Wikipedia:Meetup/Texas A&M University–Commerce Libraries/Native Voices Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, April 27, 2017
On April 27, 2017, the Texas A&M University–Commerce Libraries hosted a Native Voices Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in conjunction with the arrival of the Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness traveling exhibit at the James G. Library. The event ran from 5 to 7 pm in Gee Library Room 502, and everyone was invited to attend, regardless of Wikipedia experience or skills. It was especially welcoming of new users.
Agenda[edit]
The Edit-a-thon had two distinct elements. The first part, from 5 to 6 pm, was an introduction to Wikipedia conducted by Michael Barera, an experienced Wikipedian, geared toward first-time and new editors. The second part, from 6 to 7 pm, was a collaborative session focusing on collectively improving the article medicine bag that involved a Wikipedian, a subject specialist, and a Research and Instruction Librarian.
First hour: learn to edit Wikipedia[edit]
- 5-5:10 pm: creating accounts and signing up on this page (see below)
- 5:10-5:20 pm: creating user pages with bold text and internal wikilinks
- 5:20-5:30 pm: adding images to user pages (images from Wikimedia Commons)
- 5:30-5:40 pm: creating sandboxes with bold text, links (both internal and external), and images
- 5:40-5:50 pm: enabling VisualEditor and adding a reference to sandboxes (using the book Professor Mayo's College [see also WorldCat] as an example)
Second hour: editing collaboratively[edit]
- 6-7 pm: collaboratively editing the article medicine bag
