Is there a theoretical motivation for link grammar? Every description I've been able to find seems to imply it's a purely ad hoc algorithm, but it would seem reasonable for a theory to reflect linkages across words within sentence constituents and also reflect boundaries between constituents, and link grammar and syntactic merge both seem to do this.
