Wikimedia Philippines[edit]

Wikimedia has local chapters all over the world. Wikimedia Philippines is currently in the process of being chartered. Similar to its mother foundation, the goals of Wikimedia Philippines are to promote free education content, but with focus on producing content in Philippine languages. To that end, Wikimedia Philippines aims to promote participation the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, which includes Wikipedias in local languages.

Philippine Language Wikipedias[edit]

The goal of Wikipedia is to provide a free-content encyclopedia to the world. This vision necessarily includes making knowledge available in all languages. The Philippine Wikipedia community is helping to achieve this goal by contributing to several Philippine-language Wikipedias. This includes Wikipedias in the following languages:

Bikol Central – https://bcl.wikipedia.org
Cebuano – https://ceb.wikipedia.org
Ilokano – https://ilo.wikipedia.org
Kapampangan – https://pam.wikipedia.org
Pangasinan – https://pag.wikipedia.org
Tagalog – https://tl.wikipedia.org
Waray – https://war.wikipedia.org
Chavacano – https://cbk-zam.wikipedia.org

The Wikipedia Philippine Collaboration Project[edit]

Wikipedia editors who have an interest in Philippine-related topics collaborate in the creation, development, maintenance and promotion of Philippine-related articles. This collaboration happens in the Philippine-language Wikipedias, the English Wikipedia, and Wikipedias in other languages.

The work of Wikipedians in the Philippine Collaboration Project includes maintaining the accuracy of Philippine-related articles. Needless to say, the more volunteers there are who verify facts and references of articles, the better the encyclopedia gets. The community invites everyone interested in Philippine topics to be part of the collaboration project.

In the English Wikipedia, the summit of a Wikipedia article’s development is its gaining of “Featured Article” status. Achieving this status requires it to be both accurate and excellently written. There have been several Philippine-related articles that have gained the “Featured Article” status in the English Wikipedia:

History of the Philippines - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Philippines
Manila Light Rail Transit System - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_Light_Rail_Transit_System
Mount Pinatubo - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Pinatubo

Each of these articles is made up of contributions from many people—from writers, to proofreaders, to photographers, to fact-checkers, to graphic artists. If you have some inclination in this kind of work and an interest to create many more featured articles about the Philippines, we invite you to join the Philippine Collaboration Project in Wikipedia.

And, of course, the Philippine-language Wikipedias can only flourish if there are many contributors in those languages.

How to Help Out[edit]

There are many ways to help in the Philippine Collaboration Project or Tambayan, as many Wikipedians informally call it. If you have interest in a Philippine topic—like history, geography, business and even showbiz—you can contribute by improving Philippine-related articles. If you can’t stand a misplaced comma or an awkward sentence, or you have a talent in graphics design or photography, your contribution would be indispensable in the creation of future Featured Philippine Articles.

To start collaborating, simply visit the Tambayan homepage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tambayan_Philippines) or start discussing in the forum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines). You can likewise reach these pages by typing "WP:PINOY" and "WT:PINOY" in the Wikipedia search box. Or you can send an email to the community through philwiki (at) yahoogroups (dot) com.

There are many other options for you aside from the development of articles. You could help out in the chartering of Wikimedia Philippines, defend articles from vandalism, tag and rate Philippine-related articles, organize events and so much more!
