Supreme Court Building, Singapore

Welcome to the SMU Constitutional and Administrative Law Wikipedia Project, managed by Dr. Jack Tsen-Ta Lee, an assistant professor of law of the School of Law, Singapore Management University. As a participant of the project, you are required to collaborate with the members of the group to which you have been assigned to prepare a Wikipedia article or part of one. The aims of the project are to encourage you to internalize the material covered in the course, as well as to contribute towards producing a body of accurate information about Singapore constitutional and administrative law that is freely available on the Internet.

Detailed instructions and information on how your work will be graded are on eLearn. Note, in particular, the following:

 • Create an account. Please create an account for yourself so that everyone editing articles can be identified. Please choose a user name that does not suggest a group – do not choose a name like "User:2011Group1". To create an account, click here. Once you have done that, add your name to the "Participants" section below. Remember to log in before editing!
 • Working in sandboxes. Your group will develop the article in a "sandbox", which is a temporary page for working on articles. Sandboxes that are subpages of this page have been created for this purpose. To access your group's sandbox, click on the appropriate article name in the blue box below. Your article will not be visible to Wikipedia readers while it is under construction. Articles that ultimately achieve at least a B-category grade will be transferred into the main article space.
 • Discussions. You can use the talk page of this page to talk to your group members about the project or to discuss things relating to the project with me.

If you are in Groups 1 to 4 your article should be completed by 4:00 pm on Friday, 21 February 2014 in Week 7 of the course, and if you are in Groups 5 to 8 your deadline is 4:00 pm on Friday, 28 March 2014 in Week 12.

Your group must work on its assigned article independently without consulting any other group.

Some of you will find that your group has been asked to improve an existing article (such as "Judicial deference"). You are permitted to incorporate material from the existing article into your article, but note that these existing articles have been chosen because they are incomplete and usually unreferenced. The information in them may be inaccurate.

How to edit articles[edit]

If you have not edited Wikipedia articles before, please read "Wikipedia:Tutorial". Don't worry too much if you are unsure about formatting articles. You will be graded on the content of the article.

Some important things to note:

 • Verifiability. Content in Wikipedia articles must be verifiable. Make sure that you add references to back up statements. This can easily be done using the citation template, like this:
What to type: The branch of law dealing with this facet of the Court's jurisdiction is administrative law.
Result: The branch of law dealing with this facet of the Court's jurisdiction is administrative law.[1]
1. ^ Yeo Tiong Min (1999), "Jurisdiction of the Singapore Courts", in Kevin Y L Tan (ed.), The Singapore Legal System (2nd ed.), Singapore: Singapore University Press, pp. 249–296 at 265–266, ISBN 9789971692131. [This appears in the "Notes" section towards the end of the article.]
Notice that
 • Case not available on CommonLII. (If there is an existing Wikipedia article about the case, you can link to it by placing square brackets around the case name, like this: "Chng Suan Tze v. Minister for Home Affairs".)
Subsequently:
The "–" symbol separating the page and paragraph ranges is actually an en dash, not a hyphen. To insert an en dash, click on "Special characters" in the toolbar above the edit window, then "Symbols", then scroll through the table of symbols until you find the en dash character (on the right of "m³") and click on it. An en dash also appears in the box underneath the "Save page" button.
Cases from other jurisdictions
UK (including Privy Council) cases.
 • Case available on BAILII. Look up the case on the British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) website, and if it is available you can use cite BAILII to create a citation. Example: .
The |link= parameter is for creating a link to an existing Wikipedia article about the case. Omit this parameter if no such article exists.
 • Case not available on BAILII.
US cases. .
Legislation
First time. Use the Singapore legislation template, like this:
 • Statutes.
 • The Constitution.
If you are not going to refer to the same statute later on, you can omit the "("SCJA")".
Subsequently:
 • Statutes.
 • The Constitution.
Parliamentary debates
First time. Use the Singapore Hansard template, like this:
For the |office= parameter, if the MP speaking is:
 • an officeholder – type the name of the office. Example: office=Minister for Home Affairs.
 • a backbencher – type the MP's constituency name. Example: office=Aljunied GRC.
 • a Non-constituency Member of Parliament – type the following: office=Non-constituency Member of Parliament.
Subsequently:
Journal articles
First time. Use the citation template, like this:
Subsequently:
Books
First time:
 • With chapter.
 • No chapter (book title only).
If there is no existing Wikipedia article about an author or editor, you can omit the |authorlink= or |editor-link= parameter.
Subsequently:
 • With chapter:
 • No chapter:
Newspapers and magazines
First time:
 •
 •
For magazines, replace "newspaper" with "magazine".
Subsequently:

Note that Wikipedia citation is not the same as the citation you will use for other forms of legal writing such as your individual research paper. For such writing, please cite according to the Singapore Academy of Law Style Guide Quick Reference.
