Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/SkylinBot

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I encourage potential approvers to please read through the bot page and the research paper it is referencing. I have added a small amount of info to explain my user situation as well. Long story short, I am a long time contributor who has historically done contributions anonymously. I would be continuing to do so if not for my desire to build the bot, based on my personal positions on privacy.

However, out of respect for the Wikipedia bot policy, I created this account to go through this process.

Do you know what IP it was? Soxred93 has a boring sig 04:45, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Various IPs. Lots of it would have been from behind a corporate proxy, and I always have a dynamic IP at home, so it cycles pretty regularly.

Then we have no user history to look at. Redenied. Denied. Soxred93 has a boring sig 04:49, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here's my basic question: Why are you considering the bot request as a function of user history, rather than as a function of the described functionality? That seems backwards.

Really because we don't want a user who might be a vandal to run a bot, because that is potentilal for danger. I am almost certain you are not one of those people, but we cannot take a chance. Soxred93 has a boring sig 05:08, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
May I add that we also would like to see some experience with Wikipedia from bot operators because novices tend to make accidental mistakes, and mistakes made with bots could be particulary severe. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 09:54, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
