can also choose to simply display an award from the following table:
