@L235:, I was hoping to utilize the geonotice to invite all Wikimedians in the Southern California region. Also it's been a minute since we have invited Wikimedians in (The Greater) Los Angeles (Area), to any events in San Diego.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 19:47, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RightCowLeftCoast: Hi, my personal position is that expanding this to LA will increase the number of people targeted by 5x and that optimistically only a couple users who live in LA would be able to come to San Diego. That's why I'm somewhat opposed to increasing the range to LA, but if you feel strongly about it I'm totally fine if you ask another administrator to take a look at this thread and increase the range if they want to. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 19:53, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@L235: @Redrose64, Deryck Chan, and MelanieN: the last meetup organized which Wikimedians from the Greater Los Angeles area were invited to attend, was in December 2019. If US-LA were to organize an in person meetup during the period which the requested geonotice is active, I would understand reducing the geographic scope due to overlapping geonotices, however this is not the case to the best of my present knowledge.--RightCowLeftCoast (Moo) 17:35, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RightCowLeftCoast and L235: I would support including LA in the SD meetup notice if there is any realistic prospect of anyone deciding to drive from LA to SD for the meetup off the back of that notice (which I think is plausible - we regularly have Wikimedians driving 2-3 hours from the Eastern England countryside to Cambridge meetups). However, I see that there's also the US-wide WikNic notice. Shall we keep the notice to SD only for now, and then expand it to include LA after 17 August? Deryck C. 20:56, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Having two geonotices with overlapping areas is not a problem - some people will see one, some the other, and a number of them will see both. If a user sees both geonotices, they can dismiss either one, or both as they wish. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:30, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@L236: Kevin, a geonotice was called the optimal solution at MediaWiki talk:Watchlist-messages#Open access for federally funded research, and was recommended at WT:CENT as well. EllenCT (talk) 20:05, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@EllenCT: My reading of those discussions is that a geonotice is preferred compared to posting at CENT, but commenters are not necessarily supporting a watchlist notification themselves. As SnowFire said, This may or may not be a worthy goal, but even if it was a worthy goal, it isn't really what this template is intended for. (emphasis added). I know this is hard given the tight deadline here, but I would prefer to see a more explicit consensus for addition before essentially launching a US-wide political call to action on Wikipedia. Courtesy ping: @Visviva, Xaosflux, Redrose64, Ymblanter, and Trialpears: Kevin (alt of L235 · t · c) 21:08, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't normally police geonotices, but this seemed inappropriate for a WLN as the 'call to action' is a bit vague and off-wiki - also only seems applicable to editors in one country. — xaosflux Talk 23:30, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: The point about geonotices is that they are directed to one locality - in this case the United States - so it wouldn't be seen by people to whom it's not applicable. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:03, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh indeed that helps, I was only here because I was pinged and only was referring to the WLN decline. — xaosflux Talk 11:38, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, I support the geonotice request. Unless I've been logging in to the wrong website all this time, we're here to give every person "free access to the sum of all human knowledge", which is what this RFI is all about. So it seems to me that this would serve the purpose of the project, and any other considerations would be secondary. It's a political request only to the extent that anything involving a government agency is going to be political. Vagueness is a legitimate concern; I think it would be ideal if there was an on-wiki page giving additional background and guidance, but I don't see any reason why the request as it stands would be any more problematic than any other sort of on-wiki call to off-weiki action (such as editathons). -- Visviva (talk) 02:26, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support We make a lot of crappy geonotices/centralnotices about events on commons, small editathons, pointless outreach events, blah blah blah. This is an important issue, and a geonotice is one of the only ways in which Wikipedia can publicly endorse the cause. SD0001 (talk) 07:31, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a fine use of a geonotice. It fits with the wikimedia movements goals and is actionable for everyone in the US. ‑‑Trialpears (talk) 12:09, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. My reading of this discussion is that various venues of notification have been explored, and a US-targeted geonotice is the least bad option. I think the lack of a precedent means that we should try it. We can always retract the notice if people start complaining. Deryck C. 12:53, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryck Chan: Consider me the first to complain; asking for activism on watchlists, regardless of how noble the cause, is completely inappropriate. Please remove this. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 13:31, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Deacon Vorbis:: Thanks for opening the discussion, and thanks User:TonyBallioni for unloading the geonotice. Let's continue the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Calls for political action in geonotices/watchlist notices. Deryck C. 14:41, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reason for requesting: We hope new and experienced Wikipedians might be able to join us. (I hope that this type of geographical listing is ok, I've copied it from previous geonotices. I'll fix if "corners" are needed. Thank you)
