Does anyone know what this computer game is?

[edit]

I saw someone playing a computer game in recitation today, but I don't know what it is. It seemed like some type of a turn based strategy game set up on a map that looked like a much more detailed risk-like map. He was controlling Germany towards the end of the 18th Century. There were some tabs along the top for Production, Trade, and Diplomacy. There were some other ones too, but I can't remember them. There were some text popups with writing style that looked like the New York Times header (I'll include this image for reference, because what better way is there to describe some type of pre-World War I game where someone was controlling Germany than a newspaper announcement of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand). Does anyone know what this could be? Ryan Vesey 00:39, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Look at Paradox Interactive games. Could have been Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun or Victoria II given the time frame. They all feature Risk-like world maps, intense strategic detail, etc. Paradox games cover all of history from Ancient Rome to the 20th century. If it isn't that one, the genre you want to look at is "Grand strategy" games. The Wikipedia article on the genre, Grand strategy wargame is a bit light on details, but if you follow that thread, I'm sure you can identify it. Category:Grand strategy video games may also help. --Jayron32 00:55, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are too good at this. I can't see the graphics for Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun, but they looked newer and exactly like those of Victoria II. Thank you! Ryan Vesey 01:43, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Enough with the name calling. Just because you don't understand the way something works, does not make it "stupid". -- Jack of Oz [Talk] 06:44, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what your complaint is re the Gibb brothers. Each article Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb describe him as a 'musician, singer and songwriter'. One can wonder in the case of many celebrities whether they actually do write their own material, so perhaps you can read "X is a singer-songwriter" and understand that to mean "X is a person who is frequently billed as a singer-songwriter" rather than imagining that the Wikipedian who wrote the article has personal knowledge of the subject's abilities. Sussexonian (talk) 09:13, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Note that Barry, Maurice and Robin are listed (separately, since the list is for individuals, not groups) in List of singer-songwriters, whereas Bieber is not. None of them are mentioned in the Singer-songwriter article, however, which is overloaded with examples in any case. Deor (talk) 11:14, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hartjoy just had to get a message to us. Clarityfiend (talk) 15:08, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Right. It's too bad that message wasn't in English. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots17:04, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The concept singer-songwriter applies to individual artists like James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon who almost exclusively write and perform their own (usually folk to adult contemporary) ballads. It doesn't usually apply to groups like the Beatles who wrote almost all their own work, or to artists in other musical genres like Marvin Gaye in soul/R&B. The Bee Gees are a group that covered songs by other artists in multiple genres, so they are definitely not "singer-songwriters" even though the are singers and songwriters. μηδείς (talk) 18:01, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To elaborate on what Medeis states, singer-songwriter does not merely refer to any person who sings songs they write themselves; rather it refers to a distinct style or genre of western pop music which developed out of an intersection between the acoustic folk music and the soft rock movements. Neither Justin Beiber nor any of the four singing Gibb Brothers (why does everyone forget Andy Gibb?) come from that musical tradition, even if they participated in writing songs and singing them. Confusing if you assume words mean what they look like they mean, rather than what they actually mean, see etymological fallacy. In this case, the assumption that the term "singer-songwriter" is more inclusive than it actually is is an etymological fallacy. --Jayron32 22:40, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That article is a huge mess. I removed Ricky Nelson (!) and was reverted because he was credited for writing some songs. μηδείς (talk) 00:50, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, good luck with that. There's a limit to human intelligence, but ignorance knows no bounds. --Jayron32 01:20, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
