Stargate (device)[edit]

There has been some discussion about improving an article about Stargate universe to FA status. This artiche has since developed nicely and IMO contains all the important things. Before I nominate it for FA, I would like to hear some comments from the other users. --Tone 23:38, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think there's a contradiction between the "dialing" section and the "chevron" section. The former says an address is normally six symbols (seven if intergalactic), while the latter says seven symbols, or eight if intergalactic.-gadfium 01:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully I've cleared that up. The ambiguity comes from the fact that the final symbol one must dial isn't part of the address, but instead represents the origin gate and so is different for each gate. I also clarified that the address represents the location rather than specific stargate at that location - when you move a Stargate to a different solar system the address you need to dial to reach it changes. • References are a requirement of featured articles, see Wikipedia:Citing sources. People should be able to fact-check everything mentioned in the article with the sources listed in the references. Use footnotes (like m:Cite/Cite.php) to guide the reader to relevant references. --maclean25 08:01, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The references here are the episodes themselves. They are linked to the episode pages. So is looks like that: If a Stargate's wormhole passes directly through a black hole it can lead to an alternate reality, as seen in "Ripple Effect". I wonder if there can be written references apart from fansites... Do you think the episodes should be listed as footnotes instead? This seems rather unconvenient for me but acceptable. --Tone 14:59, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok, those references are fine. However, a featured article is going to need to go beyond the fictional universe and address stargates as a fictional concept created and developed for use on the TV series. For example, Spoo explains its real-word origins with the writer. Sources for this can include interviews or the-making-of documentaries. --maclean25 07:16, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've recently created template:cite episode and tried it out on a couple of pages, we could use that to do full-blown "standardized" citing for much of the article too. I've been planning to start using it in a wide scale eventually anyway, I've just been waiting on some sort of response from other cite template creators to see if I'm on the right track with it. • It might not hurt if you could find sections of the article that you could expand and turn into their own pages. Currently, the page is 39kb long, and while pages can become FAs at that length, if it's too long, it might hurt the process. Possible spin-off articles include an article about Stargates other than the ones in the Milkyway, Complexities of the Stargate, and Stargate operations. If you'd like, I could try turning one or two of those into their own articles.Dr. B 19:06, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, let's try. Though I wonder if enough material could be collected for separate articles about Pegasus galaxy Stargates or similar. I agree that the article is rather long but FA articles are often even longer. At least it is comprehensive. I wonder how to add stuff that maclean25 suggested. Maybe another user has more material about that. --Tone 14:11, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If the article is split, how will it fit into these templates?

{{StargateTopics}} {{StargateTech}}

You could create a new template looking something like this. The Stargate Glyphs srticle should only be done if we create a grid of all known Pegasus glyphs, it could also be a way to describe stellar drift and the correlative update system. I am sure that most would agree that we have plenty to creat an rticle on the Pegasus gates, we would need more information on the Milky Way gates if we creat an article on Stargate Glyphs. I think this should be done and I would be more then happy to help with the creation ove these articles. Jumper 360, 20:20, February 2006

General Stargate Information  Edit

Stargates, Complexities of Stargate Function, Operation of Stargates, Pegasus' Stargates, Milky Way's Stargates, Super/Macro Gates, Stargate Glyphs

You may want to fix the template so that 'Stargates' actually links to 'Stargate (device)' as opposed to the non existant article of 'Stargates'.Dr. B 19:22, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If I reconsider, articles like Complexities of Stargate Function don't really function as independant ones so IMO it's better to keep them under the main one. Still, Glyphs are ok for a separate articles, either one or two. I wonder how much about the Stargates will be told in the future seasons but I think the article is not going to grow too much in time. --Tone 21:13, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is my opinion that even though I wrote some of this article, and that it is a good article it still needs alot of work before it can become a FA. Each section needs to be cut to half to 1/3 the size it is. The full section that it was should be put into a main article For that section. These pages should be put into a new line on the Stargate tech template titled "gatetech" Also, there is no section on DHDs. We should have a paragarph or 2 on them then link to the main Dial Home Device article. Tobyk777 04:34, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
