Ryuko2001

[edit]

So, I've used Wikipedia for the last two years for help with research. I started editing a few pages here and there for minor grammar and spelling issues, which eventually led me to register a username because i was editing more and more often. I'm relatively new to major edits, formatting, and the like (as evidenced by my lack of a userpage) If i remember correctly i found out about wikipedia from google one day and now use it almost exclusively if i need information for personal use. I've now taken to watching the recent changes page for vandalism to articles.

A little about me, I'm a college student in Ohio, I have an incredibly good memory(not quite photographic but close) I have a mild phonic-tactile form of synesthesia. I don't have one specific area or expertise or area of extensive knowledge, but I do have an incredible resovior of useless facts(polar bears have black skin). If i think something I see is wrong, and I'm not doing something else, I will most likely find the sources needed to prove I'm right and then make the edit(provided it doesn't involve too much formatting). Thats all I can think of right now, cheers —The preceding Ryuko2001 05:35, 2 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Bad Wikipedian

[edit]

Hello. Although I am a rather new User, I personally would like to apologize to everyone whose articles I may have moved or edited that may not have met the standards of Wikipedia. I really only have begun using Wikipedia, on a regular basis, the past few weeks.

I would also like known, please, that I did not intentionally try to hurt Wikipedia. I truly want the community to understand that, so that I may start again on a fresh foot.

New (hopefully) contributor

[edit]

I've been using Wikipedia for several years as a valuable reference tool. I participate in a music forum that has recently established an internal wiki, and I have dabbled within it and have ran into one stumbling block: how to increase the dotted line box size, which I can't find an answer here as yet. Anyway, there is lots to learn here, and I will have more questions along the way ... always wanting to learn something new. Kh 01:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I am a wikipedia fan and a avid absract writer I like the mysterious so expect my pages to be controversial. AND mispelt with the bad grammar and such I find it compelling listening and watching the corrections people preform in thier tedious need to be perfect in a imperfect and humanie world. Mark Mikofski

[edit]

I used Wikipedia as a research tool during my graduate work at UC Berkeley. Now I use it as a resource for my classroom; I teach high school physics at Lighthouse Community Charter School in Oakland, CA. Although I am always skeptical of what I read on the Internet, I believe that Wikipedia is great resource.

My areas of expertise are in mechanical engineering, combustion, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, air pollution (air quality), fire protection engineering (fire dynamics), and energy. My research at UC Berkeley dealt specifically with inverse diffusion flames (similar but inverted to a diffusion flame) and the formation of soot and PAH in fires and combustion in general. I would like to see some of the knowledge acquired in this area available to the public, rather than restricted to the domain of research journals.

I am also somewhat educated in pedagogy.

Thanks and looking forward to contributing, --Mikofski 03:09, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seattle Metaphysical Library

[edit]

I am volunteer with the Seattle Metaphysical LIbrary, a non-profit lending library that has been in Seattle for 45 years.

The Library has thousands of books, magazines, and audio and visual media on a wide range of subjects, and I thought it would be an interesting project to start linking up some of this material with web content.

I was surprised to see that Wikipedia does not have an entry for the Seattle Metaphysical Library, and after waiting a couple of years, I see there STILL is not an entry, so I'm going to try to do it myself. I don't know how, so I'm here in the Help section.

This is my first post, so I'll see how it works, and what happens; it is a bit more daunting than posting to most discussion boards.

I don't want to write too much. I did that one time on a Wiki article that I thought was woefully incomplete (no mention of Jackson Pollock's connections to the CIA in the article on him). I created a long entry, and then did something wrong, I've not a clue what, and lost the whole thing.

New to contributions

[edit]

Hello! I've been a reader/lurker almost daily on Wikipedia since 6/2006, and have always wanted to find a way to help out. Recently, I found motivation to do more than fix tiny mistakes that were stumbled upon while reading, and started helping with the Wikify project and its backlog. As soon as I learn more, I plan to help with projects (such as WikiProject Kentucky), and anything else that might benefit from my contribution. Please let me know (on my talk page) how I can improve or even just how I'm doing (with the small number of contributions made to date). I look forward to meeting and interacting with everyone here, and thank you all for the great welcome, and for the great community you continue to make. Vendetta 22:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia offline reader for palm - work in progress

[edit]

(have I just overwritten someone elses comments?)

Hi, I've just finished a wikipedia offline reader for the Palm operating system. It is going to be either free or GPL'd.

It uses a converted version of the the article .bz2 dump file, and comes out at as a single ~1.7Gb datafile + .prc file. It also requires zlib (for palm).

Takes about 4 hours to do a full converstion (on a PC) - uses cygwin (and I guess linux would work too). Mainly perl scripts.

Supports : links, history, full article name search, some html based formatting.

Doesn't support : tables, pictures, funny wikimedia formatting (references, notes, definitions, fancy formatting - so you end up with basically the text body with some formatting, but readable), lists, chapters (direct # jumps) not all articles survive the conversion, these are due to technical issues (strange formatting in the article title)

Oh, and I skip "list of" because I can't see the use, but I'm going to do a run to see how much bigger they make the datafile.

I'm planning on doing some of the above depending on how much I feel I need them plus :- full screen view for article (turn off silkscreen if possible on PDA's that support it), different fonts.

I've only tested it on the TX and it is still in beta stage, there is a lot more work to do. And I'm still learning Palm programming, so the code may not be "optimal".

As I've written it primarily for myself, it currently does what I want to do, i.e. all the articles in a readable format.

I need to find a nice page in wikipedia that describes ALL the formatting commands that I'm likely to encounter.

Let me know if you want to test it, I can create a small datafile for a couple of 1000 articles in. [It's still beta so use at own risk etc.]

I'd also like to know if there is a discussion forum somewhere where I can discuss this further (user requests for new functionality etc).

Esperanto41 (Esperanto, world maps, s-f)

[edit]

Esperanto41 is the web-name of Gene Keyes, longtime Wikipedia user. Just began adding stuff: links to the original Esperanto pamphlet of 1887; and I started a page for Bernard J.S. Cahill (1867-1944), San Francisco architect, and inventer of the octahedral Butterfly Map of the world. (I'm a Buckminster Fuller fan, but Cahill's map is better!)

My interests are elaborated on my website, http://www.genekeyes.com , including strategic nonviolence, world map design, Esperanto, HyperCard, plus an online s-f romantic comedy I wrote, with adjacent English and Esperanto versions: The Me Clone / La Mi-Klono
