[edit]

Hi. I am fairly new to Wikipedia, but have been lurking for several months. I hope to help improve the place in my own small way. My interests are PC Gaming, Books, Image editing, and old Comedy (Round the Horne, Beyond Our Ken, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, The Goon Show, Hancock's Half Hour) and some new, too - Dead Ringers, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You, Little Britain, and Blackadder. I am thirteen years old, live in Surrey, England with my parents and enjoy being part of online communities and forums. I can't remember how I came across Wikipedia, probably while searching for information for a school project on Google, but now I absolutely worship the place.

Seeya!

[edit]

I would like to know how to transfer my itunes songs from my ipod to my mac computer; I am using Tiger. Apple will not assist me in this matter and I had to reformat my g5 hard drive and lost all my 3000 songs, however, they are on my ipod. Hence, my question. My e-mail is: robertbuckenmeyer at hotmail dot com

Try the reference desk. (Reformatted email for security.) -- Essjay · Talk July 3, 2005 06:47 (UTC)

You cannot transfer songs from an ipod to your computer, only vice versa. The Genius Bar said it's to prevent piracy, etc. etc.

The Cantos of Ezra Pound

[edit]

This is probably the wrong place to raise this item. I am an idiot and did not know of another way!

Item 1)

You appear to be quoting from my book in articles on Ezra Pound and The Cantos. I have no objection to this; but feel that you should add the details to your book lists associated with Pound/The Cantos. The details follow.

A Beginner's Guide to The Cantos of Ezra Pound; Roland John:

ISBN 370520405X

Published by University of Salzburg Press; distributed in the UK by Hippopotamus Press.

Item 2)

Once I understand a little more about the project, rather than just using it for information, I will attempt to contribute in those areas where I have a little knowledge

Roland John Hippopotamus 3 July 2005 10:50 (UTC)

I've left a note on the talk pages of Ezra Pound and The Cantos. At the top of each article you'll see a tab that says "discussion". This is the best place to leave messages relating to articles, so I've directed people passing by those pages to your post here so they can have a look. The best place to engage in discussion with the author or authors of the articles now will probably be at Talk:Ezra Pound and Talk:The Cantos. Thanks. — Trilobite (Talk) 6 July 2005 15:24 (UTC)
Hi, Hippopotamus, please see your own user talk page, I have left a note for you. Bishonen | talk 6 July 2005 16:42 (UTC)

Hello WIKI-PEDIANS,

I'm a "newbie" here, so please be patient until I get the hang of the protocols.

My first "post" was in, I think, a discussion page, probably attached to my moniker of "ozogg", but I was trying to get it to point to the WIKI-PAGE titled RUGBY-UNION.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello all, new and old. I am finally getting around to creating an account since I've gotten tired of lurking in the shadows. I am basically a huge pop culture geek, knowledgable in many depths of that which is constantly talked about near the water coolers and so forth. In general, I am an information hound and I constantly attempt to learn as much as I can at any given time. Hi,

I've been using Wikipedia for ages now, and found it really useful for finding out info about nearly any topic under the sun. I feel that it's about time to give something back, if I can, since even a lot of topics i'm very familiar with are past the point where I can contribute. But I'll try.

Looking forward to working with the rest of you

Hi, I've been around Wikipedia for a few months now but only recently made an account and started contributing. I live in Tucson, Arizona, USA, and just turned 18. Though I'm relatively young I have rather broad interests, though I suppose I enjoy lingustics and general semantics more than most other things. I also have a strong interest in the tao and philosophy in general. Right now I do not focus on anything, but I'd like suggestions on what I might find interesting to work on (practically anything, really). [edit]

A mathematician by profession, I have an amateur interest in linguistics, and in the Turkish language in particular. I am from North America, but happen to have lived in Turkey for five years. For now, since I have some time, I am trying to contribute to Wikipedia on the subject of Turkish. Ideally, somebody with more knowledge than I will be able to improve my understanding: that would be the point of the whole project.

I once decided not to get involved in writing mathematical articles for Wikipedia, fearing it would be a great time sink. In principle though, Wikipedia is a better math reference than Eric Weisstein's Math World, because Wikipedia has nobody's name on it, and is so easily improved. I'm currently a college student in Electrical Engineering and would like to offer what knowledge I have to the world.

[edit]

I started using Wikipedia in September 2004 for research purposes. I came upon it by accident and immediatly fell in love. This is the first place I come to start research on any topic. I created an account and began editing in June 2005, when I found I actually had considerable knowledge I could add to Transposition of the Great Arteries and related articles.

Master of nothing (almost), beginner at all; my interests and areas of knowledge are extensive and varied - I basically study any subject which happens to catch my fancy - so I have put the lists on my user page rather than here. I have formally studied photography and business, and I have done very extensive personal studies on cardiology and psychology/psychiatry...but do check my user page for a full list!

Aside from outright article writing (as I can never tell what I may become inspired to write about), I can be put to use editing spelling and grammar, categorizing, merging, clarity and other various "clean-up" jobs.

Greetings and Salutations!

[edit]

I am a fairly new Wikipedian, and am just learning how much there actually is here! Since I was a wee bairn I've read through a variety of different encyclopedias, (Brittanica, Americana, Canadiana, World Book,Funk & Wagnells) macropedias, (Funk & Wagnells Wildlife) micropedias and even (Pear's)cyclopedias. I tend to interests in:

  1. History
  2. Biographies
  3. Social Justice Issues
  4. Trade Unions and the History Thereof
  5. Law (particularly labor related)
  6. Art
  7. Architecture
  8. Music
  9. Musical Instruments
  10. General Knowledge

I thought it prudent to leave the list at ten, and that's pretty much in order of preference. Writing "general knowledge" is an admitted cop-out, but for the sake of brevity I'll let it stand and add that I worked as a Chef d'Cuisine for over 20 years so I'm fairly well versed in culinary and gastronomic topics as well. And don't get me started about exotic cars! My goal here is to stay away from writing articles that I might have trouble in separating personal opinions from actual knowledge. So far the only articles that I have written were ones where I was actually shocked to find there was no existing entry for. And a little clean-up and additions to ones that I felt could use a bit of help. So far so good I think, and have gotten some good help from some good people already here (See my "Shout Outs"). All in all a pleasant experience and a real pleasure to contribute to such an important project. Good Luck to us all! Hamster Sandwich 09:57, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Im really interested in history, and i will be hoping to bring a more educational aspect to some of the history pages, and some other pages: english literature; just the books i've read, and maybe some work on economics, maths and physics. I really like current events and interesting scenarios and debates like the war on terror, the darfur crisis and economic issues. I personally believe that i can help bring a new viewpoint to the discussions on this site and a new balnkey of information to some of the articles. Identifying with the libertarian socialist stream of thought, I have been very active in grassroots organizing and action ever since the Battle of Seattle in '99. I love teaching history and the political sciences on a volunteer basis, a love which took me to western Ukraine for the last six months of 2003. I have been perusing Wikipedia for a few months now and have hopes of contributing mainly to the sections pertaining to anarchism and social struggle. Cheers!

Hi everybody.

I'm doing some research in social simulation and cognitive science. My research interests include Social Artefacts, Norms, Reputation, Responsibility, and the Cultural Evolutionary Mechanisms that support them. Technically, I've been studying and applying Agent Theory and Multiagent-based Social Simulation to understand Social Artefacts.

I think this is a good way to share and discuss knowledge - this makes an intersting new challenge for me.

Adding a name (and face) to an IP address

[edit]

Greetings,

I've been lurking around Wikipedia since late 2004, but didn't get around to creating an account until Spring of 2005. I've mostly restricted myself to only reading the entries at first because I guess it took me awhile to wrap my mind around a community based encyclopedia. With the vastness of the web out there, I guess I harbored the feeling that there is someone out there more informed on a topic, so I took a wait and see stance on entries that interested me before I added my own two cents.

I'm a writer for HP Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying games, I have a website for my book Secrets of Japan: [2] and also have plans to expand out into genre-based novel writing as soon as my academic career becomes less hectic.

I've just finished a Master's thesis on hikikomori for a Japanese Studies degree and I'm also a PhD student in Sociology. (Ah. WIll the grind of classes ever end?).

Related to my academic interests on Japanese culture, I maintain a blog on Japan's Lost Generation [3] , focused on the turbulence and eddies that 21st century youth must navigate on their way to adulthood in Japan.

Having lived in Japan almost six years and studied the culture for over twelve, I'm understandably a Japanese pop-culture junkie and enjoy karaoke (though not Enka), manga, anime (though recently I prefer more mature story-lines such as Monster), Japanese movies, chambara dramas and the like.

To balance out the junk food culture, I also practice Japanese Tea Ceremony, sumi-e ink wash art, and Kendo when I'm not so busy with thesis deadlines.

Pleased to make your aquiantance!

Very nice to be here...

[edit]

I've landed on Wikipedia pages in web searches a few times, and more recently when referred by a link in the litblog Grumpy Old Bookman. I discovered that there was an article here for The Odyssey, a TV series I created in the 1990s. I was most surprised--and happy, since the article was created just in April 2005. I couldn't resist adding more details that I happen to know about (only read about the conflict-of-interest guidelines later; I think I maintained NPOV--you tell me!). And I was ready for more...

I'm a writer with wide-ranging interests in many fields, including literature, religion, astrology, ancient history, environmentalism, economics, and the history of science. Working out from The Odyssey, I'm now moving on to genre fiction and other related articles. I'm thrilled with Wikipedia and everything it stands for.

Biggest fear: inability to extricate myself from Wikipedia when necessary. I'm taking a big detour right now from updating my own blog (Genesis of a Historical Novel).

I feel warmly welcomed. Thank you. PaulV 23:17, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Greetings all - I have been a lurker for quite some time now and finally realizing it is about time I put my two cents in where it might count!  :) I've only used Wikipedia as a 'pedia more than anything else, not taking much time to learn about Wiki-ness and the underlying principles of the community. This had more to do with lack of time than of interest - and now I'm taking some time to learn more and hopefully will be an active contributor soon.

My interests are fairly broad and dynamic - but focus in on issues of science, science fiction (not limited to Star Trek), education, world politics, Chinese language (Spoken_Chinese), Indian literature and culture and Japanese history and culture (eg. Miyamoto Musashi, Murasaki Shikibu)- at least as they pop into my head right now.

Thanks!

For now - please see my blog (one of many) for some idle entertainment, social commentary etc.

I'm not new to Wikipedia. I've lurked about namelessly and read entries on and off for awhile. I finally decided to make a name. I'm cynical, atheist, introverted, interested in philosophy, the human mind, making words with real meaning that haven't been named yet, chatting, photoshopping, arguing, thinking, reading, taking notes, drawing, downsizing idiots and of course being myself. I'm american and young if it's needed to be known. That's me.

Hey Y'all!

I'm a 5th year undergraduate at Boston University majoring in Biology and International Relations (Environment/Development and Latin America). I consider myself from Utah, but I've also lived in Virginia, Maine, and Hawaii as a Navy brat.

I have studied abroad in Germany, Italy, and Ecuador, and I speak and can do basic translation of German and Spanish.

I'm currently working on the pages for ski areas in northern Utah, as they are either non-existant (though linked to) or basic stubs. After that, I'll probably move on to other local Utah stuff as well as other things I have experience and interest in, such as Neotropical Ecology, Ecuador, etc.

Let's see... I think wikipedia is a great resource and I found it while doing research for a Modern Latin America paper on the history of oil development in Venezuela.

[edit]

Hi all. My name is Jerry Weichbrodt, and I live in southeastern Michigan, USA. I am an electrical engineer who has drifted toward writing software since leaving college in the 1980s. I am also totally blind. I have already contributed a few new articles to Wikipedia such as:

I am an avid reader and find it hard to narrow down my areas of interest. Some of them might be radio; reading; writing; technology, especially as it relates to accessibility for the visually impaired; oh, and I'm also taking lessons in playing the highland bagpipes.

I think Wikipedia is a wonderful project, and I try to help make whatever improvements I can to articles I come across as well as adding articles on topics I feel are worthy of an article. I hope what I've done so far and (hopefully) continue to do lives up to the standards of Wikipedia.

Hi!

My name is Peggy Brennan. I'm learning a bit about Wiki because my husband and I would like to use Wiki for a web site we're developing. We thought it would be the best way to develop good content in certain areas.

I just completed a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (via distance ed). I am currently working on a web site which will archive 30 years of multi-media material associated with a friend of mine (who also happens to be a priest) who passed away last year. I'm considering using Wiki to tell his life story, combining the knowledge of his many friends and extended family.

I'm looking forward to the experience!

Interested in translating for Wikipedia

Hi , I've been browsing wikipedia off and on for a few months now. I think it is a great project!! I would eventually be interesting in translating articles from French to English. I am a native American with French nationality and have been living in France for 9 years now. I work in a French public library.

Hey all. Glad to join the Wiki-experience. I've already posted my first entry on Urbanized Areas, and looking forward to learning more about the system. I think this is an important milestone in Internet development and look forward to keeping tabs on the Wiki-world, and Jotspot which could be really cool.

My interests are mostly in Technology and Real Estate, but I use this site for all kinds of initial research, so we'll see where it goes...

Cheers!

Ajit Q. says hello

[edit]

Hello everybody, my name is Ajit Q. and I've just started creating and editing articles on Wikipedia. I love the concept of Wikipedia, and I'd like to see it become the most comprehensive encyclopaedia anywhere, on the net or off it.

I try to edit/create about one page every day. I'm particularly interested in seeing more pages about South India, South Indian culture, orthodox Hinduism and South Indian politics, of which there are depressingly few on Wikipedia, so these are the kinds of pages I work on most often. I also correct Engineering, Science and Math-related pages when I find any with obvious errors. Besides Engineering and South India, I also get my kicks from literature and adventure.

Hello! I've been poking around here every once in a while for a while now, but I just now realized this was here. So, egg's on me, I suppose.

First off, I would like to thank Poli for giving me a warm welcome here.

Now: My interests, and therefore what I will happen to edit, are...umm...random? Well, not really, but still. Generally I'll be dealing with stuff relating to Video Games, Songs and Singers, Books, and uh...anything else that comes to mind, really. Hm.

Sorry, rambling on. Well, nice to meet all of you, and thank you for this place. I did not know of Wikis or what they were until about a year ago, and I find them...refreshing. Yes, that's the word, refreshing.

I'll cut this off, now. G'day!

Richard Collins - The Internet Foundation

[edit]

For the last seven years I have been researching the Internet to see how it might be a catalyst for dealing with global issues and systemic issues. I have done thousands of profiles on a wide variety of topics. In the past couple of years I started seeing Wikipedia showing up more and more. When I first saw it (probably about the time it started), I was put off and did not refer to it in my profiles. Now there is hardly a topic I do not make one or several references to Wikipedia articles. I am extremely interested in learning how to apply Wiki (which I do not yet understand) to a whole range of societal and scientific problems. My university education is in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Astrophysics, Economics, Demography - with a heavy emphasis on quantitative modeling and simulation of complex systems. My earliest research was on random neural nets, random sequences and series. I have lost count of how many websites I have created. I make my living as a Research and Theoretical Informatics consultant. I would love it if someone could tell me how I can use another editor to create these pages. It is frustrating not to be able to put in a blank line. I have only made one or two minor changes. I just worked on a stub for nuclear density that I will expand, if someone will help me.

I am greatly impressed by the quality of Wikipedia as an extremely helpful source of information, and I would like to help in every way to maintain and improve it so that the people of the world online can get any information they need free of charge. I first learned of Wikipedia through a search done with "Google." I have appreciated being able even as an anonymous contributer to edit entries on which I have expertise. I am at your service at anytime, and I am willing to answer any questions. I do want to say this: I will never edit anything unless I know what I am entering is factually accurate. I am sure that this is the laudable goal of Wikipedia: accuracy, comprehensiveness, and thoroughness. I have a graduate Master's Degree in Philosophy and am well-read in history and literature. drboisclair 21:12, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello...

Who am I? I'm an 18 year old student from Dublin, Ireland, who loves Monkey (or, as some people seem to prefer, "monkeys").Someone else had that name though, so I had to...experiment. I don't have my own web page, but you can find some stuff abut me on my friend's site, www.boxofjunk.net. My interests are mostly music oriented. My tastes are quite eclectic but mostly revolve around various metal styles, particularly symphonic and progressive.

I joined the Wikipedia community in order to play with random music-based pages... I made some edits before registering, to the Therion page, the Beyond Sanctorum page, and the Cthulhu page. These are all Therion-related, because I love them so much...

The page thingy I came here from said I should state where I found out about Wikipedia, so I should really share that. I found out from my French teacher who was trying to get us into one of her many interests, philosophy. (I've since graduated Secondary school- hoping to go to college, we'll see what my Leaving Cert results bring). I've been visiting the site a lot while bored at work, reading up on random stuff. I decided that I should probably try to give something back!

Anyway... Just saying hi. Feel free to contact me if you like, especially if you like crazy music like I do.

I'm in my senior year of aerospace engineering, but really I'm a geek of broader categories and I'll go researching if something doesn't sound right to me even if I know nothing about the subject to begin with. I browse a great deal, categories at a time. so far I've mostly done small edits, though I already know an article I want to add a great deal to and another I want to create. All in due time. I've had this account two days and it's only now that I've found this page! Instant knowledge doesn't come with a username. Darn. So back to browsing and seeing not only what policy is but how it's applied. Nice being here. AmyBeth 01:46:45, 2005-07-29 (UTC)
