    That's the worst oppose rationale I've seen, and I'm the one who did this! --The Σ talkcontribs 22:57, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Right. Sure, its cute and clever. But MOTD is not the place to be edgy — some people will have a problem with Hitler quotes being splashed all across the Wikipedia userspace and its not like there is a shortage of quotes to choose from. jorgenev 23:59, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
But still... you should be judging on the merit, not who wrote or said it. --The Σ talkcontribs 03:37, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
So, you're saying cultural context has no meaning at all. Is it a good idea if I grab a copy of the Reichskriegsflagge and march down main street because I think the design is cool? jorgenev 01:40, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
It depends on how stringent the laws on political freedom are where you live. So in some cases, yes, you could. --The Σ talkcontribs 01:56, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
(adding) Didn't Hitler rule in the time of the creation of volkswagens and the autobahn? Should those be banished for eternity because of Hitler? --The Σ talkcontribs 02:23, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
So.. the cultural connotations of a swastika and a voltswagon are the same? I'm not saying its wrong to appreciate the speaking skills of any one and this does not bother me personally, but, I think we can do better in terms of respectability than 'the online encyclopedia that looks to Hitler for their motto of the day', which to be honest is something I would expect of 4chan. jorgenev 03:33, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
If the quote fails, then it fails regardless of who said it, and if it's good, then it should gain consensus, and being said by Hitler shouldn't change anything. --The Σ talkcontribs 04:05, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
That would be true were this an impersonal project, but since this is based on and focused at users, rather than readers, it is a demonstrably personal project and therefore the source of the quote is blatantly necessary. Taking an example, if Justin Bieber started speaking about what it takes to be intelligent and we put him up on the motto of the day board, his comments would have to be taken with a pinch of salt, because, as we all know, the man is far from the sharpest tool in the box. Were Richard Hammond to start speaking about how to become an advanced quantum physicist, we would have to think twice about the information, and thirdly, were Hitler to start speaking about peace, we would need to take a look at the source and realize that perhaps we should not be taking mottos from this person about that particular subject, or indeed any quote in which he is trying to bring out good attributes in personality, because, while I admit that the man was a genius, he was also insane. I'll not vote against all of your Hitler quotes as jorgenev has done because you at least deserve a chance to let other users vote, but I will ask you to please not offer up any more quotes from Hitler, because I and a lot of other people, will find him unsuitable. Thank you. That Ole' Cheesy Dude (Talk to the hand!) 16:25, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

  • Oppose - I, too, like the message, and the links work really well with it. The context—a quote by Hitler with political overtones—is problematic, however, and I'm sure many people will be bothered by it. In particular, I worry about how people will perceive the "We": although in the proposal "We" refers to the community or WMF, in the original quote it likely referred to either the NSDAP or the Reich government. I don't think we should reject all quotes by Hitler, but we ought to be wary of ones of a political nature. -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:23, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

  • Comment - This whole set of nominations has led to me thinking of something. Obviously, this is going to be a very tough one to decide on, with all of the "xth Preference !votes. Should we just stop allowing these types of votes, and make it so that all need to be a "Support" or "Oppose", or do we try something else? ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:58, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
    I'm definitely with you there. Although this isn't technically a vote, practically it often turns into one because a lot of likes/dislikes of mottos are subjective. A straightforward support or oppose is a lot easier to tally up. I'll change my votes here so that the decision becomes a little bit easier, at least. Mr. Stradivarius 16:57, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

The soul selects her own society,

Edit 1 ~ What about this? I used Help:Drawing attention to new pages (for "her own society") instead of Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. It makes more sense to me, but I could be wrong. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 13:59, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Oppose - I know that this isn't the intention, but it gives off the message that new articles are excluded after some sort of initial set of them. I know you don't mean that, but that's the impression that I get. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 22:29, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Ko te manu kai i te miro, nona te ngahere;
Ko te manu kai i te matauranga, nona te ao.

  • Comment ~ I'm not sure the first line is so "negative". I need time to think about it and see if I'm able to find better links for the first line. The quote is simply wonderful, of course.
