Grand piano sizes

[edit]

I don’t understand grand piano sizes. What difference does it make if a piano is a baby or a concert grand? 73.168.193.98 (talk) 02:46, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Read Piano#Grand. Though the article doesn't explicitly say so, the sizes must be for how long it is from the keyboard to the other end, since the width and height can't vary much, if at all. It also explains that size does matter, for sound quality. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:46, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Grand pianos are longer than baby grands. The strings inside the piano are longer. The primary result is that a grand can produce louder sounds because longer strings move more air. It also means that the sounds are purer. All of those vibrarions inside the piano interact with one another. Longer strings have more vibrations happening that you want, which overshadows the interference that you don't want. Most people can't hear it, but if you are a professional pianist, you likely hear the difference. If you really want to hear the difference, compare one of the short upright pianos to a concert piano. The upright has a toy-like quality to the sound. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 18:56, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This video gives a good explanation of some of the compromises involved in the manufacture of baby grands. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 20:22, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

unrecognized figure skaters

[edit]

I remember seeing two different African-American men figure skaters. One performed to some patriotic music. The other performed to "The Saint" by Orbital. I can't seem to find those skaters anywhere on YouTube. Who are they? Anyone know?2604:2000:1281:4B3:EDB8:6976:26C0:31E (talk) 11:34, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This article [1] includes a few names, although the men mentioned are all from a number of decades ago. I'm sure there have been many more who did not reach a high enough level of performance to achieve national fame, but that wouldn't prevent them from being featured in YouTube videos. --Xuxl (talk) 12:48, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
