Wiki Loves Pride is an opportunity to write about LGBT culture and history, in the context of Washington, D.C. and the American experience. Join museum curator Katherine Ott and archives specialist Franklin A. Robinson Jr. for special behind-the-scenes tours and a chance to edit Wikipedia among friends. No previous Wikipedia editing experience is required (the day includes a short introduction to editing), but please create your account before the edit-a-thon begins.

Because the edit-a-thon will be held in non-public spaces in the museum, participants will need to be escorted to the edit-a-thon location by museum staff members. Participants should gather in the National Museum of American History's Constitution Avenue lobby, near the visitor services desk.
What to bring
A fully charged laptop computer with charger (and extension cord if you have one!)
A government-issued picture i.d.

Please sign up below if you plan on joining us at the Museum. Space limited due to small venue. Lunch will be provided.

Goals

  • To encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia
  • To improve a selection of Wikipedia articles related to LGBT topics
  • To make Smithsonian-held materials more openly linked
  • To increase awareness of the research resources freely available through libraries, archives, and museums

10:00-10:30 am Arrivals. Participants should gather in the National Museum of American History's Constitution Avenue lobby, near the visitor services desk, for staff escort to edit-a-thon location
10:30-11:00 am Welcome by Smithsonian staff, and introductory training session on editing Wikipedia
11:00 am -12:00 pm Behind-the-scenes tour of the LGBT collections in the Museum and the Archives Center
12:00-1:00 pm Lunch (provided)
1:00-5:00 pm Wikipedia editing
