Celebrate women in archaeology, palaeontology and geology – by creating and improving Wikipedia articles!

TrowelBlazers was a one-day Wikipedia editathon dedicated to improving the Wikipedia pages of key women in archaeology, palaeotology and geology. There was a practical training in how to edit a Wikipedia page, support and resources on-hand to make editing easier, and we’ve even lined up a team of experts (biographers and historians) to give talks about trowelblazing women and to lend their expertise. This event was open to those new to Wikipedia and to experienced contributors. Female editors were especially encouraged to attend.

Our aim for the event was: 'Help us improve the visibility of a host of forgotten women in science! We can think of no better way to celebrate International Archaeology Day, Earth Science Week AND Ada Lovelace Day.'

10.15: assemble at visitor desk, Earth Galleries (Exhibition Rd entrance)
10.30: start - welcome talk, over tea/coffee
10.45: get cracking on editing, focussing on getting to grips with wiki training
11.30: break - we'll head behind the scenes (!) to the Earth Science Library Reading Room, to see archival material and fossil relating to women scientists at the Natural History Museum, and have panel discussion Q&A
12.15: (ish) - back to editing with renewed vigour!
13.15: lunch (everyone does their own thing)
14.15: welcome back - feedback on progress, and chatting about what we've discovered, trouble shooting
14.30: editing!
15.45: break - Back to the Earth Sciences Library for show and tell of fossils from the NHM collections collected/worked on by Dorothea Bate, Dorothy Garrod, Helen Muir-Wood, and Barbara Hastings
16.15: final editing flourish!
17.00: wrap up/end
