All three above done, far more painfully than necessary, because I made lots of silly mistakes ... I need sleep! Graham87 15:52, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Thank you and sleep well! ;-) --Brackenheim (talk) 17:36, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

DoneDerHexer (Talk) 22:34, 4 March 2012 (UTC) P. S.: Please drop a note on my user talk page if that happens again. As a steward I can use importupload for more complex importations. I'm also the founder of de:Wikipedia:Importwünsche/Importupload, wrote an export tool, and did more than 1,500 imports on dewiki with up to 4,000 revisions and 450 MB export data.
Thanks! :)--GoPTCN 23:09, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Multiple pages already brought across from the German Wikipedia

Hello, I've had this request to ?retrospectively merge the histories? (?Nachimport?) from the German Wikipedia of the following pages, which are Chinese heritage listings (there'll be more to follow at some point, should I proceed similarly/differently?), based on the official Chinese lists, rendered into German by User:Reiner Stoppok, which I've then tried to carry across from there to the English Wikipedia, with just the edit summary "(from de:wp)". I've basically done a de-luxe copy and paste, with an attempt to translate the site names, fix all the links, a slight reformat etc. Here's the list of relevant pages. Am I asking at the right place? Thanks a lot, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 14:23, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you're asking at the right place ;-) But in my opinion a "Nachimport" is not really necessary, because the articles consist of simple lists and no translated text. But I'm not sure, how you have to handle this at the English Wikipedia... Regards, --Brackenheim (talk) 14:38, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Guess the basic thought is that it would be nice to credit explicitly the original user for all their work, as per the request I received; if the upshot is no Nachimport, I guess I could put a mini-explanation on the talk page of each article, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 14:46, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
@Brackenheim: "no translated text", are you sure? --77.183.123.104 (talk) 14:56, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
There's a bit of translated text but not that much. I agree with Brackenheim that a nachimport isn't really that necessary because it's just a straight list, but I'm probably a bit biased as I'd be the one who'd have to do all the importation. :-) Graham87 15:14, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
It's not "just a straight list", it's a cumbersome translated text from the official Chinese Heritage lists. --77.183.123.104 (talk) 15:27, 3 May 2012 (UTC) PS: The German de:Liste traditioneller chinesischer Musikinstrumente for example is also based on an import from en:wp (List of Chinese musical instruments, mostly from User:Badagnani). - I wonder a little about the discussion here.
I'll ask DerHexer to take a look, as he can import pages directly (which would be far faster than if I did the work). Graham87 15:45, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
谢谢 --77.183.123.104 (talk) 15:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
While it is nice to credit the original user, the import system has the feature that you often credit a different user instead. Take, for example, Special:PermanentLink/182206296, made by me and credited to me. This was imported as de:Special:PermanentLink/84331684, but is no longer credited to me. Instead, it is credited to a completely different user who happens to share the same user name. It would not surprise me at all if there is some similar conflict for some user name in at least of those listed articles. I'd say that it is only a good idea to import pages if you can confirm that all German users have activated SUL and that there is no SUL conflict for any of the accounts on English Wikipedia. For other uses, {{translated page}} may be better. Of course, I may be biased since my edits are miscredited each time they are imported to German Wikipedia. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:02, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
This is a completely other case than "from de:wp". --77.183.123.104 (talk) 17:37, 3 May 2012 (UTC) PS: You should regulate that with the user you have mentioned.
This is precisely the same thing: you are proposing the replacement of one bad thing with a different bad thing. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
These listings were on the Chinese Wikipedia before the German, as per the diffs here and here, for the two most recent pages; do the prior histories need to be copied across from the Chinese Wikipedia too, which I looked at a little bit for extra pictures etc? Also, at some point I plan to continue for another fifteen or so pages; I understand from the discussion that this might create a fair bit of work for other people, copying across histories etc; would it be best if I try not to look at the Chinese and German Wikipedias and work straight from the lists themselves? Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 22:04, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
But they were there (and at many other places in China) without a Western translation. It was much easier for you to prepare the English lists with the help of the German versions. You have used them and you mentioned that ("from de:wp"), therefore the respect for the work of others should be better expressed by the import. I spent a lot of time with these lists. --77.183.123.104 (talk) 23:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Your lists are certainly great (and I see you have even started the second-tier provincial listings, which is fantastic) and must have indeed taken a long time - it's just we don't want to take up that of others: would you be happy with me putting a note on each talk page for the existing pages and, for the future ones, also putting a fuller edit description with a link to the German page and your user page? Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 23:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
P.S. I would be more than happy also to make another edit to each of the existing lists, giving this fuller credit, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 00:01, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
P.P.S. If these proposals are ok with you, we could take this discussion to my or your user page, so we can agree the wording before I make the changes, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 00:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
What is meant with "it's just we don't want to take up that of others"? --77.183.123.104 (talk) 00:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

"Attribution in the edit summary and placing the template Translated page on the article talk page" would also be okay. I just have told that to Maculosae tegmine lyncis. --77.10.163.39 (talk) 19:42, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis! The solution now is okay, I think. --77.10.235.255 (talk) 20:31, 8 May 2012 (UTC) PS: I have told that also to DerHexer. 77.183.30.134 (talk) 19:18, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Note by importing administrator: Not done; I don't want to do it until you've finished the translation. Perhaps work on it in your userspace first? I can import it to a subpage of your user page and you can work on the translation there. Graham87 13:59, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

I guess the situation in Prototrichia metallica and Trichia decipiens is similar?--GoPTCN 11:53, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Plasmodiokarp--GoPTCN 12:16, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Nope, because you created the English versions. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible since it's way past my bedtime. Graham87 15:58, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
I should everytime create it on my sandbox? Could you then try User:GreatOrangePumpkin/Sandbox29 from [3]? Thanks.--GoPTCN 18:57, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't matter whether you create it in your sandbox. The only reason I can't do the import is if there is already an article in the English Wikipedia about the topic, so instead of creating a new article, you add your translation to an existing one. I've imported all the pages that you mentioned in your previous three messages. Graham87 03:44, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Language: nost:MuHammad
  • New name: Muhammad
  • Note: Can't right now remember how the import process works; if it doesn't do it automatically, please create the old title as a redirect to the new title. FYI, I'm finding these pages by checking redlinks at User:Emijrp/FirstPages against histories at nost: --Nyttend (talk) 22:08, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Note by importing administrator: I've restored the MuHammad page and imported one edit to it from the Nostalgia Wikipedia, but I haven't history merged it with the main Muhammad article because the gap in the page history would be far too great. Graham87 03:20, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Shouldn't nost:RussiA also be imported? I wish that people could learn to spell properly... --Stefan2 (talk) 01:40, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Precisely why free linking was enabled! Nyttend (talk) 03:23, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I understand that this may seem like an unusual request, however, since they have a compatible license, I'm sure that they would allow you to contact them to request the ability to transwiki one contribution which needs to be attributed. Perhaps you could request the .xml file of the page history there? --69.155.129.170 (talk) 23:59, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Despite the fact that only stewards can directly import XML history to the English Wikipedia, I'd lean towards not doing the request because the original wiki is not run by the Wikimedia Foundation, and therefore its accounts cannot be merged with this site. A talk page notice would be enough in this case. By the way, you can make an XML file of the page history of any page on a MediaWiki wiki by using Special:Export. Graham87 01:08, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
Let's see what others say. Thanks for the useful tip. It did work on that wiki. Thanks. 69.155.129.170 (talk) 02:26, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Note by importing administrator: Not done; if you want to translate the article, I can import the German version to somewhere in your userspace. I can't just import it into the main namespace to make it a live article, because it's not in English. Graham87 01:10, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Note: Dear Admin, could you please import the following text? It's a translation of the German entry '13 Semester' which hasn't been translated yet or at least published on Wikipedia. As part of a university translation class project, German students have translated several texts, which we will send you as soon as we know if we have followed the correct procedure here. Please let us know if anything needs to be done differently. Thanks, TransMania --132.230.124.139 (talk) 13:51, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
