Weight of dimes[edit]

I was reading the article here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/23/philadelphia-millions-dimes-stolen-truck-theft

From the article: There was $750,000 worth of dimes in the truck before the robbery – a shipment that weighed about six tons and cost a pretty penny.

$750000 in dimes = 7500000 dimes.

A dime weighs 2.268 grams. Source: https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-medal-programs/circulating-coins/dime

7500000 dimes * 2.268 grams per dime = 17010000 grams total. Chop off three zeros to convert to kilos. That's 17010 kilograms. Multiply by 2.2 to convert (roughly) to pounds. That's about 37400 pounds, or about 18 tons.

So, where did they get "six tons" from? 2601:18A:C500:E830:526A:B17D:E5EF:4ACD (talk) 00:53, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article says the actual theft was $234,500. That's around a third of the total, hence it would be about 6 tons. Maybe the writer got a little confused. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:50, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously? How much work must it have taken to move that much into their getaway car and later to some hideaway? Steal six tons, what do you get? A hernia. And obviously these geniuses didn't think ahead and figure out how to convert that into something more convenient without arousing suspicion. They should really have spent their time more productively, like running for Speaker of the House. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:49, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reportedly, they have now been caught.  --Lambiam 16:58, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yearly Hedgehog Population Count for New Zealand[edit]

I have a request for yearly hedgehog population counts in New Zeland. From 1985 to present is requested. I do not know how to find things like that. What is the best way to find it? 97.82.165.112 (talk) 13:09, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The (relatively small) human population of New Zealand is concentrated in urban areas so it is very difficult to people to estimate the hedgehog population by counting them. If an internet search has not thrown up anything I suggest you follow the links in the references that accompany our article on Hedgehogs in New Zealand. Articles that turn up only give a vague estimate of the population. Here's an interesting article from the Department of Conservation [1], but it does not include any numbers. You may wish to get in touch with them to see if they have some figures they could share. Xuxl (talk) 14:04, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will do that. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 14:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
