Page count in Google Books E-Books

[edit]

Does anyone knows what is the correlation between page numbering in books downloaded from Google Play and their paper counterparts? I'm translating the article about Barbara Jane Harrison for Russian Wikipedia. To clarify some issues in the original article I bought the book Ottaway, Susan (2008). "Appendix 2". Fire over Heathrow, The Tragedy of Flight 712. Barnsley: Pen and Sword Books. p. 166. ISBN 978-1-84415-739-6. {{cite book}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |month= (help) from Google Play and downloaded it on my smartphone. The book looks just like a scanned copy of the paper book (if viewd in so called "original format"). But to my astonishment I found that information in the original article that is referenced to the book is contained not on the pages specified in the references but on quite different pages. And now I'm bewildered about how I should reference information in the Russian article (since I have made minor or, perhaps, not so minor corrections and clarifications). To be clear, there no page numbers "printed" on the images of pages themselves. But there is a page counter in the viewer and it honestly counts pages from the first one as you browse them. The pagination of different paper editions of a particular title can vary markedly, since there are a number of different book formats, and even in the same format both the size of the type font used (hence the average number of words per line) and the leading (spacing) between them (hence the number of lines per page) can vary from edition to edition. Any E-book will also be subject to such variations, whether it's a direct page-by-page copy of a particular paper edition, or a complete resetting for the e-edition. Long story short, in general there might be a one-to-one correspondance between a particular pair of paper edition and e-book edition, or there might be none. However, I have no specific knowledge of Google play editions. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.221.83.136 (talk) 17:37, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Эйхер: - I've done some work on the en-Wiki article on BJH, and have a copy of the book in question. I can assist with queries about page numbers. Please use my talk page for any questions. Mjroots (talk) 13:25, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Google does not change the format so they keep the pagenumbers like they scan the book. Its best to stick to that if you use exactly the references google uses on their "About this book"-page or simply use a reference containing the google books link like

<ref name="Ottaway2008">Susan Ottaway. ''[https://books.google.com/books?id=E66gCgAAQBAJ Fire over Heathrow: The tragedy of flight 712]''. Pen and Sword; 22 September 2008. [[International Standard Book Number|ISBN]] [[Special:BookSources/978-1-84468-566-0 |978-1-84468-566-0]]. p. 166.</ref>[1]

I use Wikipedia citation tool for Google Books to generate these. --Kharon (talk) 06:37, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chrome extension for mining block

[edit]

Italian news broadcaster Striscia la notizia, advice to install extension in Google Chrome for miner block, but I found two extensions: No Coin - Block miners on the web! and minerBlock. Which is the best? --151.49.99.187 (talk) 21:02, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend a more general approach like ScriptSafe or alike clones of the famous NoScript for Mozilla-based browsers. Any tinkering with blocking addones like that may lead to websites not working anymore tho, since the siteowner will try to enforce their Schemes to make some pennies from your visite, be it commercials, mining scripts or worse, and thus try to detect and circumvent your attempts to block their scripts. --Kharon (talk) 07:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
