Moving to FP candidate status. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:27, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to bring this to Featured Portal status, and want to know what changes, if any, need to be made before it's ready. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:44, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Contents

  • 10 selected articles, all are FA class. If I were to expand, I would need to go into GAs. I've already selected a list of candidates to put in if that's the way we want to go.
  • 15 selected regions, none are FA or GA class, however the content I pulled is all cited and the prose is good. Simply put, there is no recognized content to work with for this section.
  • 10 sets of 5 DYKs. Sets are balanced to make sure that no more than two entries per set mention the word "Massachusetts" or the word "Boston".
  • 10 selected pictures. We can probably go up to 15, tops, while staying in FPs, however the relevancy to Massachusetts drops sharply if we do.
  • 11 selected biographies, all are FA class. If I were to expand, I would need to go into GAs. I've already selected a list of candidates to put in if that's the way we want to go. I have opted to not use living politicians for this section, as it causes unneccessary controversy. We have one dead Republican in Coolidge. If we expand into GAs I'll balance it out with Ted Kennedy, but I really want to avoid sticking Romney in, FA quality or not (it's at FAC now), because Portals aren't supposed to be controversial, and I don't want to start a one-up-the-selected-bios-from-my-political-party game.
  • State facts section. I've never seen one of these before, but it works, and I kind of like it.
  • Standard portal stuff at the bottom.

Things that need fixing

  • The "More selected articles..." and "More selected location..." clickers show up. They no longer show up for the pictures, DYK, or bios sections. I don't know why.

As you can see, for a weekend project I've put a good deal of thought into how to make it work. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:56, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions and recommendations

The portal is very good and already quite close to Featured quality, in my estimation, here are just a few suggestions and recommendations, take 'em or leave 'em. :)

  1. Randomize image display and reformat the Intro section, see model at Portal:Norway.
  2. Reformat Things you can do section to make it look a bit nicer, see model at Portal:Internet.
  3. Reformat Related portals for easier maintenance using template, see model at Portal:Arts.
  4. Add in Featured content display, see model at Portal:Film.
  5. Reformat Topics section, expand it a lot more, and create original display, see model at Portal:Television.
  6. Associated Wikimedia = should be its own subpage, not making use of the template directly, easy fix, just create its own subpage and subst it in there.
  7. Add an In this month section, see model at Portal:Theatre.
  8. Expand Selected articles to 20 selections, use the GAs.
  9. Expand Selected biography to 20 selections, use the GAs. (Ah, however I agree with your above analysis about this as well.) Defer to your judgment on which GAs, etc.

Hope that's helpful, — Cirt (talk) 20:03, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
