About the event[edit]

Groam House Museum is partnering with Museums Galleries Scotland and Wikimedia UK to bring their collection to a wider audience. These training sessions and |editathons are part of a programme of work being put together by Groam and MGS to embed open knowledge into the museum's working practices and open the collection to the world.

By showing staff and volunteers how to edit Wikipedia and upload photos to Wikimedia Commons, giving the store of knowledge held by the museum will be available to many more people than ever before.

This first workshop is aimed at those more comfortable with digital tools.

How do I prepare?
  • Create a Wikipedia account
  • Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided) - Editing can, at a push, be done on a tablet but it is MUCH easier on a laptop.
  • Learn about editing if you like - we'll be using the Visual Editor.
  • Think about what you would like to edit about - you can even prepare some materials to bring with you on the day. We will be providing some secondary sources, but if you have any, please do bring them!

Notability & sourcing[edit]

All articles on Wikipedia must meet the standards of notability. You should also pay particular attention to Wikipedia's guidelines around reliable sources. Wiki is a tertiary resource, based on reliable secondary sources, and not a place for personal interpretation.

Conflict of interest[edit]

In order to preserve the neutrality of the encyclopedia, we ask that you do not edit about your friends, family, employers, or place of work. Items held within a museum, or subjects related to a museum, are exempt from this. We do ask that you do not edit the Groam House Museum page directly.
