Rabindranath Tagore[edit]

Information is needed about how this article should be structured. I have been comparing its layout and coverage with the featured articles on Mario de Andrade and John Vanbrugh. But additional help on whether the whole article should be chronologically organized or whether discussion of his art (literary analysis) should be segregated out from the biography. Also, exactly how and to what depth should this article cover more of his literary works? He has many works, and I do not want to choose the wrong pieces for discussion here. The article now includes several excerpts. Should more be added, or should all excerpts be eliminated? Shakespeare's article has none, yet the Mario de Andrade article does. I'm now taking care of the lack-of-references problem; instead, I really need information on structure and depth of analysis. Thank you. Saravask 17:43, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think a chronological account would be better and the literary analysis be toned down. 1. What is "Robindronath Ţhakur"? 2. Mention the name Calcutta in parentheses the first time you use Kolkata. 3) I recall that Tagore spent much of his life in Shillong. Calcutta, "Robindronath Ţhakur", TOC.

I believe I've taken care of these three problems you pointed out. Calcutta has been inserted as a parenthetical upon first use of "Kolkata" (I could even replace "Kolkata" with Calcutta in all instances of appearance, if needed). "Robindronath Ţhakur" is apparently a romanization/transliteration from the Bangla/Bengali language rendition of his name. I just put mention like this: transliteration: Robindronath Ţhakur. This alternate spelling was here before I started working on the article. I've eliminated several headings. More will be eliminated once I finish chronologically ordering the text. But, by all means, let me know if I've missed something. I hope this helps.

Chronological flow, integration of literary criticism

I am now working on a draft of the article off-line. Please expect this draft uploaded by Tuesday. Uploading it earlier would mean interference from others, due to incomplete integration, etc. I am slowly reworking the literary criticism into the biography section, as done in Mario de Andrade. Thus, I am inserting discussion of works such as Gitanjali according to their year of publishing in the original Bangla. Let me know if different dates should be selected.

Shillong/Brookside mansion

I have been reading through Tagore's travel letters and essays. I've found mentions of Argentina, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Burma, United States, but so far not of Meghalaya or Shillong. So I have also done web searches. There are references to "Brookside", a mansion in Shillong. The most suggestive web material (taken from here) read as follows:

"A sprawling country mansion located in a woody groove in a secluded area of the city, encircled on three sides by the deep gorges of the Umshyrpi stream, was host to Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore during one of his visit to Shillong in the early years of the century. Touched by the serene and tranquil beauty of the place, the Kabiguru burst into rapshody and penned a number of his immortal works while at this mansion, named Brookside at Shillong. The grateful owners of Brookside property retained the room,the bedstead and other furnishings used by Tagore,for posterity. The Brookside is located in the Rilbong area of the city."

I cannot find anyhting more extensive or substantial than this. I wlll keep looking, and will let you know the results here (before any FA nomination). I do not know if travel websites are acceptable references (I am guessing not). I will try looking through my Tagore books for details.

tone down literary analysis

I will see what passages can be moved to Wikisource and be referenced to from this article. I see what you mean; no other featured articles on artists I've seen quote so extensively from the subject's works.

No, please do not change all instances of Kolkata. The reason I asked you to do this was that many may not associate Kolkata with Calcutta. As per a long drawn debate earlier this year, the first use of the word Kolkata (and also Mumbai & Chennai) have to be followed by its old name.

I think you should also explain a few terms inline. Terms such as "Brahmo, polymath" etc
