Not sure if this is the right place to ask. I'm attempting to get the Coat of Arms of the Chi Tau Fraternity for the Chi Tau page. The Fraternity has been defunct as a national organization since 1929. (It was really only around in the 1920s.) The source that I want to use is https://archive.org/details/chanticleerseria1924duke/page/264 , the coat of arms in the middle of the page. Needless to say, the clipping will not be a rectangle, and preferably (might as well ask for everything. :)) , the grey background should changed to transparent (note this includes the area between the sword tips and the scroll and between the sword hilts and the shield. To be clear (in terms of copyright) this is the 1924 yearbook but I can't find a copyright notice in what was scanned. -- Naraht (talk) 15:16, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone please create an SVG file of the "Banner of Light" (and the file should probably have that exact title, but only if possible of course) from TWOT, which is described in The Fires of Heaven book as a white and black disc (kind of like a Yin-Yang symbol, only without the internal dots) on red. The following rendition of the Banner displayed here could be used as a guide (only the thin black outline along the edge of the white half of the disc should probably be removed, and I'd also recommend using the same shade of red from the flag of Tonga for the background, as the book specifically describes it as being "brilliant red", which I think is supposed to mean bright red, though I could be wrong). @Begoon: That's great work, and thanks for taking the time to do this. Just one or two things though; Is there any chance that the image could be made into a File on Wikimedia Commons? It's just that all the other TWOT related flag files are already present on that site (as seen here so it might be better if they were all collected in one place. Sorry about this. And one last thing, perhaps the "Light" in the title could be spelled with a capital "L"? If only because that's how the name of the flag is spelled in the books that it comes from? Again, sorry for the hassle. I would understand if you are unable to though. Still a great piece of work. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:49, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fry1989, is there a target article? I think the design would be non-free (unless you know otherwise - some kind of PD-gov thing for Namibia?? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), so without an article it's not really possible to upload a file unless we know what free license to use. I'll do this for you if you can clarify that. -- Begoon 05:29, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have to disagree on the copyright. It's just an anchor in a circle with basic text. It's just above my abilities. I require it for a derivative image. There isn't currently an English article for the image, but there is one on the German Wikipedia that would use it. Fry1989 eh? 16:08, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well I don't know what TOO is for Namibia, but one man's "just an anchor" is another man's "creative design"... I'll tell you what I'll do, since it's you - I'll have a look at it tomorrow and put it on a public google drive for you - you can handle uploads/licensing yourself. Should be ready 24/48 hours tops - I'll drop a link here. How does that sound to you? If you get a favourable second opinion at MCQ or COM:VPC in the meantime I'll upload it too... Or someone else might do it in the meantime... -- Begoon 16:27, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ok, there's a folder at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1lP-oPMWwl-nVcbTpBqJuyCqNnlW8Y8Pp which you should be able to access. In there is an AI-6 file and an SVG. The SVG is also here (zoom out, it's a large nominal size).

It's nowhere near perfect, because it was fiddlier than I expected, and I ran out of time, I also took a couple of little "liberties", but you might be able to tweak it yourself if it's not quite what you want.

The text is converted to shapes, so that it renders consistently, but the text itself is in hidden layers (display="none") as text too, if it needs editing.

Let me know if there's something else you'd like me to do with it, or otherwise, enjoy (or not). -- Begoon 09:13, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, if possible, could someone please create SVG files of the flags of the following fictional countries:

The following rendition of the flag shown here could be used as a guide (only the tree should probably have a thicker trunk, in accordance with the previous description).

2) The "Flag of Arad Doman", which is described as being "a silver hand grasping a silver sword by the blade, point down... on a field of four green and three blue horizontal stripes". Again, the following rendition of the flag displayed here could be used as a guide for anyone who wishes to try it.

Okay, would someone please create SVG files of the flags of the following fictional nations:

This rendition of the flag here could serve as a guide for anyone who wishes to try it (though, given that the description describes the white roses on red as being first, I'd recommend flipping the flag horizontally, to better match the description).

2) The "Flag of Shienar", which is described as being "a black swooping hawk on a field of three blue and two white horizontal stripes". Again, this rendition of the flag here could serve as a guide for creating it (although I would recommend giving the hawk more detail, so that it's not just a black silhouette of one).

And in both cases, could the flags be done in the same size dimensions as the other TWOT flags already existing on Wikimedia Commons, as seen here? Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:57, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion
  •  Done - There's more than one way to interpret the "three white roses on a field of red, quartered with three red roses on a field of white", and I didn't much care for the way it was done in the wikia example, so I chose what seemed to make sense to me.

It can be done the other way (and, in fact, I already have - see below), but in that case the roses aren't actually "on" the field(s) described, they straddle adjacent fields, and it's not really "quartered" - it's kinda "halved and quartered" or something (although quartered in heraldry isn't actually tied to the number four - it just means multiple "arms/designs" on the one canvas).

Anyway, whatever you prefer is fine, I notice subsequently that the examples I can google have gone for the interpretation I don't like (ripple effect, I guess, one copying the other...) so I already did the alternative version, and put it in the file history here for you to just revert to if you'd prefer us not to be "odd-man-out".

There's nothing to prevent the second version being a separate file if you want both as alternative interpretations - the only reason I didn't do that already is that I know you like the file names to be consistent - so if you do want two separate files just say so, and decide on a name/name(s) for them. Thanks. -- Begoon 05:19, 24 August 2019 (UTC)-- Begoon 04:45, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to extract a svg version of the logo from a PDF file by using Inkscape, but the conversion messing up the gardiants colors. I have no idea why. Can you please successfully extract the logo from the file that will match the png version? Sokuya (talk) 21:30, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion
  • Sometimes gradients in pdf files are created using embedded rasters or other 'foreign' methods as "meshes" that don't translate directly to SVG vector. Inkscape will try to recreate them as "tiles" using the "mesh precision" settings it presents to you when you use it to open a pdf - this can occasionally be usable, but is often nowhere near a match. You can try to get it closer by increasing the setting, but that quite often just gives you a bigger, bloated svg that still looks wrong. That's your problem here. My version (CS6) of Adobe Illustrator doesn't even try to replicate that as a gradient if I use it to extract instead of Inkscape, it just plonks a bitmap/raster in as a "foreign artwork" "appearance" effect with clip mask(s).

When that happens the only option is usually to try to re-create the gradients from scratch, manually. If they are too intricate to get that right then sometimes it's better just to stick with the original png. I had a go at this one - see if you think File:DemocraticUnionLogo.svg is close enough - it's not perfect. I swapped it into the article so that you can see how it looks there. -- Begoon 05:16, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I think it's good enough for now. I will keep looking for an original svg file of the logo, but for now its perfect. Thanks! {{resolved}}
