It's an AP photo. Per WP:Fairuse counterexamples #5. Now - how do you see it as fair use ? Megapixie 07:13, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded by QuizQuick (notify). UE I have notified QuizQuick. Image is unencyclopedic. Purpose of image is to propagandize the death of an enemy, which is inappropriate for Wikipedia to participate in. The image has no real information content; readers are perfectly capable of understanding Zarqawi is dead by reading the text "Zarqawi died at such and such a time". There is no need for this shockingly inappropriate photo which insults our readers' intelligence. Kasreyn 05:10, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete -- more to the point, this is a copyrighted CNN photo of a scence incorporating a PD-USgov image; this should be deleted, given that a 100% copyright-clean version of the original PD-USgov image is available from the Commons at Image:Zarqawi dead us govt photo.jpg. -- The Anome 09:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's as may be. You haven't responded to the image's lack of information content or its unencyclopedic nature, so my reasoning would hold equally true for the other image as well. Respectfully, Kasreyn 09:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • In that case, do you consider this image [1] just as unencyclopedic? QuizQuick 15:37, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, no I don't. The image seems to be informative in that it shows Bundy engaging in some action. I'm not very familiar with his case so I don't know what he's supposed to be doing (conducting an orchestra?), but a photo of someone doing something can be considered informative as long as it's something noteworthy. Zarqawi just lying there with his eyes closed and red stuff on his face tells us nothing. It doesn't even tell us he's dead. I can lie down and put red fluid on my face and close my eyes, too; it doesn't mean I'm dead. We simply don't need an image to prove he's dead, or (IMO) even to address the propaganda issue (in fact, we should be asking ourselves whether including the image isn't playing into the hands of either side on the propaganda issue). Kasreyn 17:23, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See my comments on the talk page for the article: the image is significant because of its prominent use in U.S. government propaganda and its subsequent re-use by Islamists. It was reported at the time as a propaganda own-goal: see the cites I have provided in the article. -- The Anome 10:08, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I understand that, and that makes sense. We should report on the propaganda use of images of Zaraqwi's body. But why is it necessary to show the image to do so? Can't we just say "images of Zarqawi's body were displayed for propaganda purposes by the US and Al-Qaeda" or whatever? Kasreyn 03:09, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete (of course) Kasreyn 03:01, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comment It should be deleted, because it's a copyrighted CNN image of a PD-USGov and there should instead be a similar image depicting a similar scene, but which is licensed favourably to WP and WP:Commons. It should be kept because it shows that such images were used for propaganda, kept until a better replacement surfaces. Moreover, there already is an image showing Al-Zarqawi dead (see some link above). I have a small wish that Wikipedia/Wikimedia had reporters in those hot-spots... -Mardus 12:43, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uploaded by Coburnpharr04 (notify). Invalid fair use. According to WP:FAIR#Counterexamples #5, a photo from a press agency is NOT a valid example of fair use. BigDT 19:08, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It could possibly qualify as fair use in Deus Caritus Est since there are no free images of him signing it. However, it does not qualify anywhere else, for example, in the Roman Catholic Church article, because there are so many images that could be just as relevant there. savidan(talk) (e@) 16:16, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The requirements for fair use are an "and", not an "or". Just because there are no free alternatives available doesn't make it acceptable to use an image that does not otherwise qualify for "fair use". It is never "fair use" to use a media photograph in an article about the subject of the photograph - that would be no different than copying and pasting text from a media article. BigDT 18:34, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This qualifies as fair use in Deus Caritas Est. In this case, it is NOT being used simply to show the Pope. Image has been removed from other articles. Not deleted. howcheng {chat} 17:05, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
