Some images display in files downloaded, others don't

[edit]

When I download a file from the internet and edit the image paths appropriately, the images of the file usually display normally as one would expect. However, for Wikipedia files this is often not the case. Also, if I try to add a new image to any file (meaning a new image not downloaded with the file), the new image will often not display. Similarly, if I crop an image, or convert a GIF image to a JPG, the new image will often not display (if I convert GIF to JPG then of course I change the extension in the file from .gif to .jpg).

My question is: Given a simple, obvious command such as <IMAGE SRC=imagefile.jpg> inside a downloaded file, by what conditions would imagefile.jpg simply not display? All files are in the same Windows folder, and all paths have been edited appropriately. 2604:2000:2FC0:F:1E6:A4D0:891B:E602 (talk) 02:24, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Something like Wikipedia, but with a focus on using reliable sources?

Is there an encyclopedia like Wikipedia, but with a focus on using reliable sources? Edward Mordake (talk) 05:59, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has a strong focus on reliable sources. 10Eleventeen 06:04, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's editors do not. Edward Mordake (talk) 06:04, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Evidence, please. 10Eleventeen 06:05, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know who Kanye West is (or how to pronounce the name), but I gather from Talk:Kanye West that there is some argument over the type of music. I don't know why this question is being asked at the Computing Desk. Dbfirs 06:18, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Same here. 10Eleventeen 06:20, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Is there something similar to Wikipedia (an online encyclopedia) that isn't Wikipedia and has a focus on using reliable sources? Edward Mordake (talk) 08:56, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Try List of online encyclopaedias, you might spot something more to your liking. Different people have different ideas about what is good or right and different interpretations of reliable and trustworthy, my favorite exaample of 'different ideas' is Conservapedia which says it is a trustworthy encyclopaedia. Dmcq (talk) 09:03, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Conservapedia is hilarious. https://www.conservapedia.com/Atheism_is_a_religion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQp6GMzGPpU Edward Mordake (talk) 09:53, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Conservapedia believes Wikipedia is hillarious: [1]. --Doroletho (talk) 12:38, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well I think that article is funny okay but I think they meant it to be serious. Dmcq (talk) 23:05, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just as the theory that Atheism can operate as a religion is serious. In this case, the word "funny" is being used to mean "I don't agree with it because I am superior to everyone else and their silly opinions make me laugh." Note: This entire thread is a passive aggressive attempt to prove that Kanye West was never ever a popular Hip Hop artist. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 11:25, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Probably to no one here's surprise, the OP has now been blocked. Reason is as a sock of another editor who also used to hang out on the RD. I.E. they apparently hate wikipedia's non use of RS so much, they can stay away even they've been clearly told we don't want them. Nil Einne (talk) 10:30, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any information on Windows 10 workstation?

[edit]

Hi there. I am looking for some first-hand information on Microsoft Windows 10 workstation [2]. It should have some features I don't quite understand. Thanks, AboutFace 22 (talk) 20:41, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JDSN72A1mA , the main difference for the average user is no bloatware. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 01:23, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, it is interesting. Bloatware has been removable in Windows 7. In Windows 10 Home, some features appear to be unremovable. They also talk about a special file system in Win10 Workstation, what is it? AboutFace 22 (talk) 13:12, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like they're using ReFS instead of NTFS for the filesystem. I haven't tried it myself but it sounds interesting. Random character sequence (talk) 18:23, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe that's accurate. ReFS still can't be used for the boot partition. Using it for other partitions is an option, as it was with ordinary Windows 10 Pro before the Fall Creator's Update [3] [4]. (Well technically you can still use it with Windows 10 Pro but you can't create the volumes, and there's always a risk that support may be removed in the future if they're already decided to remove creation support.) Galaxy Tablet A wifi problems

[edit]

The internet is saying I have to reset all data on the phone to solve the problem, I would like to know if there is maybe any other option, or if its the only one? The wifi mode is on on the tablet but it connects today only for 1-2 seconds to my network and goes immediately out of connection. When I look up which wifi networks are available I see that my home wifi is available but sometimes it just disappear from the screen and shows up again a few seconds later. I have yet not made any hard reset of the full data (facility reset, Werkszustand) because I first have to do some backups.

  • I Have restarted several times
  • I have turn off wifi and on again, I turn on and off the flight mode
  • I have deleted the network on the tablet and connected again with the password
  • I have turn off the fritzbox and on again.
  • no other device have this problem, the printer and the computer are connected all the time

How does such a problem may happen? Does the tablet just don't like my wifi home network anymore or is there something unknown program blocking the availability of my wifi? How does it can be that a hard reset and full data delete is the only way to solve such a problem, is there really no other solution? --Saegen zeugen des sofas jehovas (talk) 20:45, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you just have the wrong password. Before a hard reset I would suggest that you try connecting to another wifi with known password, or a password free access point to see what happens. Try having it close to the wifi router to make sure it can get a signal through, even if the radio band is congested. You could also try to turn off all the other wifi devices you have, and then power off and on the Wifi router. This will clear the DHCP table of entries, and perhaps there is a limit on how much can connect. Then this will let the tablet get first chance to connect. I have seen limits on my own wifi router when many visitors have connected their devices. Be careful of "internet is saying", instead look at who on the Internet is saying this, and how credible they are. You don't know who we are either on the Computing Reference Desk! Do you know how to do a backup using a USB cable onto a computer? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 00:02, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I was all the time near the Apple MC414Z/A AirPort to get a connection but it didn't work. The passwort was not changed. Its still the same... But for no reason, my HP Printer does not connect anymore to the Apple MC414Z/A AirPort. And also the Galaxy Tablet after doing the hard reset. I was thinking that its the fault of the Tablet when its not working after setting everything up from new, but... I don't understand this anymore! That printer was yesterday working fine with wifi and today he is not interested anymore doing his service.. --Saegen zeugen des sofas jehovas (talk) 02:46, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have two devices that are not connecting to your wireless router. You are blaming the devices and not the wireless router. It is very possible that your password did change - not because YOU changed it, but because someone else changed it. So, set the password on the router. Then set the password on the devices. If it still doesn't work, then you can see what else could be the problem. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 11:20, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Have you actually tried turning the router and AP off and on again or otherwise restarting it (not resetting it to factory defaults, restarting/resetting it so it makes a clean reboot)? If devices are acting up with a router or AP that you control it's generally one of the first steps (the other one is of course doing the same for your device), as made famous in the The IT Crowd. Your initial statement seems to imply you had since you mentioned turning off a Fritz!Box but you now bring up an AirPort so I'm not sure which one you're trying to connect. If you're trying to connect to both and neither work but both used to work, restarting the Fritz!Box should probably have been enough to allow you to connect to it, as I'm guessing it's also the device connected to the internet. But restarting the AirPort still makes sense especially if you don't know if you have a complicated setup. (E.g. is it possible the Fritz!Box has DHCP Server disable and only the AirPort is providing DHCP? Any dependence of the Fritz!Box on the AirPort to provide proper service means it needs to be part of the equation too.)

Note that it is incredibly common that some devices may not be able to connect to a router or AP but other devices can without issue and restarting the router or AP will ensure everything can again. So 'other devices can connect' is never sufficient evidence that a restart of the router or AP is not needed. Even more so if it's not so much they can connect but they are connected, or they are connected via ethernet, or 2.4ghz vs 5ghz or something.

Or to put it a different way, with any competently designed simple hardware, restarting it should cause no harm so it always makes sense to try it for any involved devices even if you don't think it matters. If you have wifi extenders or multiple APs, you should eventually try restarting all of them to reduce possible confusion.

Also as said above, are you sure the wifi password is right? It used to be right doesn't mean it is right, since it could have been changed whether maliciously, accidentally or an accidental reset to device defaults. From my experience the way Android devices signal invalid passwords can sometimes be confusing since sometimes it can sort of look like it connects when it's actually a failed password. I suspect other consumer hardware can be even worse.

P.S. For clarity I'm thinking of a home or some small business scenarios. If your charge with managing the network of a major company you probably shouldn't be asking for advice on basic stuff here and you should probably already know that it's not necessarily always a good idea just to restart all your network devices.
