Don't Hold Your Breath and Just Dance: Similar Sounding?

[edit]

I was listening to the radio a few days ago and Nicole Scherzinger's "Don't Hold Your Breath" came on. I thought for a moment that it was going to be "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga. I like both songs. They sound to my ear like they have very similar tunes & rythms. Has anyone else heard them like this, or is just me?

Drum cadence in a Tarzan movie

[edit]

I recall seeing an old Tarzan film, in which the cadence played on the native drums went "boom-BAH-boom-BAH-buddy-buddy-buddy-buddy, boom BAH-boom-BAH-buddy-buddy-BUM" (repeated). This exact drum cadence was used by some US college marching bands starting in the early 1950's while getting on and off the football field, and I've wondered what year the movie came out, compared to the year bands started using the cadence. Who imitated whom, bands, or Hollywood? Edison (talk) 04:29, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The cadence in question is, I believe, best associated with the Florida State Seminoles War Chant fight song, also used by the Atlanta Braves, and sometimes known as the "Tomahawk Chop" song. See [1]. I'm not sure whether such a usage ever appeared directly in a Tarzan movie, or if it was just a "savage drums" sort of beat which appears similarly in Tarzan films. --Jayron32 04:44, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, the "Tomahawk" cadence is way simpler than the one I speak of, just going : "BOOM-boom-boom-boom" repeated. It dates back to at least "Pow Wow the Indian Boy" cartoons from 1949, as at [2]. The earliest clip I could find of the fancier band drumbeat is shown at the beginning of this video of the 1954 Rose Bowl: [3]. Edison (talk) 14:36, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here I am praying that in the vast human resources of Wikipedia, someone remembers a jungle movie wherein the "native drummers" played the stated cadence. Did someone in Hollywood note and borrow the drumbeat played by a college band on Jan 1, 1954, or did the percussion section of the college band borrow from a Hollywood movie of the 30's or 40's? I have viewed all the Tarzan trailers on Youtube from 1932 through the 1950's without hearing the drum cadence in question, but I clearly recall it being played by "native drummers" in some "jungle movie."Edison (talk) 04:41, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

mind-bending movies and novels

[edit]

Friends, please list out some of the best mind-bending, mind, brain, psychological, memory, creativity, consciousness (example: movies like Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, inception etc.,) related novels and movies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.224.149.10 (talk) 12:16, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Films by David Lynch, and Nausea (novel). I had a lot of suggestions that would fit psychological - I was going to start with Ingmar Bergman and Tove Jansson - but that probably covers ground you're not interested in, to do with characters' philosophy of life and feelings towards other people.  Card Zero  (talk) 14:50, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first things I thought of were Videodrome, A Scanner Darkly, and The Game, which led me to Psychological thriller, which lists other possibilities. Pfly (talk) 15:15, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
House, an old Japanese horror film, is pretty trippy--GroovySandwichYum. 04:57, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What are all the songs used in the album version of this song? (In order, if possible, since I wanted to download some included that I know I've heard and liked but don't know their name.) I know there's a YouTube video of a live performance of this they did that says all the songs in that version, but the album version appears different, and our section on the song only names a few of the songs. Looking for a specific Doonesbury strip

[edit]

In the one I'm looking for, a prospective student is in an interview for admittance to a medical school and the interviewer is noting the student's perfect credentials, and then the interviewer says, to paraphrase, "You don't know how many perfect transcripts I've seen. It'd be better if you had a 'C' or two for some authenticity." The student gets worried quickly and says "But wait! I didn't deserve all those 'A's!" to which the interviewer replies "I know you didn't. But hey, what can I do?" 20.137.18.50 (talk) 16:44, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This site[4] might help, if you have a clue of about when it was. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:34, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
