Old announcements[edit]

  • We have a new stub: {{Scotland-railstation-stub}}, which populates the large new category: Category:Scotland railway station stubs. --Mais oui! 10:37, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The latest Scotland-related Featured article - Scotland in the High Middle Ages - is today's headline article on the Main page.--Mais oui! 07:59, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Have a say at Wikipedia talk:Jordanhill commemoration. --Mais oui! 10:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • A very warm welcome to two more notice boards: the English Wikipedians' notice board and the Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board.--Mais oui! 12:16, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • As some of you may know (Derek), the Scots Wikipedia is now listed on the front page, with a total of 1,466 articles at the time of my writint this. The Scots Wikipedia is growing quickly, and could use your help! If you're worried about your Scots reading/writing level, a quick look at ScotsGate's Grammar and a reading a few articles will point you in the right direction, and small changes may be made a plenty afore ye write much. Your participation would be much appreciated! Canaen 01:01, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Totally agree. Even if you don't feel that confident about your grasp of Scots, just wade in. You are very likely better than you think! In any case we've got plenty of folk who are prepared to fix spelling and grammar at the moment but we could do with a few more folk that like writing new articles. -- Derek Ross | Talk 19:56, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Congratulations to SWNB participant User:Nach0king, who has created Wikipedia's one millionth article. He, and the article, Jordanhill railway station, have been getting a shedload (inadvertant railway pun?) of attention, which hopefully will spin off into much more reader traffic to some of the Scotland-related articles, especially Glasgow- and transport-related ones. I hate to bounce our latest Featured article, Scotland in the High Middle Ages, off the Portal:Scotland so soon, but in honour of Nach0king's pretty amazing coup, let's put Jordanhill railway station up on the portal as our highlighted article for a spell. I think that it even deserves good article status already, because so many people have been working to improve it. May I urge all SWNB participants to visit and read the article and click-through all the links to articles which you have contributed to and give them all a bit of spit and polish: this really is a wonderful opportunity for us to present quality Scotland-related articles to a wider audience than usual.--Mais oui! 10:57, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • A very warm welcome to our first new WikiProject in a while: Wikipedia:WikiProject Medieval Scotland. Please visit it and at least click Watch, even if you don't want to sign yourself up.--Mais oui! 15:01, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The new UK collaboration of the fortnight is a tasty one: Censorship in the United Kingdom. I look forward to seeing how the article has shaped up come March.--Mais oui! 23:55, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • A Willy on Wheels account has just been created by someone on the Scots Wikipedia for the usual nonsense. I've cleaned up its initial changes and blocked the account for the next six months but I'd appreciate it if anyone would be willing to help the two sco:admins to keep an eye on the situation. -- Derek Ross | Talk 09:33, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • And hot on the heels of the portal, we have: Wikipedia:Welsh Wikipedians' notice board.--Mais oui! 03:58, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • And now a very warm welcome to Portal:Wales.--Mais oui! 16:49, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • A very warm welcome to the new Portal:England, which is developing rapidly. Which prompts me to mention that, although reasonable at the moment, Portal:Scotland could do with some review, progress and development, to make it truly excellent. The number one priority is really to benchmark it against other, better portals, and "nick" their good ideas (to be undiplomatic about it)! My name is down as the initiator and main point of contact, but I have been getting involved in (diverted by) other projects and would really appreciate it if some other SWNB participants could give it a look and suggest improvements. Best place for discussion is probably Portal Talk:Scotland, rather than here.--Mais oui! 12:52, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • The current UK Collaboration of the Fortnight is Education in the United Kingdom.--Mais oui! 20:11, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • A new stub has been created, along with English and Welsh partner stubs (I suspect "out of process"): Category:Scottish football biography stubs. To use it you add {{Scotland-footybio-stub}}. The guys over at stub sorting may have a word or two to say to the "miscreant" that initiated it, but if it is going to hold at least 60 biographies I don't suppose they will mind too much. There are only 5 in it at present.--Mais oui! 14:40, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • A big step forward today for the Scotland-related content on Wikipedia. User:Supergolden has initiated the much-requested Geography of Scotland article (with a handy To Do box in the Talk section), and a very fine start she/he has made! Thank you. What we really need now is someone geologically-minded: Geology of Scotland!--Mais oui! 15:29, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note that Glasgow-geo-stub and WesternIsles-geo-stub are proposed. Specifically, that Scotland-geo-stub would be split up according to Lieutenancy areas, which would be consistent with how the England-geo-stubs were split up. As and when they're found to hit some reasonable size threshold, that is. The other obvious alternative would be by "unitaries". Alai 16:26, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is Ronnie Corbett a Scot or a Brit? Well, the answer (of course?) is: both. But how should he be described in:
1. the article itself?
2. the categorisation?
Have your tuppence-worth at Talk:Ronnie Corbett.--Mais oui! 20:07, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Several bits of news today. Firstly, check out the new Portal:London, which seems to have been stimulated by the arrival of "our" brand new Portal:Scotland. Theirs is undoubtedly better than ours at the moment, but as I am computer-code inept, perhaps that is no surprise. If anyone more competent would like to fiddle with the layout, content and images at the Scotland portal, feel free. Also feel free to browse other portals (eg London!), picking up tips and hints. (I note that Wikipedia:WikiProject London was the driving force behind their success. Perhaps it is time for a Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland, Wikipedia:WikiProject Edinburgh and Wikipedia:WikiProject Glasgow to drive forward the main Scotland-related Wikiportal(s) and principal pages?)
Secondly, we have our first successes to report, some a little belatedly. The following pages have been initiated or ammended after first being displayed on this page (we do not necessarily claim "cause and effect" although there is certainly an element of that):
- belated thanks to User:MacRusgail, for creating the much-needed Category:Scotland stubs (or Category:Scotland-related stubs?, see the relevant WP:CFD and WP:SFD discussions) on 22 Oct. He did this "out-of-process" (slapped wrist was humbly accepted I understand), but it is a much needed supercat for our three (thus far) Scotland-related stub cats: geo, bio, and Hebrides-geo. MacRusgail did this only about 12 hours after this notice board went live, so unclear if any association. Nice if there was though.
- next came the new Portal:Scotland itself on 24 Oct, which started its life as a red link for the first couple of days of this notice board, but is now cantering along like a fresh foal
- then yesterday we had a veritable flood of progress: Rheic Ocean (new), Daniela Nardini (new), Scottish Episcopal Church (much improved) (plus associated Template:ReligionScotland), and a nice Turner painting for Falls of Clyde (waterfalls)
Several sub-pages have been set up or are planned (see links under header "News")
Everything is starting to pick up quite fast now, so it may be hard to keep track of everything. Can I just request that if you create something new, or improve it/provide image etc, can you just leave it up for a few days, but strike it out, with a comment like (done), so that other Users can see how (if) things are progressing. Then we can move it to the relevant sub-page.
I cannot keep track of all the new Scotland-related articles, but we will just have to do our best logging the ones that we do spot. There seems to be an awful lot created each day, but no easy way of searching for them.--Mais oui! 11:21, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Scotland Portal is now up and running. It is a project in the early stages of development, but I think it could be a very useful resource indeed, perhaps more for general readers (the vast majority I presume), rather than committed editors, who may be more attracted by the great possibilities of this Scottish Wikipedians' notice board format.
Give it a Watch, and lend a hand if you can. It is (hopefully) fairly low-maintenance, but if we run with the "News" section, that will take dedication: time which I cannot commit to presently myself. Most other boxes need replacment/update only weekly, fortnightly, or monthly, plus the occasional refreshment of the Scotland-related categories. Anyway, I assume this is how the other Portals are run, so we can follow their lead.
Please add the following code - {{portalpar|Scotland}} - to your own User page, and you will have the link to the portal right there for easy access. I will investigate how other portals use shortcuts too.
Assistance from Wikipedians in the rest of the UK, and indeed everywhere, would be greatly appreciated!--Mais oui! 10:17, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • The New Articles page is now up and running, and we have our first couple of new pages. You can view it here: Scottish Wikipedians' notice board/New articles. Don't forget to click the Watch tab, and add any Scotland-related articles you initiate to the list. If they have previously been Requested Articles at this notice board, please show them in bold type.--Mais oui! 18:58, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
