What Te Papa works on[edit]

We hold collections and knowledge relevant to many areas of Wikipedia, and the wider Wiki ecosystem, but only so many hours in the day. For the moment, our workplan will focus on smaller projects that build up staff interest and our ability to contribute more in the future. In particular, we try to contribute to Wiki projects in ways that connect with our programme of exhibitions, events and sector support.

What we've done

2024 plan[edit]

  • Host Wikipedian in Residence Ambrosia10 done
  • Participate in WikiCon Auckland done
  • Hold a successful 1Lib1Ref session done
  • Hold topical learning sessions for staff underway
  • Start a WikiProject to model exhibitions done
  • Hold a community editathon for Te Maori, the landmark Māori art exhibition
  • Attend Wikimania Poland
  • Attend regular community events ongoing

Wikipedian in Residence[edit]

Ambrosia10 tested the schema developed by the international Research Expeditions working group in a three month placement at Te Papa, supported by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.

WikiCon Auckland[edit]

Einebillion, Stitchbird2 and Avocadobabygirl joined in the annual Aotearoa WikiCon in Auckland. We shared knowledge, learned new skills and were blown away by the students who had been summer scholars at Auckland Museum.

1Lib1Ref 2024[edit]

This year's staff session was a huge success, with 16 editors and 500 edits made to Wikipedia articles.

Learning sessions for staff[edit]

Regular sessions are now happening as professional development, taking staff through the fundamentals of contributing to Wiki, from referencing to adding images to correcting bias.

Modelling exhibitions[edit]

A WikiProject to develop a detailed and flexible schema for exhibitions is now up on Wikidata, with the goal of being able to represent the diversity of Te Papa's exhibiting history and making it available to other curatorially-minded people.
