Gender norming

I'd like to create an article on Gender norming, the practice whereby standards for female recruits, trainees and students are lowered in comparison for those for males (in the military, chiefly). Since there is controversy about whether this is a good idea, I thought we ought to have an article about what the idea *is*, and what effects it has been shown (or claimed) to have. Does it lower military effectiveness, boost female careers, or what?

Close analysis on a passage in Frankenstein

“She died calmly, and her countenance expressed affection even in death. I need not describe the feelings of those whose dearest ties are rent by that most irreparable evil, the void that presents itself to the soul, and the despair that is exhibited on the countenance. It is so long before the mind can persuade itself that she whom we saw every day and whose very existence appeared a part of our own can have departed forever — that the brightness of a beloved eye can have been extinguished and the sound of a voice so familiar and dear to the ear can be hushed, never more to be heard. These are the reflections of the first days; but when the lapse of time proves the reality of the evil, then the actual bitterness of grief commences. Yet from whom has not that rude hand rent away some dear connection? And why should I describe a sorrow which all have felt, and must feel? The time at length arrives when grief is rather an indulgence than a necessity; and the smile that plays upon the lips, although it may be deemed a sacrilege, is not banished. My mother was dead, but we had still duties which we ought to perform; we must continue our course with the rest and learn to think ourselves fortunate whilst one remains whom the spoiler has not seized.”(Frankenstein page 45)

Frankenstein and his mother seemed to have a very close bond, but I was disappointed to see that he did not really mourn his mother. Perhaps he did, but Shelly generalized it too much. Was he not able to feel real emotions? He was raised in a household where there was love and nurture throughout his childhood. So why couldn’t he express more of his feelings? He describes his loss of his mother through his facial features and that there always will be emptiness in his heart or soul which his mother had filled before. I guess he also does not understand at first what it really meant when he first heard the news of her being gone. I think it is hard for anyone who lost a loved one to get used to the fact that you won’t ever talk to them again, or see their smile, or hear their laughter. He also says that after some time passes, it is then that you realize and understand that you lost a loved one. I agree with that. At first you are more in a shock stage and after a while you figure out what it really means to have lost someone. But why didn’t Shelly go anymore into depth with his emotions?

His mother passing seemed to be a big part of this story; it is when he first learned about death for himself. She even asks that question herself. Why she should describe the sorrow he felt when everybody goes through that one time or another. Yes, everybody has to experience death in their lifetime. There is no going around that, but there are some people who deal with it better than others. And I think, because of later events in the story, Shelly should have gone more into depth of what he felt, or did not feel for that matter. Was it his mother’s death that drove him to explore the science of death? Should he have stopped when he first succeeded bringing dead things back to life? Was he hoping to bring his mother back from the dead? He left right after her death to college. 

When the author writes that grief become more of an indulgence than a necessity, my understanding was that she is saying that after a while if you still mourned over someone you lost, you do it more for yourself then that it is necessary. I believe grief is very important for as long as you need to do it. If you keep hurtful feelings bottled up inside you, it can drive you insane. Maybe that is what happened with him. He kept all his grief bottled up inside, and that is why he could not see that what he was doing was wrong when he created the monster. Yes, life has to go on, and yes, you have to start laughing again even though it might be perceived as wrong, as seen from outsiders. But as the author said, we must continue our course, because life goes on. I agree with her, when she is saying that we have to be thankful that we are still alive and are not the one that is dead. I still think that Shelly should have gone more into his reaction when he learned of his mother’s death versus generalizing as what everyone else experiences during the grieving process. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.163.187.77 (talk) 03:35, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Comment: What you have supplied here is too promotional to use as an encyclopedia article. The tone has to be factual, rather than encouraging children to enrole. Also primary schools usually do not get articles here unless there is something else special about them. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:08, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Bell's Brae Primary School

Bell's Brae Primary School is a school, in Lerwick, belonging to the SIC, which is over 50 years old. The current headmistress is Mrs Jennifer Wadley. It ranges, in age from 5-13 years old for students. It's pupils usually go to the Anderson High School.

• Primary school articles are often not kept. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#Education talks about this likelihood. So you will have to find and write more about this school that indicates it has a special reason to be in the encyclopedia.
