I am requesting this portal for peer review so I can receive comments about the structure, images, selection, content and colors, which are based loosely on Portal:World War II prior to FPC. WikiCopter (radiosortiesimageslostdefenseattack) 21:33, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comments from Bencherlite

Firstly, I think this is a portal with an interesting subject field (worldwide topic, plenty of possibilities for displaying high-quality content) and you've made a good start. A few comments, questions and suggestions.

  • Firstly, I notice you've not used random subpages for the section. Is it your plan, therefore, to update the portal with new selections? If so, how often? I ask this because most, if not all, of the most recently promoted featured portals use random subpages rather than reliance on manual updating, and Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:London Transport/archive1 is an example of an FPoC failing on that basis, even when supported by an active WikiProject.
    • Operation Nautilus is supporting, and for now I plan to manually update, at least until prior to the FPoC.
  • "Good article" isn't a standard section title: "Selected article" would be more usual (or "Featured article" if all the chosen articles are of Featured quality, but that's not the case here)
    •  Done
  • Incidentally, if you're looking for GA and above candidates for inclusion, Wikipedia:CatScan is very helpful e.g. this GA search.
    • Will use catscan, thanks for the tip.
  • I think that having a "more good articles" link that goes straight to WP:Good articles isn't very helpful to readers of the portal. Even Wikipedia:Good articles/History#Warships would be better.
    •  Done
  • The news section: the current story has been deleted on Wikinews, which means your link goes nowhere... it's also a bit long in comparison to other portal news sections, and unless there are lots of news stories about submarines, a long story that goes stale will make the portal look out of date more quickly than a short summary of one or more stories. I wonder, instead, whether a better format would be one of the following:
    Portal:U.S. Roads/U.S. Roads news (a featured portal), with short new items and references (references shown on the main portal page, at the bottom);
Portal:University of Oxford#News (not featured, but I'm quite proud of my work on it!), which has a combination of Wikinews and other items (with references shown on the portal subpage, but not the main page). This leads me onto my next point...
    •  Done to US Roads news
  • Searching Wikinews, I see that there are plenty of stories about submarines (accidents, diplomatic incidents, purchases etc) and I would have thought that a Wikinews category for submarines would be a viable option (said he, wearing his occasional Wikinews hat). Shall I see what I can do for you on Wikinews? You could then use the Wikinews importer bot for some or all of your stories.
    • Sure, I used a search for the Sub news, but only did the ones from October this year.
  • Your links for "current events" and "Wikinews" are the same, and both are broken... the syntax for links to the English-language Wikinews is just [[n:Name of article|Name of article]], or a simple [[n:|]] to link to the main page (n:). If you get a submarine category, of course, then you can have a link there instead of the "current events" link.
    •  Done
  • "Selected stub" isn't a section I've seen elsewhere on featured portals - can you point me to any? You ought to link to the article, otherwise no-one can easily visit it to expand it!
  • Are there enough decent biographies of submariners or others associated with submarines to have a "selected biography" section?
  • You need to add the portal to some categories: one (or more) for portals, and also to Category:Submarines.

That's all for now. Hope this helps. BencherliteTalk 13:36, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is former featured Portal that has just been cleaned up again. Any comments or questions would be welcome to prepare for FP nomination.--Novus Orator 11:13, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I am the creator of this Portal (it just went live a few hours ago) and I am curious what needs to be improved or changed before it can be prepped to be a featured portal. All comments, criticisms, and contributions to the continued development of this Portal are much appreciated. If you decide to actually continue working on this Portal please consider adding your name here as a supporter of its Taskforce. Thanks!Novus Orator 07:51, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
