Hello, all!

I've been reading wikipedia for some time now. It's one of my favorite ways to look busy during the work week or when there's few hours left in the day. I'm not sure where I first discovered this site, but I've finally decided to make a name for myself. I've made a couple minor edits here and there before, but nothing big.

I'm interested in all sorts of things including computer science, astronomy, music, geeky humor, movies, you name it. Also, I collect spores, molds and fungus. As I've been bored a lot lately, I've noticed that there are a TON of stubs that I know at least something about that I'd like to work on. So I'll be trying to fix up whatever I find to be lacking in substance.

POSITRONS CREATION FROM ELECTRONS

[edit]

Bold text' As mentioned in the general aricle on energy, it is readily converted from one form to another. The writer ventures to suggest that the principle is not abused verbally in saying it applies to conversion of electrons to positrons. Because of the equal energies that the two paticles contain, the conversion may be possible. Unless some theoretical principle can be raised that forbids the conversion with small energy outlay, it should be tried. If only because other enegy sources that are available are unequal to future demands. Interaction between positrons economically produced and ambient electrons would provide an inexhaustible energy source.

Pferdkopf

Thomas Ross

From our earlier discussions, I understood you are contemplating a phase shift in the elementary particle which would change its property to antimatter without affecting it's energy. Might this be accomplished by a situtation (current in a crystal structure?). The String theorists might know why or why not.

Hey, folks -- I've been active for two-plus weeks, but haven't learned about this page until a moment ago. So, if you're one of those sociable folks who like to get to know the newcomers, please stop by my talk page and have a drink with me. I also hope you'll enjoy the new article I'm working on, New York's Village Halloween Parade. I think you'll agree the subject's an entertaining one.

Height of men through the ages.

[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam, I would very much like to know what the scientific findings are regarding the height (growth) of man through the ages. Example What was a man's height say at he time of Christ? During the last 2000 years how much more has man grown? Was there a time during the 2000 years when men were taller? Is there a book on this matter that I could read? Thanks Enver Khorasanee

Enver, are you working on an article called Height of Man through the Ages, or Height of Crucifixes through the Ages? I will do some research and get back to you. Welcome to WP. paul klenk 04:56, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, All I can tell you that when I visited the 'Muiderslot' in the Netherlands and other casstles in Europe I was amazed how small the knight's suit of armour(thier cuirass) were! 5 feet at the most which is smaller than me. Were men that small I asked myself? Even their beds were tiny compared to nowadays.

Hi there!

I'm Scott, and I'm originally from New England currently living in Tennessee. I am a former civil engineer (1999) as well as a former stockbroker and trading instructor at Fidelity Investments (2003). I'm currently recovering from some financial setbacks and am working my way back toward becoming a full time independent trader.

I use Wikipedia to research and explore all kinds of interests from math to music, aardvarks to zeno! However, I expect my main areas of contribution to be in the areas of mathematics, investing and trading, technical analysis, statistics and probability, logic, Objectivism, Ayn Rand, general philosophy, economic theory and finance.

I really enjoy the rigorous scholarly environment that I see here.

Lucanos - A Very Late Introduction

[edit]

Hi All,

I have been a member of WikiPedia (and a few associated projects) for some time now, and only just today took the time to check out my Talk page and found the link to this page... I am an avid supporter of open-contribution projects like these, and I am actually in the process of installing Mediawiki at my workplace to be used as a knowledge bank for my workmates. (Any advice or resources on tweaking/customising/administering it would be appreciated).

Thank you to all my fellow Wikipedians out there for helping create a very dynamic, very reliable, very comprehensive resource such as this site, I hope to be able to do my bit to help continue the good name of this resource.

Brodders

[edit]

My real name is Martin Brodetsky, and I'm based in Oxford, England (though I'm not an academic or affiliated to the Uni in any way).

My expertise lies in copy-editing, and I've spent the past few weeks browsing Wiki and making minor edits to typos and crap grammar where I find it.

Because the open nature of Wiki fits closely to my socialist ideals I've decided to get more involved, and will hopefully be having a greater input in future.

I look forward to virtually working with you all.

[edit]

I have used Wikipedia for about 18 months now. I stumbled on it while searching out some unfamiliar concepts for my articles. I am unable to recall the sepcifics now. In reviewing a recent book for JAMA I had relied on Wikipedia heavily for understanding socio-linguistic explanations for several new (to me) terms. I felt quite grateful for this ready and willing repository. My other alternatives were Project Muse, Academic Search Premier and other similar scholarly databases. They, too, were helpful but Wikipedia was easier and more succinct for my narrower purposes. I am hoping that I could, in turn, contribute to this worthy project.

With this in mind I have reposited my FIRST Wikiarticle on "Healthcare Delivery," manily from a historical perspective. I have received a few comments on it laready, and surely, these were very constructive.

I am a neurologist and an academic with health indurance experience. I have written scientific and peer-reviewed articles since 1972. I am one of the older users. The name is Saty Satya-Murti. I hope that I could continue to contribute and edit when and where appropriate.

Thanks for reading.

[edit]

I've been contributing to the Howard Zinn page for sometime without really being certain of Wikipedia style. In other words, I've been winging it by imitating what I see. This is horrible because I am a professional editor and writer. Mysekurity sensed there was quite a bit I do not know, and and sent a page full of practical links as to style and customs. Canadian Folk Music Artists?

[edit]

Hello, I'm Gene Wilburn, a writer/photographer based in Port Credit, Ontario, Canada. A few years ago I compiled a book entitled Northern Journey: A Guide to Canadian Folk Music (1995). I revised it into a 2nd edition in 1997. I no longer intend to update the book, and would like to add the major entries to Wikipedia. Would this be deemed appropriate?

I'm new to Wikipedia editing and will likely have some beginner's questions.

Thanks, Gene

[edit]

Hi All. I've been using Wiki as my first-stop fact resource for about a year and a half and have been doing little edits here and there, and finally decided it was time to create an account. Primarily, I do spelling and grammar corrections, so I don't have a lot of experience with formatting. I've done some de-stubbing prior to the username, but I tend not to contribute in large quantity because I'd much prefer to know 100% what I am talking about rather than be 95% sure and rely on other users to straighten my tangles out. *Shrug* Jack of all trades, master of none.

Now to see if I've figured out this signature creation thing with the tildes...

[edit]

Glad to be here. My physical address is in Colorado, USA, but what a great gift the Internet is, that it helps us to work and play with so many other people from so many places. I actually think the Wiki model could/should be used broadly in government, the press, and even private industry; the social and structural learning here may end up being as useful as the content itself.

I have used Wikipedia for a long time, but only recently felt it was time to contribute. Plus, it's a better use for my massive human brain than Sudoku. I'm a rank newbie, and it's nice to be in a space where there's so much skill--technical and social--in use.

Fiona Kelleghan would like to become a contributor

[edit]

Hey, Wikifolks!

I've admired this encyclopedia for a long time, and I don't think my ambition is to add a WHOLE lot, because I'm already a contributor to the IMDb in my spare time; and my work time includes both a full-time library job and my nights are usually involved in research and writing.

But I was delighted today to find that I was slightly plagiarized by an article about "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" -- delighted, I repeat, not offended. And I've found a couple of sites that I might be able to contribute my expertise to.

My (slightly-out-of-date) website can be found at the University of Miami, where I am the Metadata Librarian:

http://www.library.miami.edu/staff/fkell/vitae.html

My expertise lies in science fiction and fantasy fiction and film (to a lesser extent, in horror), and in animal behavior. I am also a politics junkie, but I come to Wikipedia to learn, rather than to rant. I earned my MLIS [librarian's degree] in 1989 and my Master's in literature in 1996 ... you can check my webpage.

I believe in the scientific method and in solid sources. I believe in getting second opinions, but I also believe in relying on the sources that believe in the scientific method or in scholarly protocols. I consider myself able to judge different sides of an argument based on the merits of the arguments, and not on my personal opinions.

If these beliefs make me unfit for Wikipedia, please let me know, before I set out to edit any pages. As a librarian at a major research university (University of Miami), I consider myself able and willing to help those who seek information on a subject without implanting my personal political views into a topic. The aim is to inform without prejudice, both in Wikipedia and in library science.

Thanks, all, for considering me for inclusion in the Great Wiki Project. Please do check my website before deciding whether I may be considered as a fair contributor.

With great respect, Fiona Kelleghan Book Reviews Editor Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts University of Miami Otto G. Richter Library Room 301D Coral Gables, FL 33124 (home e-address) fkelleghan@aol.com (work e-adress) kelleghan@miami.edu

Fionna, sounds like you're a perfect fit. Before you continue, you might like to create your own username. Hello, and Help

[edit]

Hello all. I have just started with Wikipedia today, and have been stumbling my way through adding photographs to articles about places and topics relating to The North Island, New Zealand. I think I've added about twenty photos and I'm not near done.

Anyway, I've been able to figure most things out except: I've uploaded two images that are not used in any article and I would like to delete them from the server. I have been all over the site and can't find any information about that. There's a lot about deleting content from published articles, but nothing I can find about deleting uploaded assets that you want to remove. I'd appreciate a pointer to any info about how I can do asset management of the content I have uploaded.

Thanks.

[edit]

Hello, I am a person with an interest in fields as diverse as Scandinavian design, science (human genome, biology, computer science), Africa and the Middle East. Presently mostly occupied with the Middle East and Africa.

An Wikipedia ambition: to write articles on different producers/makers/designers of Scandinavian (particularely Norwegian) design... ( Egersund Fayancefabrik, Porsgrunn Porselen, Figgjo, Stavangerflint, Tostrup, David-Andersen, Grete Prytz Kittelsen (Korsmo), Nora Gulbrandsen, Tone Vigeland, Plus, William Knutzen, etc, etc..) However, as Wikipedia is so tilted towards Western subjects anyway, it is not my first priority. But: if somebody want an article on any of the above subjects -or a related subject- please leave a note on my talk-page.

Also; I have quite a few pictures taken during travels in Africa and the Middle-East, especially of places of historical interest (I never miss visiting a place which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List...if I´m in the vicinity). I hope to upload some of these pictures to the appropriate articles...eventually... Regards, Huldra 05:08, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

True I would love to make some money on my research to support my family, and more work for my lab. I feel that I would sell the whole system not the information on how it works. Just to make it complete the way that I feel it should be I am currently working on a copyright act for this line of work. So no one can hold full rights to the information. Because I feel something this great would benifit the world than that of one person or company. Kgyarmati 18:17, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya

[edit]

Hiya, my names Darren, though as you might guess I have the nickname "Dash". I live in York in the UK. I love the idea of editing on Wikipedia-a bit like being a researcher for "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy"!

User: DarthPlaegis

[edit]

I'm a new user under the name of DarthPlaegis and I'm often editing articles about the Star Wars Movies or something related to them. I'll hope you sent me comments about my editings or whatever you like to say.````DarthPlaegis; September 25, 2005; 09:15 (UTC)

Hi my name is Eduardo, I'm already in my third year of college. I'm about to finish a bachellor degree in Environmental Sciences. I find your Wikipedia a very useful site for everyone who's looking for references about every topic and all that. I often edit articles of the Star Wars Universe here in this encyclopedia and I'm glad to be a proud user of this site. DarthPlaegis; September 25, 2005; 09:24 (UTC)

You were on C-span

[edit]

I forgot your name, but you mentioned you had been trading Options. That subject was never detailed in the segment you were being interviewed on. That would have been much more interesting. This Wikipedia stuff seems interesting, but being almost dead and in a diseased condition thanks much!

William J. Merryman

[edit]

Hi there!

My name is William Merryman, and I hail from Kansas. My knowledge is fairly random, spanning many different topics, such as Films, Books, Video Games, Television and other subjects. I have been told I am fairly articulate and have a good knowledge of grammar.

The Wikipedia has taught me many things I did not previously know, so it finally occurred to me that it was about time to give something back. I look forward to adding to this excellent resource of knowledge.

Wiki-Worldie

[edit]

Hey guys! I've been coming here from time to time for about a year to get reference help for school work, but recently someone I met on an online forum talked about being promoted to "Admin" on Wikipedia, and I thought "Wow, so random people really DO run it!" And decided I'd at least have a look. What really captured me and makes me want to help out and contribute is the mantra(I guess ... ) on the Wikimedia Foundation site - " Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing. And we need your help." To me, that's what the Internet SHOULD be about. Between all the Wiki sites, places like deviantARt, resources like All Music Guide, or IMBD, and (some) Weblog/LiveJournal sites, my faith that the Internet IS an opportunity at virtual utopia is strengthened.

A Bit about my name and my history online - I was just a very casual internet browser until around january of 2002, when a school-friend of mine introduced me to the MMO Runescape. I was hooked. My screename for the game was "World 1 Host" which i thought was clever when i was 14 :-P . From runescape, I was drawn to a fan-forum. And I soon decided that I liked the forum better then the game. I spent hours and hours online there, and I was promoted to Moderator only 3 months after joining. On there, some of my closer friends started shortening my Screename from World 1 Host to 'Worldie' . So why do I keep it? I'm not sure ...

My Wiki Plans - Well, Im going to sit back and take it all in for a few days. read the guides and FAQs. Get a feel for how things work here. I'm really looking forward to being involved, and would also like to be involved in multiple Wiki projects. Also hoping to start hanging around in the IRC channel(s ?).

Thanks for reading!

Hi all. I'm finally delurking so I can more actively use Wikipedia to help User:Sj plan the Wikimania 06 Boston bid. I occasionally in the past have made some edits, know something but not tons about wikis, etc. I work at the Berkman Center at Harvard Law School (where Jimmy Wales is currently a fellow), which is how I got into wikis and Wikimania, but except in specific instances related to the Wikimania Boston proposal I won't be acting in any work-related capacity. There's many loveable Wikipedians in my life, so, yay. I expect I'll still occasionally edit stuff, just now not anonymously, probably not have tons of time for much but but who knows. Sometimes a few hours geeking out on something specific is really relaxing...

Hello, I am new here (Gsandi)

[edit]

I have been looking at the various Wikis for a while, at first sceptically, but the more I see, the more I like it. I have been involved with the Open Directory Project for a while, so let's see how this is different.

I am Hungarian by birth, Canadian by adoption and an international civil servant living on the French-Swiss border by profession. I am fluent in Hungarian, although - having missed high school in Hungary - I'd be reluctant to write "educated prose" in my native language. My English is pretty good (I hope :) ), and, with decreasing levels of fluency, I know French > Spanish > Other Romance languages > Japanese.

My interests are manyfold, ranging from linguistics (Indo-European and Uralic studies in particular), mathematics, geography, astronomy (SETI is a favourite topic of mine), rail-based transportation (and computer simulations of it), small and large cats (tigers especially), and the card game bridge. I work in the occupational safety and health field, that's another interest.

I am married and have two sons. The older is a computer wizz - he has been encouraging me to join Wiki for months.

Hi! I'm a New Zealander living as a permanent resident in Australia. I have an interest in New Zealand places, institutions and people, along with their connections with the world. I take an interest in television advertising, postmodernism, generations, Christian institutions, leaders and theology.

I found out about Wikipedia through search engines, through my teenage children, and through conversations with my online colleagues.
